Hiking the Fish River Canyon can be an exhilarating and challenging adventure. I recently had the opportunity to take on this incredible feat, and I want to share my experience and tips with you to help you prepare for and enjoy your own journey.
Let me start by saying that hiking the Fish River Canyon is not for the faint of heart. It requires physical stamina, mental fortitude, and a deep appreciation for the raw beauty of nature. But don’t let that discourage you! With proper preparation and the right mindset, you can conquer this magnificent wilderness.
The Fish River Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world, stretching nearly 100 miles through the rugged terrain of Namibia. It’s a place of dramatic landscapes, towering cliffs, and winding riverbeds. When you step into the canyon, you become a part of something bigger than yourself.
So, how do you survive hiking the Fish River Canyon? Here are my top tips:
1. Plan and Prepare
The first step is to plan and prepare for your expedition. Research the trail, understand the challenges you’ll face, and create a detailed itinerary. Pack the right gear, including a sturdy backpack, comfortable hiking boots, lightweight camping equipment, and plenty of food and water.
2. Train Your Body
Hiking the Fish River Canyon is physically demanding. You’ll be walking long distances, climbing steep hills, and navigating rocky terrain. Prioritize your fitness and train your body for the challenges ahead. Start a hiking regimen, build strength and endurance, and get used to carrying a heavy backpack.
3. Protect Your Feet
Your feet are your most valuable asset on a hike like this. Invest in quality hiking boots that fit well and provide ample support. Break them in before your trip to avoid blisters and discomfort. Bring extra socks and consider using blister prevention techniques, such as moleskin or specialized tape.
4. Hydrate and Stay Nourished
Proper hydration and nutrition are crucial for maintaining energy and stamina on the trail. Drink plenty of water and carry a water purification system to refill along the way. Pack lightweight, high-calorie foods that provide the nutrients your body needs. Don’t forget to pack snacks for quick bursts of energy.
5. Respect Nature
The Fish River Canyon is a pristine and fragile ecosystem. As you hike, be mindful of your impact on the environment. Leave no trace, follow established trails, and dispose of waste responsibly. Take the time to appreciate the flora and fauna around you, but refrain from disturbing or harming them.
6. Create Memories
Hiking the Fish River Canyon is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Take the time to savor the moments, the breathtaking views, and the sense of accomplishment. Capture memories through photographs or journal entries. Immerse yourself fully in the adventure and embrace the journey every step of the way.

By following these tips and embracing the challenges, you’ll be well-equipped to not just survive, but thrive in this remarkable natural wonder. I wish you all the best on your hiking expedition!
My friend Chris Davies and I took on the challenge of hiking the Fish River Canyon, a trail that stretches across 90 kilometers in Namibia. Let me share with you our experience and provide you with a guide to hiking this breathtaking landscape.
As I start the descent into the canyon, it’s hard not to feel a mix of fear and excitement. The stories I’ve heard about this place have stuck with me. People say they lose their toenails on the steep slopes and that bugs crawl into their ears at night. Rumor has it that you have to stuff your ears with cotton wool to keep them out.
As I mentioned these tales to my hiking buddies during our pre-hike planning session at the Devil’s Peak Brewery, the conversation took an entertaining turn. We were sitting there, surrounded by incomplete medical forms and the soulful sounds of a live musician, sharing our fears and expectations.
‘You know,’ I said to my friends, ‘apparently there are only two emergency exits in this canyon. And if something goes wrong, the only way out is by helicopter.’
Here’s the thing: none of us had a reliable source of information we could trust and compare with. We stumbled upon conflicting reports. Some said the hike was easy as pie, claiming you could practically breeze through it in a few days. On the other hand, there were warnings that only seasoned hikers with loads of experience should even consider attempting it.
After going back and forth several times, we finally decided to throw caution to the wind and see what awaited us.
The Fish River Canyon is enormous. I stood at the edge, adjusting my backpack, while a sign warned against day hikers. The crowd around me was held back. Feeling a sense of importance, I took my first steps towards the handrail. I didn’t know what to expect, but I felt a mix of excitement and anticipation.
The First Day: Going Down
It’s not as bad as I thought! It’s true that the slope is steep, and it took me some time to get used to the weight of my backpack. It took about an hour and a half to descend the canyon wall. We reached the bottom at around noon and got our first look at the Fish River. The water looked dirty and unappealing. After a quick lunch, we continued hiking and stopped for the night after walking 5km.
Tips for Survival
- Make sure to fill up all your water at the Hobas campsite before you start.
- If you’re leaving your vehicles at Ai-Ais (where the trail ends), you can arrange for a lift with the NWR park officials. They can take you from Ai-Ais to the start of the trail on the canyon edge – it costs R150 per person, with a minimum of R450 per trip. Alternatively, if you’re leaving a vehicle at Hobas, you’ll need to leave it at the campsite, which is about 10km away from the actual start of the trail. In our case, we left a vehicle at Hobas and drove everyone to the start. Then the driver went back to the camp and found a ride back to the canyon. Luckily, there’s a good amount of traffic along the access road, so it didn’t take long to find a lift.
- Whatever you do, don’t make the same mistake we did – don’t leave your Ai-Ais keys in your Hobas car.
