In each edition, I take you on a journey to explore one of these hidden gems, unraveling its mysteries and uncovering its unique charm. Join me as we embark on a quest for inspiration and embark on unforgettable adventures across South Africa.
Unveiling the Magic of Betty’s Bay
If you want to know why Betty’s Bay is the perfect holiday destination, just take a leisurely stroll. You’ll find the answer with a comfortable pair of shoes.
Moving along the coastal path near Jock’s Bay, you’ll discover a series of charming, secluded coves. However, the local boat club has been facing a serious problem with trespassers on their slipway.
In Montagu, if you stand at the intersection of Long and Church Streets, you’ll be treated to a unique sight. The village showcases four different styles of architecture, each contributing to its picturesque charm. Just be careful as you explore – Long Street is also the busy R62, with cars rushing by on their way to and from Oudtshoorn.
Citrusdal
You can find delicious locally grown oranges for sale all over the place in Citrusdal. It’s a beautiful little farming town that has recently started embracing tourism, and let me tell you, it’s been a game-changer. There’s so much to see and do here!
One of the must-visit spots is Elands Bay. Trust me, you won’t want to miss it. The coastal town is famous for its stunning scenery and fantastic surfing opportunities. If you’re a nature lover or an adrenaline junkie, this is the place for you.
In the southern part of Elands Bay, you’ll find a collection of privately owned houses lining the partially tarred roads that wind their way down to the beach. Take a look at this photo by Adriaan Louw.
When you first arrive in Elands Bay, it might seem like there’s not much to do besides surfing and indulging in some delicious crayfish. But if you take a closer look, you’ll notice something special – families coming back year after year to set up camp right on the beachfront. It’s clear that the allure of this quiet coastal town lies in the art of doing very little.
Glentana
When you step into the sea at Glentana, you’re immediately greeted by its inviting warmth. However, beneath the surface, there is a hidden danger. The rip currents here are fierce and powerful, posing a real threat to swimmers like myself. And if that weren’t enough to make you hesitate, the possibility of encountering sharks adds an extra level of uncertainty to your beach experience.
Swimming at Glentana is definitely an adventure. You have to be willing to take risks and accept the responsibility for your own safety. Unlike many other beaches, Glentana doesn’t have lifeguards on duty throughout the year. They are only present during the peak season when the beach is most crowded. So, if you’re planning a visit outside of that time, be aware that you’ll be swimming at your own risk.
But despite these risks, Glentana remains a popular choice for locals from George and Oudtshoorn. And after spending some time here myself, I understand why.
Groot Marico
Welcome to the enchanting world of the Marico. Just take a look at this breathtaking photo by Teagan Cunniffe – it’s simply magical!
Now, let me tell you about a little town called Groot Marico. It may be small, but it’s full of surprises. You may have heard of Oom Schalk Lourens, who put Groot Marico on the map with his fascinating stories and strong mampoer. But there’s so much more to discover here.
Let’s start with Hermanus, a beautiful place in Groot Marico. Nestled in nature’s embrace, this gem will leave you in awe. Whether you’re a nature lover or an adventure seeker, Hermanus has something special for everyone. From scenic hikes to thrilling bike trails, you’ll find endless opportunities to explore and connect with the natural world.
But Groot Marico has more to offer than just stunning landscapes. This place is steeped in history and culture. Take a walk through the town, and you’ll come across charming old buildings and friendly locals who are always ready to share their stories. It’s like stepping back in time and experiencing the rich heritage of this extraordinary place.
And let’s not forget about the delicious food! Groot Marico is known for its mouthwatering cuisine. Whether you’re craving traditional South African dishes or international flavors, you’ll find it all here. Don’t miss the chance to taste some of the local delicacies – they’re simply irresistible!
So, if you’re looking for a unique destination that offers a mix of natural beauty, fascinating history, and delectable food, look no further than Groot Marico. This hidden gem will captivate your heart and leave you with lifelong memories. Come and discover the magic for yourself – you won’t be disappointed!
I was scrolling through old holiday pictures when I stumbled upon a snapshot of Hermanus Old Harbour. The image transported me back to that quaint fishing village, which has now transformed into a popular tourist destination for whale watching. It made me ponder the effects of progress on this once humble community.
As I began to reflect on the changes, I couldn’t help but wonder if Hermanus had lost some of its charm in the pursuit of tourism. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the economic benefits and the joy that comes from witnessing these majestic creatures up close. However, there’s a part of me that longs for the simplicity and authenticity of the village I once knew.
When I first visited Hermanus, it was a quiet haven for fishermen and locals. The streets were lined with small, family-owned businesses, and the harbor was filled with colorful fishing boats. But as the popularity of whale watching grew, so did the number of visitors. It seemed like everyone was jumping on the bandwagon, eager to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures.
With the influx of tourists came a wave of change. New hotels sprung up, towering over the coastline, and the once serene village became a bustling hub. Restaurants and souvenir shops replaced the old mom-and-pop stores, and the air was filled with the chatter of excited visitors. While the economic boost couldn’t be denied, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of loss for the Hermanus I remembered.
Progress is a double-edged sword. It brings prosperity and growth, but it also has the power to reshape communities and alter their character. As tourists flocked to Hermanus, the sense of community that once permeated the town began to fade. The locals, once familiar faces, were replaced with crowds of strangers. The fishermen, who were the heart and soul of the village, found it increasingly difficult to compete with larger tour operators.
