Of course, we can’t explore every inch of it, but luckily, the knowledgeable Van den Berg family, creators of the amazing Kruger Self-Drive guidebook, have shared their favorite drives in Kruger with us.

Even though Kruger National Park boasts a diverse range of wildlife, it’s important to note that these creatures are not evenly spread throughout the park. Some roads may promise abundant sightings but end up falling short. The Road Less Traveled

Ah, the road that leads to the park from the far south-east. A part of the ‘Southern Circle’ it is, it cuts through the lush grazing land surrounding Crocodile Bridge Camp. The grass here is sweet and delicious, thanks to the basalt soils below. And let me tell you, where there are lots of grazers, you’re bound to find predators lurking around. Lions and leopards make their presence known to many park visitors just as soon as they enter.

If you’re looking for a bit of animal action, Gezantfombi waterhole is usually a good bet. And you won’t be disappointed on this road when it comes to cheetah sightings. There’s a reason why wild dogs choose this area to make their dens. Trust me, you’ll see plenty of them here, and it’s quite a sight to behold. As you get closer to Lower Sabie Camp, the road follows the Sabie River. And you can bet your bottom dollar that you’ll spot some leopards and other game along the way.

This road has a rich history. It was one of the very first tracks made by ranger CR de Laporte to get into the park. Even before the park existed, traders like João Albasini (from Portugal) and Sardelli (from Greece) had their trading posts in this area. There’s a lot of history here. One of the earliest fights happened here too, called the Battle of Gomondwane. It was between traders and Shangaan warriors. They clashed in this very place.

Let’s Begin the Journey: From Malelane Gate to H1-1

Imagine starting your adventure with a drive that leads you through a picturesque mountainous region filled with lush greenery. The landscape gradually transforms into a mesmerizing kudu habitat, characterized by gentle rolling hills and sporadic impala herds. As you embark on this exciting trip, keep your eyes peeled for hyenas lurking beneath the culverts and the rare appearance of wild dogs.

Imagine a place where the Mlambane River flows peacefully, creating a hotspot for incredible wildlife sightings. This is where you’ll find me, capturing glimpses of majestic elephants, lions, leopards, and other fascinating creatures. The turn-off to Renosterpan shouldn’t be missed either – it leads to a semi-permanent pan, where you can relax and observe wildlife and birds while taking shelter under the shade of a magnificent leadwood tree.

If you’re looking for a place to grab a bite, stock up on supplies, or freshen up, Afsaal Picnic Site is the perfect spot. Here, you’ll find a convenient shop, light meals to satisfy your hunger, braai facilities to enjoy a barbecue, and clean ablution facilities. The thornveld surrounding Afsaal is known for its abundant game and lush sweet grasses.

Continuing on the road, you’ll come across the turnoff to Jock Safari Lodge, where the Mitomeni and Biyamiti rivers merge and flow into the Biyamiti Basin. This is another hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts like me. Keep your eyes peeled for agile klipspringer on the rocky hills, as well as majestic elephants, lions, zebras, kudus, and impalas roaming freely in the area.

About nine kilometers ahead, you’ll find Kwaggaspan waterhole, a hidden gem worth exploring. Take your binoculars and carefully scan the surroundings – you never know what awe-inspiring sights await you.

When you think of SANParks, what comes to mind? For me, it’s the majestic image of a kudu bull, standing tall and proud amidst the African wilderness. This iconic symbol represents the essence of SANParks – a commitment to preserving and protecting our natural heritage.