- Don’t forget to bring some fancy food: This is the last opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal, so feel free to pack some luxurious food and beverages for the first night. Just keep in mind that any empty cans and garbage will need to be carried with you for the entire hike, or you can dispose of them by burning them in a fire along the way. Make sure to distribute the firewood among your group and bring it along for the descent, as there is a scarcity of wood along the trail on the first day.
- Remember to save some of your wine for the following nights and not drink it all on the first night.
Wow, check out Roehan blazing a trail on the way down! Look at that photo by Chris Davies.
As I slowly make my way down the path, I can’t help but feel a sense of awe. The surroundings are breathtaking, with nature’s beauty enveloping every step I take. The chirping of the birds, the rustling of the leaves, and the gentle breeze on my skin create a symphony of tranquility that brings me peace.
Being in nature has always been a source of solace for me. It is where I can truly disconnect from the busyness of life and find a sense of grounding. There is something magical about being surrounded by the elements, witnessing the intricate details of the world around me.
But it’s not just the beauty that draws me in. There is something deeper, something that stirs my soul and makes me feel a profound connection to the earth. It’s as if nature holds the key to a higher understanding, a wisdom that can only be found by immersing oneself in its embrace.
When I’m in nature, I feel a sense of belonging, as if I am part of something much bigger than myself. It reminds me that I am just a small piece of the puzzle, one tiny part of a vast and intricate web of life. It’s humbling, but also empowering.
There is a sense of wonder that comes with exploring the natural world. Every rock, every tree, and every animal has a story to tell. Each one holds its own secrets, its own lessons to teach. I am merely an observer, humbly learning from the wisdom that has been passed down through the ages.
In this modern world, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We are constantly bombarded with noise, distractions, and demands on our time. But when I step into nature, all of that falls away. I am left with a sense of clarity and a renewed perspective.
Being in nature is not just a luxury; it is a necessity. It is a reminder of the beauty that exists in this world, even amidst the chaos. It is a reminder to slow down, to take a deep breath, and to appreciate the wonders that surround us.
So, I encourage you to take a moment. Step outside. Breathe in the fresh air. Let nature’s embrace wash over you. Allow yourself to be captivated by the beauty and wisdom that awaits.
When I look back on our first campsite, just before we reached The Rapids, I can’t help but smile at the memories it holds. The photo by Chris Davies captures the excitement and anticipation we felt as we embarked on our adventure. It was the starting point of an incredible journey.
Day 2: Hot springs
I have to admit, Day 2 was tough. The terrain was challenging, with thick sand and loose rocks making each step a test of determination. We spent around 7 hours hiking, covering just 12km. It made me wonder if we had set too ambitious a goal – could we really complete the entire 90km in the 5 days and 4 nights we had planned?
I had the most incredible camping experience at Palm (Sulphur) Springs. It was definitely the highlight of our trip. The moment you arrive, you’re greeted by a faintly eggy aroma. But don’t worry, you quickly get used to it as the warm, soothing water works its magic on your tired muscles. This marvelous spring emerges from a tiny hole on the riverbank and gracefully flows down a narrow channel, joining the main river 30 meters away. Right when it emerges, it’s a scorching 65 degrees Celsius, definitely too hot for a dip. But as it gracefully mingles with the cooler river water, it becomes an oasis of tranquility. That night, we couldn’t resist the allure of the shallow, muddy rock pools that line the river’s edge. We just couldn’t help ourselves – we ended up lounging in our very own natural hot-tub, basking under the starry sky.
When I look back on our adventure, I can confidently say that the most valuable tool we brought with us was Chris’s water pump, which we affectionately named Pumpous Maximous. Let me tell you, drinking water straight from the murky river was not a pleasant experience. Especially near the springs, it was quite unappealing. However, once we ran the water through the pump, it tasted even better than the tap water at home. We were so relieved that we didn’t have to use those unpleasant chlorine tablets we had as a backup.
Survival tips
- If you’re using chlorine tablets or drops, try adding some flavor to your water. Game or a similar energy/rehydrating powder works wonders. Not only does it make the water taste better, but it also helps to prevent dehydration.
- Stay motivated by keeping an eye on your map. Although the photocopied map we received at the beginning was barely readable, we found another one that was much clearer. We also relied on an offline mapping app, which proved to be an invaluable addition.
- Hey there! Pay close attention to your footing as you embark on this section of the trail. The path ahead involves some tricky boulder hopping, and making a misstep could spell disaster for your hike. Even a small stumble could quickly turn into a major problem along the way. So, if your feet happen to get wet, take a moment to dry them off before you continue.
On the second day of the adventure, we encountered the most challenging terrain yet. It seemed intimidating at first, especially for someone like me who wasn’t an experienced climber. But to my surprise, it turned out to be quite manageable. The photo captured by Chris Davies perfectly showcases the breathtaking scenery we were surrounded by.
Hey there! Allow me to introduce you to Vidi, the scooter that completes the famous trio of Veni, Vidi, and Vici. Back in 1968, these three adventurous companions embarked on an exciting expedition through the canyon. If you’re curious to know more about this incredible journey, you can find additional details over here.
Now, let’s talk about Vidi. This remarkable scooter has undergone some changes recently. It has received a fresh coat of paint, transforming it into a zebra-inspired masterpiece with a combination of sleek black and white stripes. If you want to see more pictures and gather additional information, make sure to check out the comments section below. The photo featured here was captured by the talented photographer Teagan Cunniffe.
