I’m just about to turn 50, but I’ve got plenty of stories to share. Growing up in Dublin, Ireland was quite the adventure. The city’s vibrant energy never failed to leave me in awe.
But let me tell you, Cape Town is a place that truly stole my heart. It had me from the moment I set foot there, and it still leaves me breathless even now. The city and its people are a colorful tapestry of diversity, constantly surprising me with their stories and perspectives.
Whenever I have friends or family from out of town visiting, I make sure to take them on a journey they won’t forget. We embark on a drive along the stunning Chapman’s Peak, where every twist and turn unfolds a jaw-dropping view of the ocean. And to top it off, we stop for a delightful lunch at The Foodbarn in Noordhoek, where the cuisine matches the beauty of the surroundings.
You know what’s surprising? I never eat at my own restaurants. I couldn’t properly unwind if I did. I prefer to be a customer, experiencing the joy and excitement of a good meal just like anyone else.
Wow, I just had the most amazing meal at Hallelujah. It’s the kind of place I love to go to when I’m not working. They have this relaxed and down-to-earth vibe, and the food is absolutely delicious. The staff is super friendly too, which makes the whole experience even better. I recommend going for the second seating so you can really take your time and enjoy the meal without feeling rushed.
There are a few other restaurants that I really enjoy as well. Jordan is one of them. George, the chef, creates these incredible dishes that are made with local and seasonal ingredients, bursting with flavor. If you’re lucky enough to score a reservation at The Test Kitchen or The Pot Luck Club, you won’t be disappointed. Both places offer amazing Asian flavors and have such cool and stylish settings. Another spot I love is Mondiall, located at the Waterfront. The chef there, Peter Tempelhoff, is a master at crafting classic dishes that will blow you away. And on a sunny Sunday afternoon, you have to check out Bascule Bar for some tapas on their terrace. The list of great places to eat in this city just goes on and on, both in the bustling urban areas and the beautiful winelands.
When it comes to annual events in Cape Town that get me excited, I never miss the Cape Argus Cycle Tour. This event brings so much positive energy to the city, and I always make sure to find a spot where I can watch the riders zoom by. Speaking of getaways, my current favorite weekend escape is Ellerman House. It’s an absolute gem with its stunning art collection, impressive wine cellar, beautiful gardens, and the incredible food created by Veronica Canha-Hibbert. The best part? It’s just a five-minute drive from our home, yet it feels like a world away.
There are still a few things on my Cape Town bucket list that I’m eager to experience. One of them is attending a concert at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. I’ve heard it’s an amazing venue with breathtaking views. And of course, I can’t forget about finally participating in the Cape Argus Cycle Tour. One day, I’m determined to get fit enough to conquer it!
Now, let’s talk about coffee. In my area, the absolute best coffee can be found at Deluxe Coffeeworks, located in Street Food on Bree. Trust me when I say it’s worth a visit!
One of my favorite places to go for a walk in the city is De Waal Park – it’s a hidden gem right in the middle of everything. What’s even better is that it’s a dog-friendly park, so my dog Bailey and I love going there. It’s super close to my house too, just a five-minute walk from Bree Street. If you do visit, try to meet the group of regulars who gather there on Friday nights. They’re always up for a glass of wine at the big table!
I’ve heard a lot about the Banting diet, but you know what? I’ve also heard that exercise can be just as effective. It’s good to have options, right?
When it comes to drinking red wine, I don’t wait for a special occasion. I like to enjoy a glass every now and then. Right now, my favorites are Mr P Pinot Noir and Nabygelegen’s Scaramanga. They’re both really delicious.
In my opinion, every great chef needs three things: confidence, a thick skin, and stamina. It takes a lot of work and dedication to succeed in the culinary world, but those qualities will definitely help.
I’m so excited to share that we recently published our book, Tapas. It’s been a long journey, but it’s finally out there for everyone to see. And I’m already working on my next book, Street Food, which I hope to finish before the end of next year. It’s going to be a fun project!
