I went to Calvinia’s Hantam Vleisfees after it took a break for two years, and let me tell you, it was absolutely amazing! The event was held in the high Karoo, and it was something that I’ll never forget. The atmosphere was electric, and there was so much to see and do.

That’s why the Hantam Vleisfees, the ultimate Boerboel festival, was a huge hit in Calvinia this weekend. Four thousand people came together to soak up the late summer sun, eat loads of meat, and have a blast.

The party at the show grounds started bright and early, and you could spot it from miles away. The smell of sizzling meat wafted through the Hantam, reaching a good 10 kilometers outside of town. In the streets, people without a proper setup threw together impromptu grill stations, serving up mouth-watering ribs, big smiles, and delicious vetkoek. Inside the festival grounds, the local folk dancers rocked their routine on the grass, beer flowed freely at the tent, and the sound of English quickly disappeared as pint after pint was poured.

As I reflect on the memorable experiences at the Calvinia Vleisfees, I can’t help but feel a sense of joy and excitement. The event was filled with entertaining activities, delicious food, and the camaraderie of fellow attendees. From sheep dog demonstrations to “all the meat you can eat” competitions, there was never a dull moment.

One of the highlights was witnessing the awe-inspiring act of Christo and Cobus on the Sementblad. Their acrobatic skills and daring stunts left me in amazement. And let’s not forget the intense crotch games that had everyone on the edge of their seats.

The Vleisfees strongman competition was a sight to behold. It showcased the sheer strength and determination of the participants. Classic cars were on display, adding a touch of nostalgia to the event. The platteland community came together, bringing a sense of happiness and unity to the festivities.

But amidst all the revelry, there was something missing. Where were the Boerboel broek aficionados? It’s moments like these that remind us of life’s unpredictable nature.