Hey there! Have you ever noticed how sometimes people leave their old shoes and clothes on a scooter as a way to show respect? It’s kind of a unique way to pay homage to something or someone. I find it fascinating how a simple object like a scooter can become a symbol for something bigger.
Hey there! I see you’re interested in boulders. Cool! Who doesn’t love these massive rock formations? I know I do. The way they stand tall and majestic is truly awe-inspiring. It’s incredible how something so solid and unyielding can capture our imagination and make us pause for a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature.
But let’s dig a little deeper, shall we? Boulders have more to offer than just their impressive appearance. They play an important role in the natural world, affecting the environment and shaping the landscape around them.
First off, boulders are known as one of the key elements in erosion control. They act as barriers, preventing soil and sediment from being washed away by rain or flowing water. This is crucial because erosion can lead to the loss of fertile soil, which is essential for plants to grow and thrive. So, boulders help to preserve the delicate balance of our ecosystems.
Another fascinating aspect of boulders is their ability to provide a habitat for various organisms. Just like you and I make our homes in houses, animals and plants find shelter and refuge among these giant rocks. In fact, some animals even rely on boulders for protection from predators or extreme weather conditions.
It’s not just living organisms that benefit from boulders; humans can also reap the rewards. Boulders can be used to create stunning landscaping features in gardens or parks, adding a touch of natural beauty to urban areas. They can also be used for recreational activities like rock climbing or as a backdrop for artistic installations.
So, the next time you come across a boulder, take a moment to marvel at its grandeur. Appreciate the role it plays in our environment and the life it supports. And if you’re feeling adventurous, why not try scaling one yourself? Just make sure to prioritize safety and have fun exploring the wonders of these magnificent rock formations!
If you decide to walk along the Fish River, it doesn’t matter which side you choose. You have the option to cut corners by sticking to the inside bank on wide bends. Just look at this photo by Chris Davies!
Wow, take a look at this epic photo I stumbled upon! It features Chris absolutely owning the stage while perched on top of a gigantic rock. The contrast of the harsh shadows adds an extra touch of drama to the shot. I have to say, our Capture Pro camera clip was a lifesaver on this adventure! Thanks to it, we were able to capture this incredible moment without a hitch. I have to give credit to the talented photographer, Teagan Cunniffe, for capturing this awe-inspiring image.
Wow, just look at that stunning photo of the sunset! It’s incredible how the oranges of the late afternoon sun set the canyon walls aflame. The colors are so vibrant and beautiful.
Hey there! Wanna hear about some crazy stuff that goes down at the Palm Springs after the sun starts to set? Check out this cool photo I found by Chris Davies. Looks pretty epic, right?
When I woke up on Day 3, I was greeted by the typical scenes of early-morning life at the campsite. It was a peaceful moment, captured and frozen by Teagan Cunniffe’s camera lens.
A Long Day Ahead
Day 3 promised to be a challenging one, with its fair share of trudging through thick sand and navigating treacherous rocks. But the silver lining was that it would gradually get easier as the day went on.
As we began our trek, we were surprised to encounter a group of hikers passing by — heading in the opposite direction. We recognized them from a few days ago when we were at Ai-Ais. They had proudly informed us then that they had completed the entire hike in just three days. It dawned on us that they must have hiked through the canyon, stopped at Ai-Ais, and then turned themselves around to walk back along the same canyon to Hobas. It was an act of madness that perplexed us and quickly became the main topic of conversation during what we knew would be our longest and most challenging day yet.
Our unofficial routine by this point was to start walking at around 9:30 AM, pause for a quick lunch at 1:30 PM, and finally set up camp at around 4:30 PM. This schedule allowed us some time to relax, swim, and just soak in the surrounding beauty.
Man, let me tell you, taking a lunch break around 13:30 today was a big mistake. We thought it would be nice to kick back and relax after hiking for a while, so we decided to take off our shoes and take a quick dip in the river. We even found some warm rocks to lay on and soak up the sun. But boy, were we in for a surprise.
After about an hour of chillin’ and relaxin’, our muscles were so stiff it felt like they were made of concrete. It was like our bodies just completely seized up. The rest of the day became a struggle, except for Ann, of course. She was bouncing along the trail with no problem, while the rest of us were cursing under our breath.
Let me tell you, this day has been a real doozy. We started day three of our hike having covered only 17km so far. By the time we set up camp for the night, we had made it just past the 40km mark. We were all pretty proud of ourselves, and we even gave each other a high-five to celebrate.
Here are some survival tips I’ve picked up:
- Instead of taking long lunch breaks, it’s better to have short snack breaks. That way, you can keep your energy up without getting too relaxed. And don’t forget to bring some food with you to munch on while you walk.
- Make sure you have all the essentials with you. I’m talking lots of water, sunscreen, and a hat to protect you from the sun.
- If you can, try wearing high-top boots. They’ll help keep the sand out of your socks and make your hike a lot more comfortable.
Start working on your random conversation skills, because all sorts of topics come up to pass the time.
In fact, you’d be surprised at how often a conversation takes an unexpected turn. Just when you think you’re talking about the latest movie, someone mentions a new diet they’re trying. And that’s when you find yourself talking about low-carb recipes and intermittent fasting.
