Check Out Boetie’s Pub
When you come to this city, the best spot to begin is at its neighborhood hangout. It’s also the final destination after a long day, and oddly enough, the place where you can get garlic.
Hey there! Let me tell you a fascinating story about a pub owner named Boetie. He’s not your everyday pub owner; in fact, he used to be a Springbok truck driver! How cool is that? Boetie decided to settle down in a little town called Nieu-Bethesda and open his own pub. To add a touch of uniqueness, he even planted some garlic. By the way, did you know that Nieu-Bethesda hosts a garlic festival in November? It’s quite the event!
Now, here’s the exciting part – every last Friday of the month, Boetie’s Pub turns into a hub of fun and knowledge. They host a pub quiz where people can showcase their smartness while having a great time. And you know what? They even give out a prize to the best dressed! So not only do you get to show off your brain power, but you also have a chance to strut your stuff in style. How awesome is that?
Wait, there’s more!
Hey there! Welcome to the local craft brewery, a hotspot for dog and beer aficionados like you and me. Here, you’ll find a unique experience that’s all about supporting local talent.
This place is a one-man show. From start to finish, I’m the one handling everything, from brewing the beer to making the cheese and roasting the coffee right here on site. It’s a labor of love, and I believe it makes the whole experience that much more special.
When you step foot into our brewery, you’re not just getting a drink – you’re getting a taste of craftsmanship. I take pride in every step of the process, carefully selecting the finest ingredients and meticulously honing the recipes to create the perfect brew. And you know what? The love and effort I put into it really shines through in the taste.
But it’s not just about the beer here. We’re all about building a community. Our brewery is a place where people can gather, relax, and enjoy the company of both two-legged and four-legged friends. You’ll often see dogs roaming around, serving as furry ambassadors of our friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
So, whether you’re a dog person, a beer person, or both, I invite you to come on down to our local craft brewery. It’s a place where passion and creativity come together, and I guarantee you’ll have a memorable experience. See you soon!
Hey there! Let me tell you about the amazing homemade charcuterie board. It’s like a work of art made with love and care. Imagine a beautiful selection of cheeses and cured meats, all arranged on a wooden board. It’s a feast for the eyes and your taste buds.
When you visit, you’ll find a variety of beers to choose from. There’s also a refreshing cider option. And what goes perfectly with a drink? An artisan-made cheese and charcuterie board, of course! Each cheese and meat is carefully chosen to create the perfect combination of flavors.
But it’s not just about the food and drink. When you arrive, you’ll be warmly welcomed by the friendly staff. They’ll make you feel right at home. And when it’s time to leave, don’t be surprised if they offer you a delicious cup of their own homebrewed coffee. Or maybe you’ll get a jar of preserve made with fruits and vegetables grown right on-site. Talk about a special treat!
Welcome to Stonefolk of Ongeluksloot
Imagine walking through the picturesque landscape of Ongeluksloot, just outside of town. As I take in the scenery, I can’t help but notice the mesmerizing Stonefolk sculptures that adorn the landscape. Created by the talented artist Ryno Greef, these life-sized rock sculptures seem to have burst forth from the very earth itself.
The inspiration for these incredible stone figures can be traced back to the stone figures found in Kaokoland, Namibia, and Marcella de Boom’s masterpiece, “The Dance,” located in Loxton. Drawing from these influences, Greef has crafted a permanent outdoor exhibition that is truly a sight to behold.
Hey there! I’ve got some exciting news for you. There’s a cool 1km circular route waiting for you on the farm. To start your adventure, just head over to the gate marked “Ongeluksloot” next to the gravel road. Drive all the way to the end of the track, and then it’s time to continue on foot. Don’t worry, it’s not a long walk!
As you follow the footpath, you’ll come across the first stone man. Make sure to give him a friendly hello! And keep your eyes peeled because there are more stone men waiting for you in the small kloof.
But that’s not all. If you’re up for a real challenge, why not hike up Compassberg? It’s an exhilarating experience that will take your breath away. Just be prepared for a steep climb and stunning views at the top!
Imagine standing atop Compassberg, the highest peak in the Sneeuberg range, proudly reaching 2,502 meters! It’s an adventure not meant for the faint-hearted, I must say. The journey takes a full day and lasts a good eight hours. Beware, though, as the trail’s signposts are not the best, and the final leg of the trip requires some rock scrambling to reach the peak.
But fear not, my adventurous friend! The effort is well worth it. From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the Karoo. Enveloped in this majestic landscape, you’ll discover a rich diversity of plant and animal life, including the rare Compassberg skolly butterfly, also known as Thestor compassbergae. This enchanting creature can only be found on the slopes of this mountain.
Before setting off on your expedition, it’s important to obtain permission from the landowners. If you need any information or guidance, just head to The Karoo Lamb restaurant in town.

Let me tell you about this pizzeria called Bruno Pizzeria. It was created by an interesting Italian man named Bruno Reolon. He was known for wearing pink speedos and had a unique flair. Now, Carla and Ludolf Smit run the restaurant and the nearby Bethesda guesthouse. They moved to the Platteland to experience the joy of living in the Karoo.
At Bruno Pizzeria, you’ll find a daily blackboard menu. What’s special about this menu is that it includes vegan options, which is quite rare in the Karoo. They also make wood-fired pizzas using local ingredients. To top it off, they garnish their pizzas with greens grown right in their own garden.
Now, don’t get me wrong, Bruno may not be splashing around in the dam outside like he used to. But let me tell you, his essence is still very much alive thanks to the welcoming nature of Carla and Ludolf and their lovely canine companion, Bruno.
Take a Trip to Mariette and Meet Bankie
Before you hit the road and zoom down the country lanes, you’d be remiss not to visit the finest lookout spot in town.
This spot was built by Yvonne van Niekerk as a tribute to her 46-year friendship with Marette Wolfaardt in this town. When you stand here, you’ll see the entire town stretched out before you, with the magnificent Compassberg towering in the background. It’s truly a picture-perfect view and a beautiful way to bid farewell.

Filled with delightful sculptures made of concrete and ground glass, this whimsical home, created by the late Helen Martins, is sure to captivate your imagination.
