Hey, it’s cherry-picking time!

The Koue Bokkeveld region in South Africa has the ideal weather conditions for cherries to flourish. During a short period, from late November to the end of December, the cherries are just right for picking. That’s when Klondyke Farm, near Ceres, throws open its gates and invites everyone to have a fantastic day outdoors in this bountiful valley. It has been a cherished tradition ever since the very first public harvest way back in 1973.

How does it work?

When you visit the orchards, you’ll receive a container weighing around 1kg. It’s your ticket to fill up with juicy, delicious fruits. Take your time exploring the orchards and carefully selecting red and yellow cherries. Once you’re satisfied with your haul, head over to get them weighed. Each kilogram of cherries costs R80. After that, it’s time to be on your way and savor the fruits of your labor!

Why not make a whole day out of it? Pack a picnic (just remember, no braais allowed) and spend the rest of the day relishing in the sweetness of your freshly-picked cherries under the cool shade of a pine tree! Want to extend your stay? Consider booking a night at Cherry Cottage, located near the orchards.

Here’s some handy information:

• Remember, the farm only accepts card payments. No cash transactions are allowed.
• If you arrive before 10.30am, you can enjoy the cherry-picking experience at half the price. Imagine starting your day off with a breakfast of freshly-picked cherries!
• Please note that large groups arriving in buses must make an appointment in advance.

When you visit the farm, it can get really windy, so it’s a good idea to bring a jersey or windbreaker to stay warm. Also, make sure to wear closed shoes with firm soles for your own safety.

Cherry-picking is a daily activity at the farm, except on Christmas day, and it continues until the end of December. If you plan on visiting in mid-December or later, it’s a good idea to call ahead and check if cherries are still available.

The farm is pet-friendly, which means you can bring your furry friends along. Even the accommodation, including the two cottages and the farmhouse, allows pets.