That’s the beauty of random conversations – they can take you to places you never imagined. You might start talking about sports and end up discussing the history of ancient civilizations. Or you could begin chatting about your favorite hobbies and end up sharing stories about your travels around the world.
You never know what interesting nuggets of information you’ll stumble upon during a casual chat. It’s like taking a spontaneous journey without leaving your seat. And that’s what makes random conversations so exciting.
So, if you want to keep things interesting and discover new ideas, start practicing your random conversation skills. You’ll be amazed at how much you can learn and how many connections you can make along the way.
Remember, it’s the unexpected twists and turns that make conversations memorable. So embrace the randomness and be open to whatever topic may come your way. Who knows, you might just stumble upon something life-changing or find a new passion you never knew you had.
In the end, engaging in random conversations is a simple yet powerful way to expand your horizons and connect with others. So don’t shy away from the unknown, dive in and enjoy the adventure. You never know where it might lead you.

When I saw this photo of someone checking on blisters and refilling water bottles at lunchtime, I couldn’t help but wonder about the importance of taking care of yourself during physical activities. It got me thinking about how crucial it is to prioritize our well-being when we’re engaging in any kind of physical endeavor.
Now, on one hand, physical activities like hiking or running can be incredibly invigorating and rewarding. They allow us to connect with nature, challenge ourselves, and push our boundaries. But on the other hand, they can also be tough and demanding. The strain on our bodies can sometimes lead to blisters, exhaustion, or dehydration. And that’s where taking care of ourselves becomes crucial.
When you’re out there, pushing your limits, it’s vital to listen to your body and respond to its needs. Pay attention to any discomfort or pain you may be experiencing. Check if your shoes are rubbing against your feet, causing blisters to form. Take regular breaks to rest and replenish your energy. And most importantly, stay hydrated by drinking enough water.
By taking these simple steps, you can prevent minor discomforts from turning into major issues that could potentially ruin your experience. Remember, when it comes to physical activities, your well-being should always be a top priority.
So, the next time you embark on an adventure, whether it’s a hike, a run, or any other physical activity, make a promise to yourself: I will take care of myself. I will listen to my body. And I will ensure that my well-being comes first. With this mindset, you’ll be able to fully enjoy the experience and push your limits in a safe and responsible way.
And if you’re wondering, “How do I take care of myself during physical activities?” I have a few suggestions for you:
- Choose the right gear for your activity. Whether it’s a pair of well-fitting shoes or moisture-wicking clothing, having the right gear can make a world of difference in your comfort and performance.
- Understand the demands of your chosen activity. Different physical endeavors require different levels of endurance, strength, and agility. Make sure you’re prepared and have trained adequately before taking on any challenge.
- Don’t forget to warm up and cool down. Proper warm-up exercises can prepare your body for the physical demands ahead, while a cool-down routine can help your muscles recover and prevent injuries.
- Lastly, listen to your body. It knows best. If you’re feeling tired or in pain, don’t push yourself too hard. Rest when needed and seek medical attention if necessary. Your well-being should always take precedence over any goals or expectations.
So, remember: take care of yourself, listen to your body, and prioritize your well-being. In the end, it’s not just about reaching the summit or crossing the finish line; it’s about enjoying the journey and staying safe along the way.
When I think back to my experience of participating in a three-day race, it’s hard not to feel a sense of awe and wonder at the challenges I faced. The race was intense, and by the third day, I found myself lagging far behind the other competitors. It was a tough situation to be in, and it made me question my abilities and determination.
Looking at the photo taken of me during that moment, I can’t help but notice the exhaustion in my eyes. The strenuous effort and physical strain are evident in every line on my face. It serves as a reminder of the obstacles I encountered and the strength it took to keep going.
But as I reflect on that difficult period, I’ve realized that even though I may have been trailing behind, I was still in the race. And that, in itself, is an achievement. It’s easy to get caught up in comparing ourselves to others and feeling dejected when we fall short. But the truth is, progress looks different for everyone, and it’s not always about being the first to cross the finish line.
Throughout the race, I learned some valuable lessons about perseverance and resilience. I discovered the importance of focusing on my own journey and not getting too caught up in what others were doing. It’s okay to take things at my own pace and celebrate the small victories along the way.
That experience taught me that life is full of ups and downs, and it’s how we navigate through them that truly matters. It’s about finding the inner strength to keep going, even when things seem tough. And though I may not have been the fastest or the strongest during that race, I was there, pushing myself to the limit and giving it my all.
So, if you’re ever feeling discouraged or like you’re falling behind, remember this photo and the story behind it. It’s a reminder that progress is not always measured by how quickly you reach your goals but by the effort and determination you put into the journey. Keep pushing forward, embracing your own path, and celebrating each step you take. You’re capable of more than you know, and even when you feel like you’re lagging behind, you’re still in the race.
Wow, what a journey! I’m tired but proud to say that I made it to Dassie Ridge, our camping spot for tonight. After traveling for so long, we finally reached the 40km mark, and boy, did we give it our all to get here. The sight of this place fills me with a mix of relief and amazement.
Just imagine, we have used up every last bit of energy we had to make it this far. It was challenging, but the feeling of accomplishment is worth it. Looking back at all the miles we’ve covered, I can’t help but be grateful for the amazing adventure we are on.
