Discovering Cape Town Through the Eyes of Chef Pete Goffe-Wood

London may have been my birthplace, but Johannesburg raised me. In 1983, I made the bold decision to embark on a new adventure and found myself in Cape Town, ready to take on the world.

What makes Cape Town truly special, you wonder? Well, it’s the way this city constantly reinvents itself, leaving you in awe of its ever-changing beauty.

If there’s one thing you should experience in Cape Town, it’s the breathtaking views from atop Table Mountain. Of course, we have to consider the unpredictable weather, but when it cooperates, it’s a moment you’ll treasure forever. And to truly understand this city’s essence, a trip out to the Stellenbosch wine region is a must. Specifically, George Jardine’s restaurant on the Jordan estate is an absolute gem. Not only will you indulge in the finest cuisine the Cape has to offer, but you’ll also be treated to an unmatched panoramic view of the picturesque winelands.

Now, let’s talk about my recent gastronomic adventure. There’s one place that stood out from the rest – Cheyne’s in Hout Bay. Their Asian-inspired tapas are a work of art. Each dish is meticulously crafted, showcasing Chef Cheyne’s creative brilliance. And the best part? The flavors are just as spectacular as the presentation. It’s a dining experience that will leave you wanting more.

I have a few favorite restaurants that I really enjoy visiting. One of them is Jordan Restaurant & Bakery in Stellenbosch. They have a unique quality because their menu is always changing. Every time I go there, I get to try something new and exciting. Another restaurant that I love is La Mouette in Sea Point. The food there is absolutely outstanding, and the service is amazing.

There’s an annual event in Cape Town that I make sure to attend every year. It’s called the Argus Cycle race, and it’s an incredible experience. Whether I’m riding in the race or just cheering on the participants, the energy and excitement are unlike anything else. The whole route is filled with a festive atmosphere that you don’t want to miss. Another event that I absolutely love is the National Cheese Festival. It’s a perfect day out for the whole family, with lots of delicious food and great wine.

When I need a weekend getaway, my favorite place to go is Cape Infanta. It’s a small fishing village located at the mouth of the Breede River. What I love about it is that it’s a remote and untouched place, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s the perfect spot to escape from it all and truly unwind.

On my to-do list, I still want to experience Afrika Burns and go shark-cage diving.

When it comes to finding the best coffee in my area, I can’t get enough of Dario’s Café in Hout Bay.

If you’re looking for a great walk, I highly recommend exploring the contour paths above Chapman’s Peak.

As someone who supports the Banting diet, I truly believe in the science behind it and have seen it work wonders for myself.

When it comes to choosing a good red wine for a special occasion, you can’t go wrong with Newton Johnson Family Vineyards’ Pinot Noir.

A good chef possesses qualities like patience, passion, and perseverance.

Right now, I’m collaborating with comedian Chris Forrest on a hilarious two-man comedy show centered around food for this year’s Grahamstown Festival of Arts.

When Sundays roll around, I like to gather up my friends and see if any of them are free for a leisurely lunch.

Working hard is the key to earning money.

Right after that, I’ll head over to the office and see what the upcoming week has in store for me.

Whenever I wake up in the middle of the night, I spend some time reading until I start feeling sleepy again.

I dream about the day when I’ll be doing interviews over a satellite phone while sailing on a luxurious yacht in some far-off location, gathering material for my latest book.