Despite these changes, Hermanus remains a popular destination and a haven for whale watchers. And while part of me longs for the simplicity of the old fishing village, I can’t deny the excitement that comes from being surrounded by the beauty of nature. As I continue to reminisce about the past, I’m reminded that progress is inevitable. It’s up to us to strike a balance between preserving the essence of a place and embracing the opportunities that come with growth.
So, if you’re looking for a holiday destination that combines the charm of a small coastal town with the thrill of whale watching, Hermanus is the place to be. Just keep in mind the delicate dance between progress and preservation, and appreciate all that this transformed fishing village has to offer.
Imagine this: you’re cruising down the N3 at an incredible 120kmph. It’s the kind of speed that makes everything blur together. But if you’re not careful, you might just miss something incredible in the blink of an eye – Howick. That’s right, Howick, a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. So, let me take you on a journey to this amazing place.
Welcome to Lake Jozini
When I visited the elephants at Lake Jozini, I learned that they used to live in the southern part of the Pongola Game Reserve. However, due to a drought in 2016, they crossed over the Pongola River and settled in the area below the Lebombo Mountains. It’s amazing how they’ve been thriving in their new home ever since.
Imagine standing at the base of the magnificent Lebombo mountains, just a little south of Swaziland. It’s a place that not only reminds me of Zimbabwe’s Lake Kariba, but also offers a similar range of activities and top-notch accommodation options. I had the pleasure of basking in the warm sun while visiting Lake Jozini.
Enjoy the Beauty of Mossel Bay
I’m a regular surfer at Inner Pool in Cape Town. You’ll often find me catching some waves there, just like Jake Elkington in this photo taken by Jazz Kuschke.
Mossel Bay is so much more than just the starting point for the Garden Route. It has a pleasant climate, a rich history, and great tourist facilities, as Jazz Kuschke explains.
Paarl
Let me tell you about Paarl. It’s a town that offers a ton of adventure activities. You can go mountain biking on various trails, whether you’re a beginner or an expert. There’s something for everyone!
When it comes to tourism, people often overlook Paarl in favor of fancier places like Franschhoek and Stellenbosch. But that’s not fair to Paarl. It’s a beautiful town with a down-to-earth vibe and some amazing attractions. You’ll find great restaurants, art galleries, and coffee shops that rival any big city. Paarl really has it all!
Now let’s talk about Prince Albert. It’s a town with a rich farming history and a charming Victorian vibe. But it’s not just about the past. Prince Albert is also embracing its vibrant community and welcoming new voices.
Lastly, we have Hoedspruit. This town is a hidden gem on the Karoo tourist trail. It’s a place where you can truly connect with nature and experience the beauty of South Africa.
When it comes to game rangers, Hoedspruit is a real hotspot. It’s a small town that’s been growing at a rapid pace, constantly expanding and developing. But don’t worry, it hasn’t lost its peaceful charm – there’s still plenty to do in and around Hoedspruit.
Discover the Quirky Village of Kaapschehoop
If you’re looking for a place that feels like it’s straight out of a storybook, then Kaapschehoop is the spot for you. This village is full of unique, colorful houses that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale. And keep an eye out for the blue passion wagon as you drive in – it’s hard to miss! Plus, there are even wild horses roaming around, adding to the magical atmosphere.
Escape to Southbroom for a Relaxing Getaway
Have you ever considered visiting Southbroom? It’s a charming village nestled between two rivers on KZN’s South Coast. The main focus in Southbroom is on conservation and recreation, making it an ideal destination for a family getaway.
One of the highlights of Southbroom is its beautiful, pristine beaches. They stretch out for miles, providing the perfect setting for an early evening stroll with your kids. These long, clean beaches offer a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Another great option for outdoor lovers is the nearby Stanford Nature Reserve. This nature reserve is a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts, with its diverse range of flora and fauna. You can spend the day exploring the various hiking trails and taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
If you’re interested in getting involved in conservation efforts, Southbroom offers several opportunities for you to make a positive impact. You can participate in beach clean-ups or join local conservation organizations in their efforts to protect the natural beauty of the area.
When it comes to accommodation, Southbroom has a range of options to suit every budget. Whether you’re looking for a luxurious beachfront resort or a cozy guesthouse, you’re sure to find something that meets your needs. And if you’re a golfer, you’ll be delighted to know that Southbroom is home to an excellent golf course.
Overall, Southbroom provides the perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and conservation. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly destination or a nature lover’s paradise, Southbroom has something for everyone. So why not pack your bags and experience the beauty of Southbroom for yourself?
When I visited Stanford, I couldn’t help but notice a certain charm in the air. As I wandered through the town, admiring the unique blend of old Victorian houses and cozy Strandveld cottages, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but there was definitely something captivating about this place.
Welcome to Stanford
Imagine a breathtaking sunset over the beautiful town of Umhlanga. Picture-perfect moments like these are captured in photographs, reminding us of the beauty that surrounds us.

Discovering the Magic of Wakkerstroom
In the town of Wakkerstroom, the NG Kerk holds a prominent position, much like in many other towns.
Wakkerstroom is a peaceful village where you won’t find any traffic lights for miles around. This is something the locals appreciate and value.
