My Adventure in Kruger National Park: No Car, No Problem!

Hey there, fellow adventurers! So, listen up because I’ve got an epic story to share with you. Picture this: I had recently sold my car, but that wasn’t going to stop me from experiencing the wonders of Kruger National Park. Nope! I decided to take on a crazy challenge – I was going to explore Kruger without a vehicle. You know what? It turned out to be an amazing adventure. Let me tell you all about it.

Base camp: Phalaborwa

Instead of staying inside Kruger National Park, I chose to set up camp in the town of Phalaborwa. Why? Well, it’s super close to the park gates! In fact, it only took me about twenty minutes to walk from my accommodations to the entrance of the park.

Getting there

If you’re planning a trip from Johannesburg to Phalaborwa, there are a few transportation options available. Both Translux and City to City operate daily buses that run between the two cities. If you prefer flying, you can also take a South African Airways flight from Johannesburg to Phalaborwa. Please note that Airlink plans to offer direct flights to Kruger National Park by March 2014.

If you’re on a tight budget or the buses happen to be on strike, there’s another alternative. You can take a direct taxi from Johannesburg to Namakgale, and then catch another taxi that will take you the remaining ten kilometers to Phalaborwa.

When it comes to accommodation in Phalaborwa, there are plenty of great options. Getaway has compiled a comprehensive list of places you can stay. During my visit, I chose to stay at Elephant Walk for four nights. They offer a variety of options, including backpacker accommodations and bed & breakfast options. Their kitchen is also top-notch, perfect for those who prefer to cook their own meals.

When you don’t have a vehicle to drive yourself, it’s still possible to have an up-close and personal experience with the animals.

Discovering the wildlife: entering the park

As someone who traveled alone without any means of transportation, I realized that my plans would be influenced by what other guests had already arranged. Upon arriving in Phalaborwa, I immediately reached out to the Kruger National Park office, as well as local lodges and tour operators. I was fortunate enough to explore the park with various groups of people. Here are a few options to consider:

I had an amazing experience at SANParks. They offer a variety of activities starting from Phalaborwa Gate. I decided to go on a morning drive, and it turned out to be an unforgettable adventure. We entered the park before the gates officially opened, giving us a unique opportunity to explore the wilderness in its tranquil state. Along the way, we stopped for a refreshing morning tea and enjoyed some delicious homemade rusks. The best part was encountering a herd of buffalo up close. It was awe-inspiring to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

I also had the pleasure of going on a half-day morning drive with Craig from EcoTrek. Let me tell you, it was worth every penny! We covered a huge area during our drive and had the privilege of witnessing a remarkable variety of animals. The highlight of the trip was our stop at Letaba Rest Camp for a scrumptious breakfast. Anyway, I contacted the super-friendly staff at Sefapane, and they were nice enough to arrange a pickup from where I was staying. We even got to go on a trip to Oliphants River Safaris! It was such a blast.

During our leisurely cruise down the Oliphants river, we saw so many incredible animals. There were hippos, giraffes, and even a thrilling encounter between a crocodile and a baby elephant. Can you believe it? It was like something out of a movie!
