Additionally, the museum sheds light on the thriving Muslim community that blossomed in the area after the Cape was granted freedom of religion in 1804 by the Batavian government.

An interesting fact about the Bo-Kaap is that it boasts South Africa’s oldest mosque, called the Auwal Mosque. This sacred place was built on the land once owned by a freed slave named Coridon van Ceylon. It’s a testament to the deep roots and historical significance of the community.

This week also coincides with the in_herit FESTIVAL 2019, an exciting cultural program offered by Iziko Museums. When it comes to admission costs, they are quite affordable. It’s priced at R20 for adults, R10 for children between 6 and 17 years old, and just R5 for children aged 0 to 5 years. Pensioners and students can enjoy discounted entry for just R10, and on Fridays, entry is free for students. In addition, there are certain commemorative days when entry is entirely free.

This museum, which was established in 1994, the same year South Africa had its first free and fair election, takes us back in time to reflect on the painful removals and demolitions that a vibrant community endured during the apartheid era. The museum’s impact on the struggle for land and the process of healing and restoration has been so tremendous that it was even declared a National Heritage Site in 2006. I am fascinated by the story of this memorial, which sits on the very ground where executed slaves were discovered in 2003. It’s a solemn tribute to the countless victims of slavery, whose identities may forever remain a mystery. Without permission to research the remains, we can only wonder who these individuals were and if they have any living descendants. Yet, their memory lives on at this site.

The memorial encompasses an ossuary, where the recovered remains are carefully preserved. It also features a beautiful memorial garden and a collection of exhibitions dedicated to the legacy of slavery and apartheid. It serves not just as a place of remembrance, but also as an educational and community hub, bringing people together.

If you’d like to pay your respects, the memorial is open from Monday to Sunday, between 7am and 5pm. Admission is free, making it accessible to all.
