How to Have an Amazing Day in Durban
If you’re wondering what to do in Durban, don’t worry, there’s plenty of fun to be had. People often underestimate the charm of this city, but let me tell you, Durban has soul. So, let me share my suggestions for a perfect day in Durban.

My earliest memory of Durban takes me back to when I was four years old. I would stand with my twin sister, Nandi, on the balcony above the garage, gazing down at the tiny patch of grass. It always struggled to grow, looking a bit sad. I couldn’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment because I could never truly run wild on it. Nandi and I, along with the neighborhood kids, who were always fascinated by us city kids from eGoli, the City of Gold, with our funny accents and even stranger Zulu language, would find ourselves on the concrete slab below, dancing away. With just a few words in English, we would amaze them and leave them speechless. We would hold onto the steel railing, with its beautifully curved patterns resembling a flower, fully aware that the chances of falling were slim but still present. The view from the railing was simply magical. The townships in Durban were like scenes from a movie: lush, green, and filled with rolling hills and tropical valleys that seemed to stretch on forever.
It was 1990, and I remember vividly the day Nelson Mandela was freed from prison. The air was filled with joyous chants and lively conversations as we celebrated on the streets of Soweto. The memory is so clear in my mind, but I sometimes wonder if it’s my own or if it’s been shaped by my mother’s countless retellings over the years. Either way, I can still feel the immense sense of freedom and happiness that filled the air that day, surpassing anything I had ever experienced before.
Imagine standing at the edge of breezy Umhlanga Village, gazing out at the majestic lighthouse.
Now, 20 years later, my experience of Durban has completely transformed – I feel confident and empowered. It must have been my hundredth visit to the province, as I’ve been coming here multiple times every year since I was a baby. But this time, it was different. I was on an assignment to review accommodations and conduct interviews – but deep down, I had a bigger aspiration: to fall head over heels for this city that’s renowned for having the busiest port in Africa.
I could sense the province’s history and pride in the air, carried on the shoulders of its people. They celebrated their strong identity with vibrant saris adorned with gold, proudly worn by the women. The Zulu men, on the other hand, sported sandals made from cowhide and old tires, showcasing a true African spirit. The amalgamation of Zulus, Indians, and other diverse ethnic groups created a beautiful tapestry that embodied the essence of Durban.

Durban is known for its year-round warmth, making winters there quite amusing. The cost of food and lodging is reasonable, and it’s conveniently located just six hours from Johannesburg or a short two-hour flight from Cape Town. But what sets Durban apart is its people. They’re not just nice in a polite, obligatory way – they’re genuinely friendly and welcoming, which adds to the city’s charm.
There are plenty of activities to keep you entertained in Durban, and the October 2014 issue of MzansiBride has all the details (check out pages 29 and 58). Here are some suggestions of things to do that I think you’ll enjoy.
Things to do in Durban
1. Start your day off right

Imagine waking up to a delightful breakfast and a mesmerizing view at Churchill House in Morningside. The coffee is simply blissful, and the croissants are absolutely scrumptious. What’s even better is that the owners treat you like an old friend, making your morning all the more special. Isn’t that a wonderful way to start your day?
2. Indulge in a Sweet Delight by the Beach
Escape to a playful paradise at Wakaberry and treat yourself to a mouthwatering dessert. It’s the perfect place to satisfy your sweet tooth. Just imagine the joy of indulging in delicious frozen yogurt and enjoying the beach vibes. It’s a treat you’ll surely love.
The humid subtropical climate can really get to you, so why not head to the beach? The beach in Umhlanga is nice and peaceful, especially in the morning. If you’re like me and think that ice cream is appropriate any time of day, then I recommend stopping by Wakaberry for a sweet treat. Take a leisurely stroll along the promenade, enjoying your ice cream as you go.
3. Need some relaxation?
If you’re looking for peace and tranquility, I suggest visiting the Valley of 1000 Hills or the Durban Botanical Gardens. Both of these places offer a sense of calm that only nature can provide. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy a nice meal surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers. The Valley of 1000 Hills is a must-see attraction and is considered one of the most beautiful places in the entire country. Gcina Mhlophe even wrote about its beauty in a magazine. And if you’re interested in spending the night, there are plenty of accommodation options in the Stay in 1000 Hills network.
4. Explore the culture
Hey there! I just want to share with you some amazing places in Durban that I absolutely love. One of my favorites is the African Art Centre. It’s not just an ordinary shop, it actually offers employment opportunities to those who need it the most. Plus, you can find some incredible handmade collectibles that make perfect gifts.
Another place that I highly recommend is the Phansi Museum. The name “Phansi” means “below” in isiZulu, and it’s a tribute to African craftsmanship. This museum is like a treasure trove of the most extraordinary arts and crafts you can imagine.
