It’s a bustling hub of activity, with boats coming and going, fishermen hard at work, and seagulls soaring overhead. The harbor is the heart and soul of Kalk Bay, and it’s what makes this place so special.
There’s something magical about the way the sun reflects off the water and the colorful fishing boats bob up and down in the waves. It’s a scene straight out of a storybook, and it never fails to put a smile on my face.

Once upon a time, there was a place called Kalk Bay. It used to be a place where people hunted whales and mined for precious minerals. But now, it has transformed into a lively center for art and tourism. However, the harbor remains a constant, providing fresh fish to the people of Cape Town and its surrounding areas.
One beautiful summer day, the wind was unusually calm along the Cape coast. It was the perfect opportunity for me to pay a visit to Kalk Bay. Taxi rides in South Africa are usually anything but peaceful, but this time, my journey from Wynberg was surprisingly uneventful. After a smooth ride, I arrived near the small harbor, where the cool waters of False Bay welcomed me.
As always, when I arrived, the train station immediately caught my attention. The sign above the entrance, with its simple blue and white design, is what you’d expect from the Prasa. But the station building itself, painted in soft pastel colors, has a whimsical charm that sets it apart. Nobody knows for sure when Kalk Bay was first established, but it’s not hard to see how the fishing village grew and flourished after the station opened its doors in May 1883. Just nine years later, Kalk Bay was the main supplier of fish to the domestic market in Cape Town, and even today, it continues to operate as a busy harbor.
If you’re looking for freshly caught fish, you’re in luck. You can buy it straight off the boat when you visit.
But before we embark on our adventure, let’s not forget to fuel up with a good meal. And when it comes to dining in Kalk Bay, there’s no better place to start than Kalky’s. This local gem has been serving up the tastiest fish and chips since the 1950s. It’s a casual spot with tables outside, right next to the harbor. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy the view as the fishing boats come back to shore. And with the colorful boats and the sound of seagulls flying overhead, it’s like stepping into a seaside dream.
As I set off to explore the area, I had my sights set on finding a special place. My destination was the lighthouse, an iconic landmark that stands proudly at the end of the pier in the village. This historic structure, built in 1919, is just one of the many aged buildings that can still be found in the charming town of Kalk Bay.
The lighthouse holds a special allure for photographers, attracting them like a magnet. It has become well-known as a subject of stunning photographs, especially during the winter months when colossal waves crash against it, or when the powerful winds of summer send clouds of spray pounding against the harbor wall.
Before Covid, Atlantic Rail used to operate classic steam trains that ran from Cape Town to Kalk Bay and Simon’s Town. But while we wait for those nostalgic rides to resume, you can still hop on the Metrorail for now.
After taking countless photos at the lighthouse, I made my way back towards Main Road. As I strolled along, I stumbled upon a lively scene at the pier. Two massive seals were leisurely basking in the warm sun, completely unfazed by my attempts to capture their beauty on camera or the crowd that had gathered to admire them.
For those who know Kalk Bay well, they understand the vibrant atmosphere of the pier and the main street. It’s a place where people leisurely wander, exploring the various shops and eateries. Many make their way to the well-known Olympia Cafe, a true Kalk Bay institution. However, the newer Salt eatery next door has also gained popularity. With its modern flair and free Wi-Fi, it attracts a younger crowd who are always glued to their phones.
As I stroll down the street, I notice a unique coffee shop called Boot-leggers Coffee Company. Surprisingly, it seems to belong in a bustling city rather than this small town. However, on weekends, it becomes a popular spot for cyclists who ride along the scenic coastal road.
Continuing my walk, I come across a building that has undergone various transformations over the years. It started as a grocery store, then turned into a cafe, and now it amusingly goes by the name ‘Something on Main’. Currently, it serves as a surf shop in this curious area that seems to defy the usual rules of commerce.

The Covid pandemic has definitely brought about some changes in this place. One of those changes is the closure of the famous Kalk Bay Theatre. Up until May 2020, the theatre was located in the old Dutch Reformed Church on Main Road. However, the company that managed the theatre and restaurant could no longer afford the costs of running it, so they had to shut it down.
But here’s the good news: the theatre has reopened in a new location! As I strolled past the Brass Bell, I saw that it now houses the theatre. The Brass Bell is a local institution that started off as a tea room run by the council. Nowadays, it has evolved into a large dining complex with nine different venues where you can enjoy a variety of culinary experiences. And if that’s not enough, there’s even a tidal pool right in front of it and a spectacular view of the crashing waves.
When I entered the converted 1876 vintage Dutch Reformed Church, which used to be the home of Kalk Bay Theatre, I was greeted with a vibrant and creative collective. The space now serves as workspaces for artists and designers, making it an inspiring hub for creativity.
If you really want to experience the spirit of this place, there are a few things you shouldn’t miss. First and foremost, take a refreshing swim in one of the beautiful tidal pools. It’s like a rejuvenating ocean spa that not only clears your mind but also leaves your skin tingling.
