Final Thoughts
So, there you have it – my insider’s guide to White River. Whether you’re a nature lover, an adventure seeker, a foodie, or simply looking to unwind, this charming town has something to offer you. So pack your bags, hit the road, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime. White River is waiting!
If you’re on your way to Kruger, don’t just breeze through White River – it’s worth stopping for more than just a quick break and a cup of coffee. Trust me, I’ve been coming here since I was a kid!
Hey there! Let me tell you about this awesome farm stall I discovered. It’s got a secret inside – a hidden pancake bar and deli! And you know what’s even better? They sell locally made, organic produce. How cool is that?
Now, let me introduce myself. My name is Mia Louw, and I’m a true Lowvelder. I recently moved back to my hometown of Nelspruit after spending some time in the Eastern Cape. When I was growing up, I used to spend my Saturdays in White River, which is not far from here. My mom and I would play sports and check out the amazing art galleries in the area.
As I wander through the Lowveld National Botanical Garden, which is located just 15 kilometres away from town, I find myself immersed in the beauty of nature. Alongside the enchanting Crocodile River, I take leisurely walks, surrounded by the tranquil atmosphere. During the wet season, I make sure to visit the Cascades Viewpoint, depicted in this captivating image by Mia Louw.
As I sit on the deck of my cozy bush cottage, positioned high above the Plaston Valley, a breathtaking sight catches my eye. A vibrant turaco catches my attention as it flits from one branch to another with exuberance, filling the air with its melodious chirps. The early morning sunlight gently filters through the lush foliage, creating a soothing green hue that bathes the surroundings. This dense canopy serves as a haven for bushbabies, who had their playful escapades on the rooftop barely an hour ago. Their joyous antics serve as a delightful alarm clock, welcoming me to another day of bliss.
I reach out for a warm cup of coffee, relishing every sip as I bask in the soft sunlight that streams into the room, just like the pale geckos gracefully traversing the beams of the bedroom ceiling. These nimble creatures await their unsuspecting prey, showing no mercy to foolish insects that dare to venture too close.
I live in a cozy bungalow on René Eloff’s smallholding. René is an artist and the wife of the late Zakkie Eloff, a renowned wildlife artist. My mom and René have been friends for a long time, but I haven’t seen her in ages.
When my husband Hanc and I arrived, we were greeted by Fudge, a staffie with a quirky underbite. René warned us not to let him into the cottage, as he has a tendency to make himself at home.
White River is a special place filled with artists, farmers, and former city dwellers who have decided to live amidst the natural beauty of the bush, far away from the chaos of the city. This combination creates a unique and down-to-earth atmosphere. The streets are adorned with tall trees, and as we drive along the main road, I notice a delightful mishmash of small shops.
As I step into Kraaines, I’m immediately captivated by the treasure trove of gems filling every nook and cranny. It’s a paradise for collectors like me, filled with second-hand furniture and bric-a-brac that speaks to my soul. Willie Ferreira, a retired teacher who has lovingly curated this shop for over three decades, welcomes me warmly. It’s clear that he takes immense pride in this place he calls home.
As we strike up a conversation, Willie quickly makes a connection: “Are you Clive’s daughter?” It’s that small-town charm at play, where everyone seems to know everyone. Especially if your father happened to be a teacher, it seems.
White River, nestled amongst the lush Lowveld bush and embraced by gently rolling hills, is often mistaken for just another sleepy farming town. Most people simply see it as a convenient stop on the way from Joburg to Numbi Gate, the nearest entrance to Kruger Park. But there’s so much more to discover in this hidden gem.
When I drive just outside of town, I pass a farm stall that has a beaded wire sheep guarding the entrance. Not far from there, I arrive at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre. As I stroll along the stylish barn-like porch, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when I see the bunting and stars hanging from the corrugated iron roof.
Going window shopping with my mom was always a delightful experience, but what sets this place apart is its unique blend of indoor and outdoor spaces. It’s more than just a collection of shops; it’s an entire lifestyle. One of my favorite things to do is to look for Rooikat, a shop owner’s chubby cat who is a familiar face to regular visitors. There’s a sign near all the coffee shops that kindly asks not to give Rooikat any milk because he’s allergic. In the photo, Rooikat is stretched out, just like he always is in real life.