This journey has truly tested my limits, both physically and mentally. It’s as if with each step I took, I discovered something new about myself. I never knew I had the strength to push myself so far. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished.
This camping spot is like a sanctuary after a long and grueling day. It’s quite surreal to think that just a few moments ago, I was struggling to find the strength to put one foot in front of the other. Now, I can finally rest and rejuvenate myself for the challenges that lie ahead.
As I look around, I can see the beauty of nature surrounding us. The trees, the mountains, and the distant horizon create a sense of peace and tranquility. It’s moments like these that remind me of how small we are in this vast world.
But even though we may be small, we are capable of achieving great things. This journey has taught me that perseverance and determination can take you to places you never thought possible. It’s about pushing through the difficult moments and savoring the sweet taste of victory.
So, here I am, at Dassie Ridge, feeling tired but proud. This journey has been a true test of my abilities, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I’m going to enjoy this moment of accomplishment and rest.
As I walk through the canyon, I can’t help but marvel at the sight before me. Jarryd is fearlessly navigating the rugged terrain, his determination evident in every step he takes. A seemingly endless expanse of small rocks stretches out before us, each one offering a unique challenge. The canyon floor is a mosaic of colors and textures, providing a mesmerizing backdrop to our adventure.
The experience is both thrilling and humbling at the same time. The immense power of nature is on full display here, reminding me of my own insignificance in the grand scheme of things. It’s a reminder to appreciate and respect the world around us, to take nothing for granted.
As I continue to follow Jarryd, I can’t help but be inspired by his unwavering determination. He navigates the treacherous terrain with grace and agility, his focus never wavering. It’s a testament to the human spirit and our ability to overcome obstacles, no matter how daunting they may appear.
As we make our way through the canyon, I can’t help but think about the parallels between this adventure and life itself. Just as Jarryd navigates the rocky terrain, we too must navigate the ups and downs that life throws our way. It’s not always smooth sailing, but it’s through these challenges that we grow and learn.
Walking through the canyon, I’m reminded of the importance of perseverance. It’s easy to give up when faced with adversity, but it’s in pushing through that we discover our true strength. The small rocks beneath my feet serve as a reminder that even the tiniest obstacles can be overcome with determination and a positive mindset.
As I reach the end of the canyon, I can’t help but feel a sense of accomplishment. The journey wasn’t easy, but it was definitely worth it. The breathtaking beauty of the landscape and the lessons I’ve learned along the way are priceless.
So, if you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed in life, I encourage you to take a page out of Jarryd’s book. Embrace the challenges, push through the obstacles, and never lose sight of the beauty that awaits you. Remember, it’s not about the destination, but rather the journey itself.
WHEW! Finally, I can take a break. I’ve reached my stop for the night at Dassie Ridge. Check out this amazing photo I took, snapped by Teagan Cunniffe!
Man, oh man, are we exhausted or what? I don’t know about you, but life can be one big whirlwind. Sometimes, it feels like we’re running on fumes, barely keeping our heads above water.
But let me tell you, my friend, we don’t have to stay stuck in that draining cycle. There’s a way out – a way to recharge our batteries and find renewed energy for the challenges that come our way.
So, listen up! I’m about to drop some knowledge on you about the importance of self-care. Self-care is all about tapping into what makes us feel revitalized and balanced. It’s about taking intentional steps to prioritize ourselves and our well-being, even when life gets hectic.
When we prioritize self-care, it’s like we’re tending to our own personal garden. We’re nurturing our minds, bodies, and spirits so that we can blossom, grow, and continue to thrive. And let me tell you – when we neglect self-care, it’s like that garden becomes overrun with weeds, strangling our joy and vitality.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – “But how on earth do I even begin to practice self-care?” Well, my friend, I’ve got you covered. Here are a few simple ideas to get you started:
- Unplug and recharge: Take a break from screens and spend some time engaging in activities that bring you joy. Whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, or playing with your pet, give yourself permission to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with yourself.
- Show yourself some love: Treat yourself to something that makes you feel good. It could be a hot bath, a massage, or even just taking the time to savor a piece of chocolate. Remember, you deserve to be pampered!
- Mindfulness matters: Take a moment to pause and be present. Pay attention to the sights, sounds, and sensations around you. Engage your senses and savor the small moments. Trust me, it’s amazing how much beauty we can find in the simplest of things.
- Get moving: Engage in some form of physical activity that you enjoy. Whether it’s dancing, playing a sport, or going for a run, find something that gets your heart pumping and brings you a sense of accomplishment.
Remember, my friend, self-care is not selfish. It’s a necessary ingredient for a happy and fulfilled life. So, take a moment for yourself today. Fill your cup and watch as your energy and zest for life come flooding back.
As I gaze up at the night sky, I’m mesmerized by the majestic mountains that surround me. In this vast bowl of nature’s beauty, I find a sense of peace and tranquility. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate the simplicity and wonder of the world.
Day 4: Speed boosters
Today, we embark on a challenging yet exhilarating adventure. The terrain is tough, with thick sand and loose rocks posing obstacles along our path. But I feel surprisingly invigorated and ready to conquer whatever lies ahead. Perhaps it’s because my backpack is considerably lighter, or maybe it’s the determination that fuels my every step, propelling me forward to the head of our hiking pack.
