Every time I fly into Cape Town, it’s an absolute thrill! It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve done it before, the excitement never fades. Luckily, there are plenty of airlines that can get me there without breaking the bank. I usually budget about an hour at the airport before my flight, followed by a flight time of around an hour and three quarters. And once I land, it’s just a quick trip into the city, making sure I arrive within my self-imposed time limit.

So, let me tell you about the wide array of places to stay in Cape Town. They are all so unique and interesting! I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Gorgeous George Hotel, which is housed in the old United Building Society building on St Georges Mall. It was such a cool experience! I highly recommend it if you’re looking for something a little different.
The Gorgeous George Hotel is actually part of the Design Hotels programme, which is a big deal. It means that the hotel is recognized internationally for its amazing design and style. So you know you’re in for a treat when you stay there.

The owner and chef, Judi Fourie, has devoted fifteen years to perfecting her unique vision. Her concept removes the need for waiters and eliminates any barriers between you and the culinary experts preparing your meal. There are no doors, no windows, no walls—just an open and inviting space. And to top it all off, she believes in treating her staff equally, which means there’s no need for tipping.
When I first heard the name of the restaurant, Pilcrow & Cleaver, it immediately intrigued me. Chef Judi explained that the name represents her vision for the establishment. The pilcrow symbol, which looks like this: ¶, is used to mark a new paragraph. On the other hand, the cleaver is the largest knife in a chef’s toolkit. By combining these two symbols, the restaurant symbolizes a fresh start and the boldness to explore new horizons.
Pilcrow & Cleaver is not your typical restaurant. It’s a place where everyone is welcome and encouraged to interact with the chef. The menu is inspired by European cuisine but incorporates the vibrant flavors of South Africa. If you prefer a lighter meal, they also have a two-course lunch menu available.

When I dined from menu 107, I couldn’t help but wonder about the incredible effort it must take to create a completely new menu every single week. It was fascinating to watch chef Judi prepare my meal right in front of me, all while enjoying the relaxed and unique atmosphere. The menu options are primarily influenced by her travels, where she seeks out uncommon flavors to combine with South African flair. Judi proudly declared, ‘Cooking is like an art form, and the kitchen is my canvas!’ as she presented me with a beautifully cooked grilled springbok loin, seasoned with Malay spices and served alongside a delightful mix of wilted spinach and apricot puree.
My night of pleasure also included a tempting prawn, chili, and lemon ravioli in a bouillabaisse sauce, playfully called “love letters” on the menu, and a sea bass fillet coated in almond. As a dedicated cheese lover, I concluded my culinary adventure with ash goat’s cheese, ripe figs, tangy lemon marmalade, and crisp seeded crackers. Chef Judi skillfully matched each dish with a local wine selection, and my personal favorite of the night was The Valley Pinot Noir Rosé from the Elgin Valley.
As I strolled back to the Gorgeous George hotel, I couldn’t resist stopping by their rooftop bar for a nightcap.

This is the place where Cape Town comes alive, and it’s the perfect spot to end your adventure. The rooftop has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, like a living room. It’s a lush oasis by the poolside that tempts you to stay for a drink or even linger a little longer for breakfast. With its elevated view of the vibrant city below, I couldn’t help but have more than one drink before retreating to my suite.
You can enjoy breakfast at the Gigi Rooftop, and they also serve lunch and drinks throughout the day.
All in all, it was an exhilarating weekend, living like a local in the heart of Cape Town and dining at one of its trendy hotspots. It was just what I, as a person from Johannesburg, needed. It was the perfect way to spend a weekend, don’t you think?