Imagine stepping into a world of tranquility, where vibrant gardens, enticing restaurants, captivating art galleries, and charming shops await you at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre. It’s a place that holds a special significance for me and my mom – the first shop we always visit is Hans van der Merwe & Son, the esteemed craftsmen behind exquisite furniture. While we peruse the beautiful pieces, we let our imaginations run wild, picturing ourselves in a lavish safari lodge, just like the ones these stunning creations adorn throughout the country.
At one time, a majestic jacaranda tree stood sentry at the entrance, its grandeur welcoming visitors with open arms. Sadly, the passage of time took its toll, and the tree now lies fallen.
What makes White River truly enchanting is the juxtaposition of an adventurous spirit reminiscent of the big game reserves against the backdrop of picturesque rural agriculture. The untamed beauty of the surrounding wilderness merges harmoniously with the emerald hues of expansive pine and gumtree plantations. Rolling hills adorned with rows of vibrant orange and luscious macadamia orchards complete the idyllic scene.
Standing by Pine Lake Resort, I can see the Pine Lake Inn just across the water – though, both places defy their names by being situated on the shores of the Longmere Dam. The view is serene, with the image of the Pine Lake Inn mirroring in the calm waters. It’s a sight that immediately puts me at ease.
Getting to Longmere Dam is an adventure. The gravel road meanders through a picturesque landscape, passing charming country estates along the way. If you visit on the weekends, you’ll likely encounter a lot of cyclists enjoying the dusty road. Nature lovers would feel right at home with the scenic route.
Just across the dam is the striking White River Country Estate. Its name comes from the slender, muddy river that peacefully flows through the golf course. It’s a picture-perfect location, surrounded by natural beauty.
As I sit on the patio at the Pine Lake Inn, sipping my tea, I can sense a bustling energy from across the dam. The Lowveld Triathlon is in full swing, and the air is thick with humidity. You can feel the spirit of competition in every breath you take.
As I step into Da Loose Mongoose, the playful sounds of children fill the air, adding a vibrant energy to the garden. It’s the perfect place to escape the scorching sun and seek solace beneath the shade of towering trees.
Entering Anton and Hanlie Bosch’s art studio feels like stepping into a cool oasis. The studio, housed in a concrete shed, is a treasure trove of unique ceramic creations that are both strange and wonderful. The Bosch family’s artistic talent extends to Nina Bosch Porcelain, located nearby, and Ezra Bosch’s Studio, just around the corner.
Our final stop is René’s studio, a rugged yet inviting space. The rectangular room boasts pristine white walls that contrast beautifully with the abundant natural light streaming through the oversized windows. It’s impossible not to notice René’s fascination with owls, though her artistic interpretation is anything but conventional. Her vibrant and wildly colorful owl paintings are a true feast for the eyes.
As I sit in the driver’s seat, the lush greenery blurs across the windshield. A turaco, its vibrant feathers catching my eye, flits past. Reluctantly, I turn the key and start the car. It’s time to leave this place, but our short stay has left an indelible mark on my heart.
Three memorable stops
An ancient fig tree
Make sure to visit the 120-year-old fig tree on Chief Mgiyeni Khumalo Drive, right next to Phat Boys Beer House. Legend has it that this tree is the very heart of the town, the place where it all began. Once a parsonage, the old post office used to stand nearby.
The vibrant local market
Hey there! I want to tell you about a couple of cool places you should definitely check out if you’re in the area. Let’s start with the Bagdad Centre. Every second Saturday from 8am to noon, they have this awesome event with live music, fresh produce, arts and crafts, and even beer from the Sabie Brewing Company! And if you get hungry, don’t worry because there are lots of great restaurants to choose from too. You can reach them at 0137500469.
Now, let’s talk about Rottcher Wineries. This place is a winery like no other. They offer free wine tastings, which is already pretty amazing. But what makes them really special is Frank Theron’s orange wines, liqueurs, and gins that he makes himself. They’re so unique! And to top it off, they’re bottled in these super cool rugged bottles made by a local potter named Antjie Newton. If you’re up for a unique tasting experience, this is the place to go. Give them a call at 0137513472.
When I’m in the mood for some leisurely window shopping, there’s nothing quite like a stroll through the charming Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre. With its delightful courtyard, meandering walkways, and picturesque landscaping, it’s a breeze to explore.
So, where are the best spots favored by the locals?

Kate Barnett, the owner of a local shop, has a great suggestion for you.