Day four presents us with a mostly level landscape, peppered with a few convenient shortcuts over low mountains. Our precise distance covered throughout the day remains a mystery, as these shortcuts allowed us to shave off substantial chunks of the total route. Nonetheless, we proudly pause our journey just beyond the 70km mark, making this our longest day so far at almost 30km. Yet, considering the time we spent hiking, we estimate that the actual ground covered was approximately the same as, if not slightly less than, day three – roughly around 23km.
I couldn’t believe how much the pace had picked up on the trail. The first two days were slow and filled with worries about not reaching our five-day goal, but now everything was moving so quickly. It was exhilarating! And along the way, we were treated to breathtaking views of the canyon floor.
Survival tips
- When you’re on the trail, be sure to keep a close eye on your map. The shortcuts are marked with white paint on prominent rocks, but it’s easy to miss them if you’re not paying attention.
- Don’t forget to pack painkillers, creams, and plasters for blisters and any other aches and pains that might come up.
- If you’re thinking about taking a shortcut, make sure you have plenty of water with you. The trail gets hotter as you climb higher, and after four days of hiking, those steep climbs can leave you feeling parched.
On this journey, you’ll come across a significant landmark. Keep an eye out for it as we make our way. We should arrive around noon on the fourth day. Not too far beyond that, we’ll find a beautiful spot where we can take a break and enjoy a quick lunch.
Wow, check out these breathtaking views! I’m walking down this shortcut back to the river, and let me tell you, the scenery is absolutely gorgeous. As I stroll along, I can’t help but feel captivated by the beauty of nature all around me.
The sparkling river flows gracefully, reflecting the vibrant hues of the sky above. The sun’s rays dance on the water’s surface, creating a dazzling spectacle that takes my breath away. It’s like stepping into a painting, where every stroke of color is perfectly placed.
As I continue my journey, I notice the lush greenery that surrounds me. The trees stand tall and proud, their branches reaching towards the heavens. They sway gently in the breeze, creating a soothing melody that is music to my ears.
The air is crisp and invigorating, filling my lungs with freshness. I take a moment to close my eyes and inhale deeply, allowing the earthy scent of the forest to envelop me. It’s as if nature is giving me a warm embrace, welcoming me into its embrace.
Every step I take reveals a new wonder. A bird chirping happily in the distance, a butterfly gracefully fluttering by, these small moments of serendipity remind me of the magic that exists in the world.
Walking in nature has a way of grounding me, of connecting me to something greater than myself. It’s a gentle reminder that amidst the chaos and noise of everyday life, there is still beauty to be found.
I urge you to take a moment to step outside, to lose yourself in the wonders of nature. Whether it’s a short walk by the river or a hike through the mountains, the rewards are immeasurable. So go on, embrace the beauty that surrounds you, and let nature work its magic.
Who doesn’t love a group photo? It captures a moment in time and brings people together. I can just imagine the excitement and laughter as everyone gathers around, ready to strike a pose. It’s a chance to show off your unique personality and be part of something bigger.
But have you ever stopped to think about the importance of group photos? They may seem simple on the surface, but they hold a deeper meaning. Group photos symbolize unity, connection, and the joy of shared experiences. They capture the bond between friends, family, and even colleagues.
When I look at a group photo, I see more than just faces. I see a story unfolding—a story of relationships, memories, and moments that will last a lifetime. Each person in the photo plays a role in that story, and together, they create something truly special.
Group photos can also serve as a reminder of the good times. Whenever I stumble upon an old group photo, a wave of nostalgia washes over me. I’m transported back to that moment, surrounded by people who made me smile. It’s like a snapshot of happiness that I can revisit whenever I need a little pick-me-up.
But it’s not just the sentimental value that makes group photos important. They also have the power to bring people together. When someone shares a group photo, it instantly becomes a conversation starter. Friends reminisce about the memories they made, and new connections are formed as people bond over shared experiences.
So, the next time you’re part of a group photo, remember the significance it holds. It’s not just a snapshot; it’s a window into a world of connection, unity, and joy. Hold on to those memories and cherish the people who are part of them. And if you find yourself smiling at a group photo, take a moment to appreciate the magic it captures.

Look at those clouds slowly drifting across the sky. It’s amazing how they transform the landscape, isn’t it? I see a concrete road that stretches across the river, a symbol of our human presence in this world.
Who would have thought that a simple little building could hold so much history and potential? Here stands a small structure, tucked away on the side of a trail, that builds intrigue and beckons the curious passersby.
The tuck-shop, as it’s affectionately known, has acted as a hub for refreshments, offering drinks to weary hikers and passerby for many years. It has witnessed the comings and goings of countless adventurers, offering a brief respite and a chance to refuel before continuing on their journeys.
Imagine stepping into this quaint little building, its walls adorned with memories of past hikers who have shared their stories. The well-worn counter stands as a testament to the countless cups that have been poured and the conversations that have taken place before it.
As I stand inside this humble structure, I can’t help but wonder about the tales it holds. What stories would it tell if it could speak? From families embarking on their first hike together to solo explorers seeking solace in nature, the tuck-shop has been an important part of their journeys.
