Guide to De Hoop

Experiencing the Majesty of South Africa’s Natural Beauty

As I stood in the heart of South Africa’s breathtaking landscape, I couldn’t help but marvel at the magnificent giants that graced the land and soared through the sky. The wide wingspan of a single vulture created a fleeting shadow over the sparkling blue waters of De Hoop’s coastal paradise. Below, life unfolded in a symphony of sights and sounds, from the graceful dance of southern right whales to the tender care they bestowed upon their offspring.

Stepping away from the water’s edge, the story took an intriguing turn. The golden sands of De Hoop emerged, their beauty renowned far and wide, sculpting majestic dunes that whispered tales of ancient times. These dunes silently testified to the presence of lush coastal forests and vibrant fynbos, blending untamed wilderness with carefully nurtured farmlands. And in the distance, the snow-capped peaks added a touch of regal grandeur.

I recently visited Potberg, where I witnessed a mesmerizing display of nature. The sky was alive with Cape vultures gracefully soaring and swirling in the warm currents of air. As I stood there, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder and hope. You see, Potberg is home to a thriving colony of these magnificent birds—a symbol of resilience in a world where their existence is threatened.

A Glimpse into the Past

But Potberg is not just a haven for nature; it is also steeped in history and human stories. As I explored the area, I discovered traces of the ancient Stone Age. The footprints left behind by our ancestors in the sandy ground reverberated with the echoes of a time long gone. Deep within the caves, I found remnants of early human life—artifacts that have reshaped our understanding of our own evolution. One particular discovery that caught my eye was a rock adorned with ochre crayon markings. It was a humble yet profound testament to the creativity and ingenuity of those who came before us.

Nestled in the midst of this stunning natural beauty was the De Hoop Collection. These charming lodgings held whispered tales from the past, of magnificent homes and families who once filled their halls. During the magical golden hour, the land was bathed in a warm, glowing light as herds of majestic elands peacefully grazed, their impressive figures outlined against the backdrop of the setting sun. As night fell, William Stephens, a man deeply connected to this land, revealed another hidden gem of De Hoop—a collection of wines that spoke volumes about the region’s rich winemaking history. Each sip was a journey, a delightful performance of flavors that celebrated the land and its stories.

Over on the other side of the vlei, there used to be the historic Melkkamer Manor House, Vlei Cottage, and Foreman’s Cottage. These beautiful buildings, made of golden sandstone, have been around since the late 1800s and are now available for guests who prefer to take care of their own meals. From our cottage perched above the vlei, we enjoyed the magnificent view of the sun setting over the estuary. As we relaxed, we even spotted a Cape zebra nibbling on grass nearby, a gentle reminder that dinner was waiting for us at the Fig Tree restaurant.

To our surprise, William, the restaurant staff, led us through a secret door at the back of the restaurant. This door took us right into the original farmstead grain silo, which had been converted into a cellar. Inside, we found ourselves surrounded by some of the finest wines from the nearby valleys, truly a treat for wine enthusiasts like ourselves.
