Reuben Riffel on Cape Town

Hey there! I’m Reuben Riffel, a chef and restaurateur. I’m here to give you some hot tips on the best spots in Cape Town for a truly special occasion. So, let’s get started!

You know what’s cool? I was actually born and raised in Franschhoek, but I’ve got a special place in my heart for Cape Town. There’s something about this city that’s just different. And you know what makes it so unique? It’s not one of those big cities. No siree! It’s got this beautiful blend of cultures that are all uniquely South African. But for me, I feel like I really understand Cape Town through its people – the artisans, the artists, the crafty folks, the spice masters. Oh, and we can’t forget about the breathtaking mountains and beaches!

Okay, now let’s say you’ve got some out-of-town friends coming over. What do you do? Well, let me tell you! First up, you gotta take them to Cape Point. Trust me, it’s like stepping into a postcard – pure beauty for the eyes. Then, head on over to Kalk Bay for some tasty fish and chips. It’s a must! If you’re up for a little nature time, make a stop at Kirstenbosch Gardens for a lovely picnic. And, if you’re feeling adventurous, take a drive down Chapman’s Peak to get to The Foodbarn in Noordhoek. It not only serves up amazing food but also offers the most breathtaking views of Cape Town you can imagine.

The best restaurant meal I’ve had recently was at Liam Tomlin’s Chefs Warehouse. Let me tell you, it was absolutely amazing. The flavors were out of this world, and the presentation was top-notch. I couldn’t have asked for a better dining experience.

I also want to give a shoutout to a few other restaurants that I love. The Pot Luck Club is one of them. The food there is so delicious, and the atmosphere is so relaxed. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a great meal. Another favorite of mine is George Jardine’s Bakery at Jordan. Not only is the food incredible, but the setting is so peaceful, and the wine selection is fantastic. And let’s not forget about Waterkloof restaurant. The food there is absolutely delicious, and the views are simply breathtaking.

There’s also an annual event in Cape Town that I never miss: Taste of Cape Town. It’s such a fun and vibrant event that feels like a colorful carnival. And the best part is that I get to catch up with my fellow chefs. It’s always a great time.

When it comes to weekend getaways in the Cape, my favorite place is Paternoster on the West Coast. It has such a unique charm with its small-town atmosphere and that classic West Coast vibe. The people are friendly, and the seafood, especially the crayfish, is absolutely delicious. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy some time away from the city.

One thing I absolutely want to do in the Cape is go shark-cage diving. It’s been on my bucket list for a while, and I can’t wait to experience it.

If you’re looking for the best coffee spot in Franschhoek, you have to try Terbodore Coffee Roasters on Goederust Farm. It’s located in La Motte, Franschhoek, and they serve the most amazing coffee.

If you’re up for a great walk in Franschhoek, I recommend Cat se Pad. It’s a beautiful trail that takes you from Haute Cabrière to the top of the Franschhoek Pass.

When it comes to choosing a good red wine for a special occasion, my top picks are Ernie Els’s Big Easy and Jordan’s Cabernet Sauvignon. Both are delicious and perfect for celebrating.

The Banting diet is a popular choice, but it’s important to remember that it may not work for everyone. There’s no such thing as a “miracle” diet, so it’s wise to approach it with caution and do your own research.

If you want to be a great chef, there are a few qualities you should cultivate. Be disciplined, stay curious, and always work hard. These traits will take you far in the culinary world.

Every Sunday I spend quality time with my children, making sure to create cherished memories together.

Money has a way of holding immense power and influence in our lives, affecting the choices we make and the paths we take.

Right after that, I dive headfirst into the bustling world of work, ready to tackle whatever the day brings.

When I find myself waking up in the middle of the night, I love to soothe my soul with the gentle melodies of slow jazz, allowing the music to transport me to a place of tranquility.

One day, in the not too distant future, I dream of mastering the guitar, creating my melodies that resonate with my heart.