But it’s not just about the history and stories contained within these four walls. The tuck-shop holds so much potential for the future as well. It has the power to become a gathering place for the community, a spot where new friendships are formed and old ones are rekindled.
Imagine a place where hikers can rest their weary legs, enjoy a cold drink, and swap tales of their adventures with fellow enthusiasts. With a little imagination and some careful planning, this small building could become a vibrant center of activity, a place that brings people together and fosters a sense of connection.
So, the next time you pass by a tuck-shop on the side of a trail, take a moment to pause and consider its potential. This unassuming building has seen so much and has the ability to become so much more. It’s a reminder that even the smallest structures can hold great meaning and offer incredible possibilities.
As the saying goes, “don’t judge a book by its cover.” In this case, don’t judge a tuck-shop by its modest appearance. Instead, let your imagination run wild and envision the endless possibilities that lie within. Who knows what amazing things could happen within those four walls?

As I gazed at the dark skies looming over Phil on the night before our fifth day, I felt a sense of foreboding. The journey was coming to an end, but there was still one final challenge that awaited us. It was time to drink all the beer.
The last stretch of the hike was relatively easier compared to the previous days. Although there were still sand and loose rocks to contend with, the trail was mostly flat and less demanding.
However, our hopes for an easy day were dampened by the rainy weather that greeted us in the morning. The rain wasn’t torrential, but the persistent drizzle was enough to soak through our backpacks. Those who had chosen to sleep under the open sky were particularly eager to start the day and get back on the trail.
As we walked, the thought of a hot shower and a delicious meal at Ai-Ais taunted us. The anticipation of reaching the finish line grew stronger with each step. The last section of the hike seemed never-ending, and at this point, we were all longing to put down our backpacks and savor a refreshing, ice-cold beer.
Here are some survival tips for the final stretch:
- Take a moment to appreciate this experience. Trust me, you’ll miss it when it’s over.
Let’s have some fun and spice up our visit to the Grand Canyon! Here are two exciting ideas to make our trip even more memorable:
1. Let’s play a guessing game to make the journey more exciting. Each of us will bet on the time we think we’ll arrive at the Grand Canyon. The person with the worst time-guessing skills (which is probably me, let’s be honest) will owe everyone a round of drinks! It’ll be a friendly competition that adds an extra element of fun to our adventure.
2. As we explore the Grand Canyon, take a moment to notice the increased activity of animals in the area. It’s a great opportunity to connect with nature and witness the beauty of wildlife up close. To leave a mark of our presence, let’s get creative and write our names on the canyon floor using small rocks. It’s a unique way to leave a temporary mark and make the experience even more personal.
By adding these two exciting activities to our itinerary, we’ll make unforgettable memories at the Grand Canyon. So, are you ready for an adventure of a lifetime? Let’s go!
Wow, can you believe it? We’ve made it to the 80km mark and boy, are we feeling it! Just take a look at this incredible photo of us – tired but absolutely thrilled. It’s a moment worth capturing, I tell you!
Finally! We’ve made it to Ai-Ais. Look at this photo taken by Teagan Cunniffe.
Hello, my 5th-grade readers! Allow me to share something fascinating with you. Picture this: a tall glass of icy, frothy beer. Doesn’t that sound refreshing? Well, believe it or not, this classic beverage holds a special quality that is hard to resist. It has the power to create a feeling of pure joy. Yes, my friends, I’m talking about elation – a sensation that beer brings like no other.
Now, I bet you’re wondering, what exactly is elation? Elation is more than just a simple emotion. It’s that feeling of pure bliss and excitement you get when something wonderful happens. It’s like a dose of happiness that surges through your body, making you feel like you’re on top of the world.
Imagine this scenario: you’ve had a long, tiring day at school. You come home feeling exhausted and worn-out. But then, you see a cold, frosty mug of your favorite beverage waiting for you. As you take that first sip, you can feel an incredible sense of relief and satisfaction wash over you. Suddenly, all your troubles seem to melt away, and you’re left with nothing but sheer happiness.
So, my young friends, you may be wondering how exactly beer is linked to elation. Well, let me explain. Beer contains a substance called alcohol, which is known to have a relaxing effect on the mind and body. When you consume beer, this alcohol interacts with certain chemicals in your brain, triggering the release of endorphins – those wonderful little chemicals that make you feel happy. It’s like a natural mood booster that can instantly lift your spirits.
However, it’s important to remember that elation, like beer itself, can be a double-edged sword. While a little bit of elation can be a delightful experience, too much of it can lead to negative consequences. It’s all about finding the right balance and enjoying beer responsibly.
Now, my inquisitive readers, let me ask you a question: have you ever noticed how a sip of beer can change your mood? Maybe, just like me, you’ve experienced that moment of elation when indulging in this frothy beverage. It’s a truly unique feeling that we can all appreciate and enjoy.
In conclusion, my young friends, when it comes to beer, remember that it’s not just a drink. It’s a source of elation – a way to elevate your spirits and celebrate life’s little moments. So, if you’re ever in need of a pick-me-up, why not take a sip of cold beer and let the joy wash over you? Cheers to that!
P.S. If you’ve enjoyed this piece, then you’ll love my upcoming stories about the wonders of the world around us. Stay tuned!
Hey there! Check out this last group photo I stumbled upon. A really nice person passing by was kind enough to snap it for us.
