If you’re in Victoria Falls, it’s just a two-hour drive through Hwange’s Nantwich Gate to get to Robins Camp in Zimbabwe.

Now, let me take you back in time to my last visit to Robins Camp ten years ago. Back then, it was falling apart and looked like it had been abandoned. The walls were crumbling, the roofs were collapsing, and there was nobody around to help. It was like a ghost town.

But guess what? In the past year, something truly amazing happened. They brought Robins Camp back to life in such a remarkable way that both loyal visitors and newcomers are absolutely thrilled about it. It’s like a brand new camp that everyone is excited to experience.

I can’t help but marvel at the transformation of the entire camp. From the look-out tower to the charming thatched bungalows and chalets, every aspect has undergone a thorough renovation. Even the dining area, lounge, bar, and gardens have been given a fresh new lease of life.

But amidst all these changes, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the old, pioneering days of Robins. The atmosphere still carries the same spirit, evoking memories as strong as the sweet smell of fresh ellie dung.

As I walked into the main dining area, I couldn’t help but be captivated by its charm. The space was inviting, with a warm and cozy ambiance that made me feel right at home. The Matabele-inspired interiors, adorned with traditional decor, added a touch of authenticity to the experience.

When I entered my room, I was greeted by comfort and simplicity. The king-size bed looked incredibly inviting, and I knew I would have a great night’s sleep. The room also had twin beds, making it perfect for families. I was delighted to see that all the rooms were equipped with air conditioning, fans, and mosquito nets, ensuring a comfortable stay. The en-suite bathroom with a high-pressure shower, powered by solar energy, was an added bonus.

As I made my way to the pool area, I decided to relax on one of the sun loungers. With a cold Zambezi Lager in hand, I watched the incredible sight of wildlife gathering at the nearby waterhole. Elephants gracefully roamed, while buffalo, impalas, and kudus made their presence known. The baboons, a playful troop, often ventured into the camp, and the banded mongooses would join us for sundowners, curiously sipping from the bird baths.

When it came to dining, I was spoilt for choice. The large dining veranda offered wholesome buffets and exquisite à la carte meals. Every few nights, we had the pleasure of a traditional braai, infusing the air with mouthwatering aromas. What truly stood out was the exceptional service provided by the Zimbabwean staff, who went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction.

Just a few kilometers to the north, you’ll find the Deka River, where herds of more than 100 elephants and up to 2,000 buffalos gather to quench their thirst. And to the south, near Big Tom’s River, a dominant pride of lions rules the land. So you never know what incredible wildlife sightings you’ll come across.

Speaking of wildlife, let me tell you about a hidden gem in Hwange: Deteema and Deka. These two places have long been cherished secrets among safari enthusiasts like you and me.

Now, picture this: during the dry months of September and October, over 1,000 elephants gather at Deteema and Deka every single day to drink from the water sources. It’s an awe-inspiring sight and is considered one of the most remarkable wildlife events in all of Africa.

But that’s not all. The dam and springs at Deteema attract hundreds of Cape buffalo, as well as giraffe, zebra, and kudu. They all come together, vying for space and trying to avoid the watchful eyes of the lions.

I want to tell you about an incredible place called the Kalahari grasslands. It’s located west of Deteema and it’s home to some truly amazing wildlife. Just near the source of the Deka River, you can find herds of magnificent animals like sable, roan antelope, zebra, wildebeest, elephant, and tsessebe. In fact, this is often the only place in Hwange where you can see tsessebe. It’s truly a sight to behold!

Imagine yourself standing on a ridge, gazing out at the source of the Deka River. The Deka Camp offers this breathtaking view, surrounded by sprawling grasslands. It’s a truly magnificent sight.

These two campsites in Zimbabwe, once forgotten but still prestigious, have found new life under the caring hands of Machaba Safaris. Now privately managed, they have been transformed into luxurious tented camps that embody the spirit of modern safaris.

Sitting on a historical picnic site, Deteema Springs Camp is a wonder to behold. Just one kilometer upstream from the dam, this camp boasts eight tents perched upon elevated platforms. From here, you can marvel at the springs flowing from the majestic calcrete cliffs across the camp. As I stayed in one of the eight canvas and thatched huts perched high on a ridge, I was treated to breathtaking sunrise views. It was truly a remarkable experience.

But the highlight of my trip had to be Deka Camp. This hidden gem is located near the Botswana border and offers the most exclusive and remote experience in northern Hwange. During my visit, a thunderstorm rolled in, creating a dramatic backdrop as lions roared from both sides of the camp. It was like being in the middle of a nature symphony.

One of the best things about Deka Camp is that it feels like you have the entire area to yourself. It’s a true oasis of serenity and tranquility. So, if you’re looking for a unique and intimate safari experience, Deka Camp is the place to be.
