Kruger accommodation review – Lower Sabie Rest Camp

Hi there! I’m currently exploring the incredible Kruger National Park and documenting my experiences for Getaway magazine. My mission is to visit all the campsites, lodges, and accommodation options available in the park. It’s quite a task, but at the end, I’ll have a comprehensive list of them all. You can find them here: Kruger accommodation reviews. I’ll also provide you with insights into what to expect in terms of accommodation, food, amenities, animals, mobile reception, and the park’s highlights. Today, I’ll be sharing everything I discovered about the beloved Lower Sabie Rest Camp.

Exploring Lower Sabie Rest Camp

I couldn’t help but wonder why it’s so hard to book a stay at the amazing Lower Sabie Rest Camp. It turns out, there are a few reasons for that. You see, Lower Sabie has everything you could ask for. You’ll find the flat plains that are typical of the central region, but in some places, these plains stretch out over hills and ridges, offering the most breathtaking views I’ve seen in the park so far. And that’s not all. The area is also blessed with plenty of water, mainly in the form of the impressive Lower Sabie River. In fact, the camp is built right on its banks. So, you don’t even have to leave the camp to start spotting wildlife. You can just take a leisurely stroll along the river on the boardwalks or sip on a cup of coffee while enjoying the expansive wooden deck of the restaurant.

The Lower Sabie River is one of the main reasons why the rest camp is so popular. When I stop at the river crossing, I can spot hippos and crocs basking on the river banks.

Let’s talk about the accommodation at Lower Sabie Rest Camp

The accommodation at Lower Sabie Rest Camp has a unique vibe compared to other Kruger camps. You won’t find the usual round bungalows here. Instead, you have the option to stay in a place that has a kitchen and dining table inside the unit. But don’t worry, you can still enjoy the units with large porches that double as a cooking area. Another popular choice at Lower Sabie is their safari tents. These tents are built on wooden platforms and come with their own kitchens.

River-facing bungalows are positioned to give you the utmost privacy, with enough space between each one.

While the traditional camping area at Lower Sabie doesn’t offer the same level of seclusion, it has its charms. The sites are clustered together, creating a cozy village-like atmosphere. Embrace the opportunity to bond with your neighbors and share the experience.

When I visited Sunset Dam at sunset, I was amazed by its tranquility and beauty throughout the day. It’s a perfect spot to escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Let’s talk about the food

At the restaurant in Lower Sabie, you can expect to find the usual Kruger menu. They also have a convenient takeaway area where you can grab some muffins or pre-made sandwiches. But what sets this restaurant apart is its location. It’s situated on a massive wooden deck right on the banks of the Lower Sabie River. While you enjoy your meal, you’ll have the chance to spot hippos and crocs lazily lounging nearby. And if you’re staying at one of the camps, you’ll have your own braai area. Don’t worry if you don’t have a kitchen – there are communal two-plate stoves and boiling water available for your use.

Even if you decide to stay at the camp for the day, you’ll still have a good chance of seeing some animals along the Lower Sabie River. The restaurant has a big wooden deck that offers a great view.

What to Look Out For

If you go to Sunset Dam, which is just 500m from the Lower Sabie gate, you’re likely to see a variety of wildlife. It’s known for its hippos and crocodiles, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot buffalo or lions drinking in the early morning or late afternoon.

If you’re up for a bigger adventure, you can visit Tshokwane Picnic Spot, which is about 36km away. It’s a popular place and there’s a takeaway restaurant there. On the other hand, Mlondozi Picnic Spot is smaller and closer, only 18km away. You can rent a gas braai and enjoy a stunning view of the dam.

If you want to see wildlife, you should definitely take the S28 road to get to Crocodile Bridge Rest Camp. It’s known as the best road for spotting animals. Along the way, you’ll also come across the stunning Nthandanyathi Bird Hide and Nhlanganzwani Dam, which are both worth a quick visit.

How Do I Get to Lower Sabie Rest Camp?

If you’re wondering how to get to Lower Sabie, let me break it down for you. The easiest way to reach the camp is by entering through the Crocodile Bridge Gate and heading north. There are a couple of routes you can take:

First, there’s the H4-2, which is a nice, smooth tar road. It’s the quickest route to Lower Sabie, so if you’re in a hurry to start your adventure, this is the way to go.

But if you’re in the mood for a leisurely game drive, then I recommend taking the S28. This route will allow you to take in the sights and sounds of the park as you make your way to Lower Sabie.
