However, none of them can quite compare to the awe-inspiring beauty and captivating history of Ilha de Moçambique, also known as the Island of Mozambique.

When you set foot on Ilha de Moçambique, you are transported back in time. The island is a living testament to its glorious past, with remnants of colonial fortresses, churches, and mansions that have stood the test of time for five centuries. Its name, simply referred to as “Ilha” by the locals, encapsulates the island’s charm and allure.

Ilha de Moçambique served as Portugal’s trading and administrative capital for the region starting from the sixteenth century. It remained a vital hub for Mozambique until the country’s capital shifted to Maputo in the early twentieth century.

Recognized as a UNESCO historic site in 1991, Ilha de Moçambique boasts significant historical landmarks. One of these is the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Baluarte, constructed in 1522. It holds the distinction of being the oldest European building in the southern hemisphere. Additionally, the island features several remarkable forts, such as the mighty Fortaleza de São Sebastião, the small Fortim-Igreja de Santo António, and the Ilha-Fortim de São Lourenço, perched on a coral outcrop just south of the island itself.

I was amazed when I first saw the Ilha-Fortim de Sao Lourenço. It’s this incredible fortress sitting right on top of a coral formation, just off the coast of Ilha de Moçambique.

I visited the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Baluarte, a beautiful chapel built in 1522, which sits on a rocky formation on Ilha de Moçambique.

What’s there to do on Ilha de Moçambique?

This small island, measuring just three kilometers long and 600 meters wide at its widest point, offers a plethora of activities to keep you entertained. Whether you’re strolling along the cobblestone streets and capturing photos of the colonial ruins, chartering a traditional sailboat called a dhow to explore the nearby beaches and islands, touring the impressive Palace Museum at the Palace of Sao Paulo, or exploring the island’s magnificent fortresses, you’ll never run out of things to do. And after a day of sightseeing, make sure to grab a drink and watch the colorful sunset over the ocean from one of the beautiful beach spots.

Where to stay in Ilha de Moçambique

When it comes to finding a place to stay in Ilha de Moçambique, don’t worry. There are plenty of great options for every budget. Personally, I stayed at Patio dos Quintalinhos and it was perfect. The private room was a bit of a splurge, but not too pricey for my backpacker’s budget. I even treated myself to a few lazy afternoons by the pool or on the rooftop terrace, where I could enjoy a gorgeous view of the fishing beach.

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, you might consider Ruby Backpackers. They have a delightful rooftop area where you can soak up the glorious Mozambique sun. Plus, their bar is friendly and they offer super comfy backpacker dorms.

There’s nothing quite like the view from a rooftop overlooking the ocean and the sand.

Where to eat on Ilha de Moçambique

Fortunately, there are plenty of restaurants on Ilha de Moçambique that will let you experience the best flavors of Mozambique. One of my favorites is Café Central, which opened in August 2013. It’s located on the main street, right across from Books & Bottles and the Missonga Craft Shop. Not only does it have an amazing rooftop view, but it also offers a diverse menu to choose from.

Although I made it my mission to savor every local dish possible, I must say that my top choice is Restaurante Reliquias. They serve the juiciest prawns I’ve ever tasted. Another restaurant that impressed me was the one at O Escondidinho Hotel, where I ordered an incredibly delicious Matapa.

How to Get to Ilha de Moçambique

If you’re planning a visit to Ilha de Moçambique, you’ll likely spend the night in Nampula beforehand. Finding accommodations in Nampula is easy, just check out the options here. In the morning, there are several buses and chapas that make the direct trip from Nampula to Ilha de Moçambique. The journey takes about 3 hours, and it’s a comfortable ride. Alternatively, you can drive to Ilha de Moçambique in your own car, which is a straightforward 170km trip.

Once you arrive at Lumbo, the end point of the highway on the mainland, you’ll need to cross a sturdy and well-maintained bridge that stretches for 3.5km. This bridge connects the mainland to the island of Ilha de Moçambique.
