In the second film of the Isuzu Ikhaya Lekhaya series, I embark on a journey from East London to my family farm in the Eastern Cape interior. As an investigative journalist, I have a book to write, and there’s a crucial piece of information I must uncover.

On a stormy night, I first met Anneliese Burgess, an award-winning investigative journalist, in her cozy lounge in the village of Sunrise-on-Sea, just up the coast from East London. Her home is filled with books, to the point where there is almost no space to move in one room. The lounge is a vibrant mix of fascinating objects, like string puppets, macrame hangers, and radiant orchids in bloom. It’s a delight for the eyes!

My name is Anneliese, and for more than two decades, I had the privilege of working in the media industry, both on the radio and television. Producing and hosting shows like “Special Assignment” and “Truth Commission Special Report” was a thrilling experience. However, these days, my focus has shifted to the power of the written word. I am currently co-editor of the dynamic newspaper, VryeWeekblad, and the author of “Heist! South Africa’s Cash-In-Transit Epidemic Uncovered.”

As I sit here on this stormy night, I am engrossed in my latest endeavor – a brand-new book. This project is quite different from my previous work. While my previous book involved intense investigative research, this one takes a different approach. It is a journey into the depths of the heart, a personal exploration. In many ways, it feels like an investigation, but instead of searching for facts, I am delving into the core of my being.

Through confessional writing, I am examining the experiences and influences that have shaped me into the person I am today. It is a captivating process that allows me to recount the significant moments and reflect on how they have shaped my life. In a sense, this project could be considered a memoir, a collection of heartfelt stories.

Right now, though, Anneliese’s story has some gaps in it.

“It’s weird how memories can be. I can remember some things as feelings, but not as images,” she says.

So, to fill in those gaps and get the full story, Anneliese is going back to her childhood home.

In the kitchen, there’s a basket with a flask, milk, coffee, and mugs – all packed and ready. Outside, in the midst of the storm, stands a strong Isuzu D-MAX with a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine. Its tank is full, ready to take us on a road trip. We’ll go from the Eastern Cape coast, passing through farmlands, homelands, and heartlands, until we reach a small town on the edge of the Drakensberg mountains called Indwe.

When I was growing up, I lived on a farm near Indwe. The house we lived in, which has always been my family’s home, holds a collection of photo albums that contain the clues I need to carry on with my book.
