When you step onto the premises, the sound of machinery guides you into a bustling warehouse where soft fleece is transformed into textile fiber. The original farmstead dates back to 1715. Today, it’s home to around 250 Cape alpacas, which were originally brought from Chile and settled on the farm between 2009 and 2011. These fascinating creatures add so much charm to our countryside.

The animals are divided into groups based on their gender and age, and they each have unique personalities. They belong to the Camelidae family, alongside camels and llamas.

Welcome to Welbedacht Wines, owned by the incredible Schalk Burger Senior, a true legend in the world of rugby. But did you know that Schalk is actually a cricket enthusiast at heart? That’s right, he chose rugby to make his father happy, but his real passion lies in cricket. In fact, he loves the sport so much that he built and maintains his very own cricket pitch right here on the estate – the Welbedacht Cricket Oval.

When you visit Welbedacht Wines, you might just bump into Schalk himself. You’ll find him strolling through the vineyards, chatting with guests in the tasting room, or playing with his dogs. And don’t forget to say hello to his wife, Myra, who runs the beautiful Bradgate Manor House guesthouse.

Welbedacht Wines is a true family affair. Schalk and Myra’s daughter, Rene, proudly represents the estate as a brand ambassador in Johannesburg. Meanwhile, their son, Tiaan, has followed in his father’s footsteps and is now the head of viniculture and viticulture after completing his studies in Agriculture. He started as an assistant winemaker and has worked his way up. Quite an achievement!
