I was on my way to Groot Marico, in the North West province. It’s a place near Zeerust and Swartruggens, known as Bosman country. My editor had told me about it. I pictured Afrikaans uncles in beige outfits, ladies with curly hair like Laurika Rauch, and locals driving old Cressida cars.

‘Wow,’ I said to myself. ‘I’m going to be in a small Afrikaans town.’ I had heard of Herman Charles Bosman, the famous South African writer, but I didn’t realize how popular he was or how many fans he had. He was born in Cape Town in 1905 and was a funny and unconventional person. He liked to water weeds instead of flowers. He worked as a teacher in Groot Marico for only six months, but the town left such a mark on him that it inspired his most famous collection of short stories, the Oom Schalk Lourens series.

In 1926, I found myself behind bars, serving a 10-year sentence for my role in my stepbrother’s murder. It was a difficult and grueling experience, one that would shape the course of my life. However, destiny had other plans for me, and I was granted early release after only four years. My time in prison left an indelible mark on my soul, inspiring me to pen the powerful novel known as Cold Stone Jug.

After my release, I sought refuge in England, where I spent the next nine years. It was a period of self-discovery and growth, as I immersed myself in the vibrant culture of the country. The experiences and knowledge gained during this time would later shape my career and influence my writing.

Eventually, the call of my homeland became too strong to ignore, and I returned to South Africa. It was here that I found my true calling as a journalist. I was talking to Jacques du Plessis, the owner of Riverstill Guest farm, on the phone, trying to find a place to stay. It felt like such a difficult task, almost like pulling teeth. The dates of my visit happened to align with Bosman Weekend, which was fortunate but also made it challenging to find accommodations at such short notice. Nevertheless, I was determined to make it work. After speaking with Jacques, I became even more intrigued about Groot Marico, Bosman, and the people I would meet there.

As photographer Teagan Cunniffe and I traveled west on the N4, the sun beat down on us, making the tarmac feel never-ending. We were glued to our seats, but the occasional bursts of shrubs, cows, and jacarandas provided some diversion along the way. Finally, after about three hours, we made a left turn onto Paul Kruger Straat. The town felt somber and melancholic, as if carrying a heavy weight.

I walked through the town center and noticed the quiet streets. There were only a few businesses, like a bank, butcher shop, and grocery store. The buildings looked old and worn, standing as markers of the past. A sense of curiosity led me to enter one of these establishments.

“This place has a unique ability to heal and guide you on a personal journey,” said Egbert van Bart, the man I met at the information center. The center itself had walls made of stone, built long ago by Italian prisoners of war. Egbert and I sat together, enjoying a cup of strong and frothy moer koffie. He shared his wisdom with me, saying, “You must listen with your heart.” Egbert had a long, off-white beard and hair that reached his shoulders, giving him the appearance of a wizard dressed in hippie attire.

My life has been a colorful journey, filled with intriguing experiences. Before the Golden Acre was even built in Cape Town, I resided there, when the city was a haven for tobacconists, antique shops, and free-spirited hippies who smoked pot and searched for discarded cigarette butts on the ground. During that time, I had the pleasure of hanging out with the legendary explorer and wanderer, Ben Dekker. But it wasn’t until I settled in Groot Marico, where I’ve lived for three decades, that I truly found myself.

Groot Marico is a place where heartfelt tales are shared, reminiscent of the storytelling style of the beloved character Oom Schalk Lourens. The strength of this community lies in our commitment to each other’s lives. Santa, my wife and one of the organizers of the Bosman Weekend, perfectly captures this sentiment: “We all came together, brick by brick, to build the school. The festival is a collective effort of the people. Love is the driving force behind creation – power has no place in it.”

In my opinion, there’s something truly special about this place. It’s like a sacred land. Elf Alfred, a resident, etymologist, and writer, goes as far as calling it ‘God’s own’. And it’s not hard to understand why. This area is renowned for its incredible biodiversity. In fact, over 200 trees and various aquatic species can only be found here. Plus, it boasts the second-largest number of bird species in the entire country.

But it’s not just the natural wonders that make this place remarkable. It’s also the people who call it home. Take 71-year-old Koos Olivier, for instance. Back in 1985, he decided to establish a camp specifically for underprivileged church groups. According to him, the key to preserving this awe-inspiring place is by sparking an interest in nature among the younger generation. To him, sharing this land with others is of utmost importance. It’s not about locking gates and keeping people out. It’s about opening doors and inviting everyone in.

I have a deep understanding of the Marico Oog – a beautiful, pristine pool that marks the beginning of the Marico River. I know every inch of this magical place, from the secret hiding spots to the shimmering water that reflects the sunlight.

Drums, shakers, and various other musical instruments were handed out, and we began to jam. In that wide expanse of sky, I observed the scene before me and couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of joy. The people here, unlike any I had encountered before, possessed admirable qualities. They possessed the ability to make genuine eye contact and exuded honesty and contentment. With all the enthusiasm of Bosman himself, I beat that drum with fervor and passion.