As I journey to retrieve our cars from Hobas, I can’t help but reflect on the adventure we’ve had. The transfers from Ai-Ais to Hobas are quite affordable, at a rate of R150 per person, with a minimum rate of R450 for each way.
Let me tell you why
When you’re finished, you’ll find yourself yearning for those magnificent canyon walls. Life becomes a simple combination of walking, eating, laughing, and boulder-hopping. As night falls, the canyon embraces you with its dark embrace, and you drift off to sleep under a sky adorned with countless stars. For those of you who enjoy outdoor exercise and camping, this is an experience that will leave an indelible mark on your memory.
Fitness level: This adventure requires a moderate fitness level. Endurance is crucial, as you’ll face long days of walking and a few short but steep climbs.
Experience needed: Minimal experience is required, but you must be agile on your feet for all the boulder-hopping that awaits.
Difficulty: The hike to Fish River Canyon was a bit easier than the challenging Otter trail, but the long days can still be exhausting. If you’re feeling unsure, plan for a six-day trip.
Paperwork: You’ll need to fill out a medical clearance form and have it signed by a doctor. You can download the form here. You’ll also need to complete a conservation declaration. Make sure to bring both forms with you to the office in Hobas before starting your hike. (These forms were accurate as of August 2015).
Map: It’s a good idea to print out a route map before you go, as the office often runs out of copies. You can download a map here.
Food and drink
Having a water filter pump is incredibly helpful. If you don’t have one, be sure to bring water purification tablets. If you plan on bringing alcohol, transfer it to plastic bottles before you start your hike. As for meals, here’s what we brought:
Breakfast: For breakfast, you have a couple of options. You can go for the Oat-So Easy, an easy-to-prepare oatmeal breakfast, or you can try our own pre-mixed cereal.
Lunch: When it comes to lunch, you’ll want something that is easy to carry and provides the energy you need. Some options include Provitas, Laughing Cow cheese, biltong, snack bars, dried fruit and nuts, salami, and tuna packets. Don’t forget to pack some sweets and additional snack bars for an energy boost on the trail.
Dinner: At dinner time, you have a few different options. Back Country Cuisine freeze-dried meals, which you can find at various outdoor stores, are a popular choice. While they can be a bit pricey, they are worth it. Some of our favorites are the Chicken Tikka Masala, Moroccan Lamb, and Roast Chicken and Mash. Each serving is enough for one person with a big appetite or two people with smaller appetites. If you need to fill in any gaps, you can always bring along some two-minute noodles and extra sauce sachets. And don’t forget to pack some powdered soups, just in case you’re still hungry. For more ideas, you can check out the Getaway taste-tests of popular lightweight hiking meals.
Sleeping
When it comes to sleeping arrangements on a hiking trip, there are a few options to consider. You can choose to sleep out in the open, with just a groundsheet for protection from rain. Alternatively, you can opt for a lightweight tent. In my experience, those who slept in tents reported getting a better night’s sleep. This is especially true when the wind picks up at night, as it can be quite unpleasant to wake up with sand in your face. If you decide to bring a tent, you may want to leave the fly-sheet behind to reduce weight. No matter what, it’s important to have a super-warm sleeping bag and thermals to stay comfortable.
Choosing the right time to go
If you’re planning a hiking trip to see the night sky at its best, it’s recommended to book your trip during the new moon phase. This is when the night sky is most beautifully displayed. Keep in mind that this trail is quite popular, so it’s advisable to book at least a year in advance to secure your spot. The trail is only open from 1 May to 15 September, which are the drier months of the year. Keep in mind that the trail tends to be busiest during the South African and Namibian school holidays. Although there may be some light drizzle, heavy rain is not common during winter months.
Hey there! Did you know that only a maximum of 30 people are allowed to start the trail on the same day? Pretty cool, right? But here’s the thing, you can only book for three or more people. So, if you’re thinking of going solo or with just one buddy, unfortunately, you won’t be able to join in.
Let’s talk money
Now, let’s get down to business. The hike itself will cost you R300 per person. And here’s the deal, you’ll need to secure your spot by paying a 10% deposit. Keep in mind, though, that this price is for the year 2016. It might have gone up this year. By the way, in case you’re curious, last year it was R275 per person.
Once you’re at Hobas, you gotta shell out some extra cash. There are park entry fees, depending on where you’re from. If you’re a Namibian citizen, it’ll cost you R30. If you’re from a SADC country, it’s R60. And if you’re an international citizen, you’ll be looking at an R80 fee. Oh, and if you’re driving your own vehicle to get to the trail’s start, it’s gonna be an extra R10 per vehicle.
Here’s a little tip for you. It’s a good idea to camp out at either Hobas or Ai-Ais before and after the hike. Trust me, it adds to the whole experience. And guess what? There’s a shuttle that takes you from Ai-Ais to Hobas. It’ll set you back R150 per person, but the minimum charge is R450 per trip. Just something to keep in mind.
Oh, and on a totally unrelated note, if you wanna take a dip in the hot springs at Ai-Ais afterwards, it’s gonna cost you an extra R10 per person. Not a bad deal for a lovely soak, am I right?
All prices are correct as of August 2015. Please check with Namibia Wildlife Resorts for the most up-to-date fees when you make your reservation.
