The Amatola Hiking Trail is absolutely stunning and incredibly challenging. This six-day, five-night trek takes you through the awe-inspiring Amatola Mountains in the Eastern Cape. It begins at Maden Dam, near King Williams Town, and concludes in the enchanting village of Hogsback.
I actually conquered the Amatola Hiking Trail myself last year, so I have some valuable tips to help you tackle this demanding hike in South Africa.
So, let me tell you about this amazing trail that has become legendary in South Africa. People often talk about it as one of the toughest and most beautiful hiking experiences in the country. The stories you hear about the trail are absolutely true.
I have to tell you, the Amatola Hiking trail was absolutely unforgettable for me and a few close friends and family members. It ranks among the most amazing adventures we’ve ever experienced. This hike is everything people say it is, like a scene out of a storybook. The forests are truly magical, the air is so clean, and the rivers and waterfalls are filled with the purest water you can imagine. But let me tell you, this hike is no walk in the park. It’s tough as nails. There are only a few kilometers where you’re not either going up or going down. And even on those rare stretches, the terrain is far from easy. You’ll have to be really careful navigating tree roots, uneven paths, rocks, and thick underbrush.
Let me start by saying that none of us on the team were really fit. We had never taken on a hike like this before, and it was definitely the longest one my wife and I had ever attempted.
So how did we manage to finish? It all came down to careful preparation
For us, this meant spending as much time as we could hiking shorter trails around Johannesburg with our backpacks loaded up with food and bricks (yes, actual bricks!). We wanted to replicate the weight of the roughly 10-12 kilograms we would have to carry on the Amatola hike.
The 11-kilometer hike at Hennops was a great way to get started, and the 13-kilometer option at Rustig in the Magaliesburg gave us a taste of the kind of uphill and downhill stretches we would encounter on the Amatola trail.
During our preparatory hikes, my friend and I got a clear understanding of our physical and mental abilities. We also learned how to modify and personalize our backpacks to suit our needs. These practice hikes revealed potential challenges that we might face on the Amatola Hiking Trail. One issue we discovered was that we both developed blisters in unusual spots on our toes. The roads leading into the Eastern Cape are well-maintained and easy to navigate, so you shouldn’t encounter any obstacles along the way. To ensure you have ample time for debriefing, a satisfying dinner, and a good night’s rest, aim to arrive at Away with the Fairies in Hogsback no later than 17:00. During the debriefing, pay close attention and don’t hesitate to ask any questions that come to mind. Before turning in for the night, gather your team and go over the information together, ensuring everyone is on the same page. This is also a good opportunity to jot down any unanswered questions you may have, so you can ask your guide the next morning before setting off. Remember, you can never be too prepared for the journey that lies ahead.
Day-to-day Explorations on the Amatola Trail
When you’re embarking on a hike, it’s crucial to start your day early. I recommend waking up at 5:00 a.m. This will give you enough time to eat a hearty breakfast, make any final preparations, and get your gear ready. Take a few moments to walk around with your backpack on to get used to the weight. Make any necessary adjustments and be ready to leave by 7:00 a.m. when the shuttle arrives to take you to Maden Dam, where your hike begins.
The first day of the hike takes place in a beautiful forest. It’s mostly an easy climb, with a gradual incline. However, the last three to five kilometers are a bit steeper. Once you reach the hut, it’s important to start the fires for cooking and heating water as soon as possible. This will ensure you have a warm meal and hot drinks. After a long day of hiking, it’s best to go to bed early and get a good night’s sleep.
To make the most of the rest of your days on the hike, it’s essential to continue following these practices. Wake up early and start hiking as soon as possible. As soon as you reach the camp, get your fires going to provide warmth and cook your meals. And don’t forget to go to bed early to give your body enough rest for the next day.
Hey there! Let me tell you about day three of the adventure from Dontsa to Cata hut. Now, if you’re not super athletic, I recommend taking the longer route, which is about 18 kilometers. It might not be as scenic as the other trails, but it’s definitely the safest and easiest one. The shortest route involves going up a waterfall, and unless you’re as tough as Iron Man, it’ll drain you of the energy you need for the rest of the journey. Plus, if you take the longer route and make good time, you can still visit the waterfall and admire it without having to climb it.
Oh, and don’t forget to swim whenever you get the chance! It’s a great way to cool off and relax.
Another tip for a successful hike is to agree on a specific time for lunch with your group. This gives everyone a chance to rest and recharge mentally and physically. Trust me, we made the mistake of not doing this once, and it made the day much tougher.

Every tiny bit matters
When you embark on this adventure, you won’t have the luxury of slackpacking. That means you’ll need to carry everything you need for six days on your back. But don’t worry, I’ve got some tips to help you lighten your load.
First things first, if you have the option to decant something, go for it. Pour liquids into smaller containers and transfer bulky items into lightweight alternatives. Every little bit helps when it comes to saving weight.
Another trick is to replace heavy metal items with lighter alternatives. For example, swap out that metal cup for a plastic one or switch to a titanium spork instead of a full set of cutlery. These small swaps can add up and make a big difference in the weight you’re carrying.
Ziplock bags are going to be your new best friend. They’re incredibly versatile and can be used to store all sorts of things. Use them to keep your snacks, trail mix, and other smaller items organized and easily accessible. You can even use them to separate your food rations for each day, distributing the weight evenly throughout your pack.
Now, let’s talk about sleeping arrangements. You won’t need to bring a tent; the trail has huts with mattresses at the end of each day. So all you need is a lightweight sleeping bag to keep you cozy at night.
Tip: Here’s a pro tip for you – pack your trail mix and snacks into individual Ziplock bags before you start your hike. This way, you’ll have easy access to your snacks throughout the day, and it’ll help distribute the weight more evenly in your pack.
Meal prep is essential
When it comes to planning your meals for hiking, it’s important to consider the ratio of weight to energy. I’ve learned that rice, especially white rice, may seem light, but it takes a long time to prepare and isn’t as filling as couscous. So, if you’re looking for a meal that will keep you satisfied without weighing you down, couscous is a great option.
If possible, I recommend making every hiking dinner at home first. This way, you can figure out the minimum amount of ingredients you’ll need. Trust me, not having to carry unnecessary items, like an extra 150g of something, can make a bigger difference than you might think.
When it comes to breakfast, I find that oats are the way to go. They’re a reliable choice and you can pair them with fruit every day. If you’re looking for fruits that will last longer, apples and pears are the best options. But we also managed to enjoy strawberries with our oats on a couple of mornings. We sliced up a punnet of strawberries and put them in a Ziploc bag with a bit of water and sugar. They may have gotten a little mushy, but they still tasted delicious and added a delightful burst of sweetness and energy to our breakfast.
On days when we knew we would arrive at our campsite late, we made sure to pre-slice our ingredients and pack them in Ziploc bags. We found that oil and salt helped preserve the freshness of most foods. But the real game-changer for us was peppers. They’re lightweight, sturdy (lasting up to 6 days in your backpack), and can be used as a crunchy addition or an extra filling in cooked meals.

Now, you might be wondering why we suggest carrying a small, lightweight axe when our goal is to shed weight. It may seem counterintuitive, but there’s always someone in the group who’s strong and adventurous enough to carry it. Surprisingly, it proved to be incredibly useful. Although all the huts provide wood, not all of it is suitable for burning, and not all huts have axes (which are often found in the same huts).
If you decide to bring a hammock, don’t forget to bring plenty of string or rope to secure it. Just like a hitchhiker needs a towel, a hiker should always have some rope on hand. The possibilities for using it are endless, so it’s essential to have it with you.
