Embarking on the Journey: Sir Lowry’s Pass

As I set off on my journey, I began by ascending Sir Lowry’s Pass, leaving behind Somerset West. Reaching the top, I couldn’t resist but stop and admire the breathtaking coastal view. It felt like the perfect starting point for my adventure. Sir Lowry’s Pass, originally known as Elandspad, was constructed in 1830. The name was changed due to the presence of numerous antelope roaming the Cape. It’s truly remarkable to imagine the arduous climb oxwagons made in the early 1820s.

Delightful Discoveries: Peregrine Farm Stall and the Overberg

As I hit the road again, the CX-5 showed off its power as it cruised through the lush greenery of the Overberg. This time of year, everything is vibrant, with blue cranes gracefully dancing about and the majestic Hottentot Hollands mountain range painting a breathtaking backdrop. I have to say, this road is a dream come true for any driver, especially after the recent upgrades.

Right before reaching Elgin, I stumbled upon Peregrine Farm Stall, which turned out to be much more than just an ordinary farm stall. The owners, who have been running it since 1964, have truly transformed it into something special. Now, it’s not just a place to buy fresh farm produce; it’s a whole experience. You’ll find a delightful artisanal bakery, a charming farm shop, a fantastic restaurant, and even a collection of unique stalls outside. But what caught my eye the most were the two buses parked nearby.

The first bus is like a roaming library, filled with books waiting to be discovered. I spent some time browsing through its shelves, finding literary gems that I had never heard of before. As an avid reader, this mobile library was a pleasant surprise.

The second bus, well, it’s a double-decker marvel. It has been converted into a clever little shop, brimming with all sorts of treasures. From adorable Lambkin stuffed toys to stylish vellies, this shop accommodates every taste and interest.

Did you know that South Africans are expected to consume a staggering 225 million loaves of bread next month? It’s mind-boggling just how much bread is needed to feed everyone. No wonder the wheat fields seem to stretch on forever.

Ou Meul, Riviersonderend

I had the most amazing coffee in hand as I hopped back into the CX-5. Let me tell you, it was like driving in absolute comfort. The CX-5 surprised me with its sophistication – it was far more refined than I expected from an SUV. My next stop was the original shop, Ou Meul, in Riviersonderend. It’s hard to believe that this place has become a thriving franchise throughout the Western Cape. Despite the challenges of Covid, their spirit remained unshaken, and it was inspiring to see them bustling with customers. Not only could I get my hands on some delicious Bootlegger coffee and their famous pies, but I also discovered a variety of other tantalizing goodies. Next door, there were tempting takeaways ranging from bags and crockery to cosmetics and even generously-sized bottled fruit that made me wonder how I’d fit it all in my car.

Tradouw Pass

On my journey from Riviersonderend to Port Elizabeth on the N2, I decided to take a different route and venture onto the R62. The road took me through the challenging Tradouw Pass, with its sharp bends that demanded skill from any driver. However, I had complete confidence in my CX-5. This diesel car not only runs quietly, but also packs a punch when you need it. It effortlessly handles any situation with its ample power.

The CX-5 also impressed me with its roadholding capabilities. As I drove through the famous Tradouw Pass, I felt like I was living a dream. This pass, created by the legendary pass maker Thomas Bain in the 1800s, now winds its way through the folds of the Langeberg crags. The scenic road, now paved with tar, is accompanied by the breathtaking Tradouw River. I couldn’t resist stopping at one of the lay-bys to take in the serenade of the black eagles and the sounds of the rushing water. It truly felt like a magical experience.

Just a few kilometers past the pass on the R62 lies Barrydale, where we decided to stop for lunch. It’s not really a town, but more like a whole way of life, with a big “L”. It’s a popular destination for city dwellers from Cape Town who are in search of some peace and tranquility. Barrydale has everything you could ever want, from a charming old hotel to beautiful handwoven goods made at Barrydale Weavers, and even a long-standing tradition of building with dry stones. But the real heart of this place, the unofficial center of town, is Dean Farrow’s Diesel and Crème.

Everyone loves this place, from bikers to tourists, families, and even the young and old alike. So, naturally, we decided to give it a try. We ordered a round of burgers and milkshakes, and let me tell you, they were enormous. No one could finish their meal because the portions were just too big. As for the CX-5, it didn’t seem to mind at all. It sipped fuel at a rate of just 6.7 liters per 100 kilometers, which is pretty impressive for a large SUV.

The Amazing Karoo and the Quirky Ronnie’s Sex Shop

In a completely different part of town, things took a turn and became considerably less hectic. Lots of travelers choose to end their Route 62 adventures in the peaceful town of Barrydale, which suits those of us who prefer a quieter atmosphere. Personally, having a reliable companion like the CX-5 feels like a stroke of genius. The fact that the CX-5 is dependable goes beyond just being a clever advertising campaign. Just take a moment to admire the immense Langeberg East Mountains that have been standing tall for a mind-boggling 2500 million years. Let that sink in…

It’s a whole different world here, miles away from civilization. Out of nowhere, you’ll stumble upon the quirky Ronnie’s Sex Shop. Despite its mischievous name, Ronnie’s Sex Shop isn’t actually an adult store. It’s a funny prank played on the owner by his friends, who added the word ‘sex’ to the original ‘Ronnie’s Shop’ sign outside. Take a break, grab a cup of coffee, and marvel at the thousands of signatures left by visitors over the years. Ronnie’s Sex Shop has become a true South African legend.

Seweweekspoort Pass

And so it began… things took a thrilling turn. Instead of going down the R62 to Oudtshoorn, I decided to take a different route – a dirt road that led me up to the Seweweekspoort Pass, the highest point in the Western Cape. This was going to be the ultimate test for the Mazda CX-5…

And boy, did it pass with flying colors. It turns out that the CX-5 performs just as well on dirt roads as it does on paved ones. Thanks to its intelligent traction control and intuitive All Wheel Drive system, the CX-5 remained impressively stable on the gravel.

The Seweweekspoort Pass is not just any road – it is a part of the Swartberg and Towerkop Nature Reserves and a recognized Unesco World Heritage Site. When it was constructed in 1861 by the brother-in-law of Thomas Bain, the mastermind behind the Tradouw Pass and Bainskloof, it instantly became a testament to engineering excellence and a marvel of its time.

The pass is an easy drive. It’s mostly flat, with the dirt road following the river’s path through the folds. But don’t let that fool you. It’s high up here, and it can get quite chilly in the shade of those impressive cliffs. We pulled over in the middle of the pass, parked the car, and just took a moment to listen. The sound of the water flowing, the sight of a black eagle soaring above, and…nothing else. It was pure magic. This is why I love getting away. It’s about discovering new roads and holding onto those special moments that make life memorable. The CX-5 gave us the freedom to explore less-traveled routes and come back with a multitude of memories. Keenan and Ragmat, I want to thank you both for your suggestions. They really inspired us.