Another must-see is the bustling art scene, which offers a myriad of artistic expressions. From paintings to sculptures, you’ll find a diverse range of creative works that will leave you in awe.
But that’s not all. There’s also a delightful boutique called Miss Mrs and Friends that caught me by surprise when I went searching for Kalk Bay Books. It’s a vibrant little store that houses a treasure trove of unique items. As I browsed through the store, I discovered a wide variety of products, including pottery, handmade soaps, and clothing. What sets this boutique apart is that everything is made locally, sourced from about 60 talented designers.
So I asked the owner, Vicky Vorster, how things have been going during the pandemic. And you know what she told me? She said, ‘We’ve been getting so much love and support from our local community, and even people from all over the country have been shopping with us lately, especially folks from Joburg.’ Vicky was really excited about their dog accessory stand. She told me, ‘We’re crazy about our furry friends!’
Hey there! Let me tell you all about the amazing St James Tidal Pool, located just a short walk away from Kalk Bay. This place is not only popular among the locals who love swimming, but it’s also a haven for all sorts of marine creatures. If you bring a dive mask with you, you can explore the underwater world and witness the colorful array of marine life.
When I went to Kalk Bay, I was a bit bummed out to discover that the beloved Kalk Bay Books had moved from its usual corner spot. But don’t worry, I found out that they relocated to the ‘Orange Building’ just a few blocks down the road. And let me tell you, this new space is incredible! It’s flooded with natural light, making it the perfect place for book nerds like me to indulge in some serious page-flipping. The collection of books there is really well-curated, so you’re bound to find something great.
Kalk Bay is a town that really embraces art. One of the first things you’ll notice is the striking black Artvark building on Main Road. It houses a mix of classic and contemporary art, which is a sight to behold. Then there’s Quagga Rare Books and Art, which feels like a cross between a bone museum and an old-fashioned library. It’s like stepping onto a movie set, I kid you not! If you’re into contemporary South African art, make sure to check out Kalk Bay Modern. They have an enormous collection that will leave you in awe.
Oh, and let’s not forget about the Kalk Bay Quarter! This place is a treasure trove of handcrafted jewelry and decor items. You’ll find all sorts of unique pieces that you won’t be able to resist. And when you step outside, you’ll come across locals selling their artwork on mats and tables. These paintings showcase untamed landscapes and beautifully beaded wild animals. It’s truly a feast for the eyes.
While I was wandering along the pier, I stumbled upon an artist who was doing on-the-spot sketches. I was captivated by her talent, but she was a bit shy when it came to photos. When I asked her name, she just smiled and referred to herself as the ‘Elusive Artist On The Pier’. And that’s when it hit me – the charm of this little town lies not just in its stunning location, but also in the colorful and fascinating people it attracts.
For over a century, the Kalk Bay Lighthouse has withstood countless fierce storms and provided guidance for countless fishermen making their way back home. (Photo by Nicole Ludolph)
Daewood cruises along the pier in his trusty “piesang Surprise,” an old VW Passat. “It’s not actually mine. I’m just borrowing it. The owner has had it for 25 years, but he lets me use it because I own the engine: a 1300 Golf.”
Daewood’s engine has been powering this classic car for 17 years. He’s here to do a bit of fishing to catch dinner. Any luck so far? “What? No, man. I just got here. Gotta make sure the kids can eat.”
My name is Sibusiso Matinyenya, and I’m a seamstress from Zimbabwe. My husband and I run a small business where we sell our handmade clothing and bags. You can find us between the Olympia building and the Portuguese restaurant Beira Mar. It’s a great little spot that we stumbled upon thanks to a lucky encounter.
My husband used to go door-to-door in Simon’s Town, selling his art. One day, he met the owner of Beira Mar who was so impressed by his work that she offered him a space to sell his goods right there in front of her restaurant. It was an incredible stroke of luck, and we’ve been selling our creations there for the past six years.
Being able to showcase our products in such a central location has been a blessing. We’ve had the opportunity to connect with so many people in the community and share our passion for art and fashion. It’s amazing how something as simple as setting up a little stall can open up so many doors.
Every day, I wake up excited to head to our little spot between the Olympia building and Beira Mar. I love seeing the familiar faces of our regular customers and meeting new people who stumble upon our unique creations. It’s the interactions with our customers that make this journey truly special.
Our handmade clothing and bags are a labor of love. We pour our hearts and souls into every stitch, making sure that each item is of the highest quality. We take great pride in our work and our customers can see that. It’s such a rewarding feeling when someone falls in love with one of our creations and decides to take it home with them.
If you’re ever in the area, I hope you’ll stop by our little stall between the Olympia building and Beira Mar. You’ll be supporting local artists and getting yourself a one-of-a-kind piece in the process. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank each and every person who has supported our small business over the years. It truly means the world to us.
