I recently had the opportunity to visit Sedgefield, also known as the ‘slow town,’ and I was thrilled to rank the best-rated spots according to TripAdvisor. It was an interesting and exciting experience, and I wanted to share it with you.
Sedgefield is a place that takes pride in its unhurried way of life. As I strolled through the town, I couldn’t help but notice the charming and quaint atmosphere. The natural beauty of the surroundings is simply breathtaking, with picturesque landscapes and stunning views.
One of the things I enjoyed the most was exploring the local restaurants. It was a culinary adventure that satisfied my taste buds and left me wanting more. From cozy cafes serving delicious coffee and homemade pastries to family-run eateries offering mouthwatering traditional dishes, there was something for everyone.
But it wasn’t just about the food. Sedgefield has a variety of attractions and activities that cater to different interests. Whether you’re a nature lover, an art enthusiast, or a thrill-seeker, you’ll find something that captures your attention. I had the opportunity to visit the local markets, indulge in some retail therapy, and even try out some water sports.
What I found particularly fascinating about Sedgefield was its community spirit. The residents are incredibly welcoming and passionate about their town. They take great pride in maintaining a sustainable and eco-friendly environment. It was inspirational to see how they work together to protect the natural beauty of the area.
Sedgefield is truly a hidden gem that deserves to be explored. So if you’re looking for a peaceful and captivating getaway, I highly recommend considering this charming ‘slow town’. Whether you’re interested in delicious food, natural beauty, or a vibrant community, Sedgefield has it all.
In conclusion, my experience in Sedgefield was nothing short of amazing. I was captivated by the town’s charm, the warm and friendly people, and the endless opportunities for relaxation and adventure. It’s a place that offers a unique and memorable experience, and I can’t wait to go back.
When planning a trip, it can be helpful to check out public review sites like TripAdvisor. These sites offer valuable information, but they have their limitations. They don’t provide a consistent and specific perspective, where each property is evaluated based on the same standards, and where you can compare and organize your options. That’s why they can sometimes fall short when it comes to finding the perfect place to stay.
So, to help you make the right choice, I took it upon myself to explore the accommodations in and around Sedgefield, one of the best places to stay in Southern Africa. I didn’t just rely on TripAdvisor’s rankings though. I personally visited and inspected 27 of the top-rated hotels, B&Bs/inns, and specialty lodgings. And believe me, I checked out many more options that weren’t even listed.
The result of my thorough exploration is a reliable guide that has been tested and proven. It will lead you to the very best places to stay in Sedgefield – a hidden gem along the Garden Route.
Why pick Sedgefield?
Right between the famous Garden Route spots of Knysna and Wilderness, most people just pass through Sedgefield without realizing its natural wonders. Beyond the bustling N2 road, lies a region teeming with natural beauty. Sedgefield is nestled between the Indian Ocean, Groenvlei lake in the Goukamma Nature Reserve, Swartvlei lake in the Wilderness National Park, and a meandering estuary that winds through the town. With its mix of saltwater and freshwater, lush forests, and long sandy beaches, Sedgefield is a true gem. However, it’s important to choose your accommodation wisely, as there are areas with unappealing features, like too many brick-faced buildings and uniform developments.
- Sedgefield, the first accredited Cittaslow Slow Town in South Africa, is a unique place that prioritizes quality of life over the fast-paced lifestyle. It’s the only town in Africa that is part of this Italian organization. The residents of Sedgefield are a diverse community, including crafters and artists who have escaped from big cities, and they passionately embrace the slow life.
- In just a few words: great deals. Sedgefield and Knysna, which are both part of the same municipality, have a friendly competition. Sedgefield, located just 25km away from Knysna, offers a peaceful and traffic-free environment, a welcoming small-town vibe, and close proximity to a beautiful beach. The best part? Accommodation in Sedgefield can be up to 50% more affordable than in Knysna, making it a great value for your stay.
In Sedgefield, you’ll find an amazing food market called Wild Oats. It’s definitely one of the best in the country! This charming town on the Garden Route coast is also a fantastic place to learn how to kitesurf. And if you’re into fishing, you’re in luck! Sedgefield offers both fresh and saltwater lakes, giving you plenty of options. It’s even starting to rival Wilderness as the go-to spot for paragliding in the region.
Of course, Sedgefield has all the usual activities you’d expect on the Garden Route. You can go birdwatching or try your hand at mountain biking, sailing, canoeing, or hiking on forest trails. When you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll, the long beaches are perfect.
Sedgefield truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or just looking for a peaceful getaway, this town has it all. And if you’re a food lover, Wild Oats Market will be a paradise for you. So why not pack your bags and head to Sedgefield for an unforgettable experience? You won’t regret it!

Indulge in a luxurious spa treatment, savor delectable cuisine at the hotel’s elegant restaurant, or take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters of the pool. Each room is meticulously designed to provide the utmost comfort and an unparalleled sense of peace. Whether you choose a cozy room with a direct view of the lake or a spacious suite with a private balcony, you can be sure that your stay will be nothing short of extraordinary.
One of the standout features of this hotel is its commitment to excellence in service. The staff at Lakeside Lodge & Spa are dedicated to ensuring that every aspect of your stay is flawless. Their warm and friendly demeanor will make you feel right at home, and their attention to detail will leave you in awe.
To top it all off, Lakeside Lodge & Spa has earned the prestigious title of being the number one hotel, according to TripAdvisor. This accolade is a testament to the hotel’s unwavering commitment to providing an exceptional experience to each and every guest.
So, if you’re looking for the best hotel with a lake view, Lakeside Lodge & Spa is the ultimate choice. Immerse yourself in the serenity and beauty of nature, indulge in luxurious amenities, and experience unmatched hospitality. Your dream vacation awaits at Lakeside Lodge & Spa. Book your stay today and let the magic unfold.
Wow, this boutique hotel has an amazing location! It sits right on the western shores of Swartvlei Lake, the largest lake in Wilderness National Park. The view is absolutely breathtaking! From here, you can relax on the well-kept lawns and take in the beauty of the undulating hills and the expansive water. It’s a picture-perfect scene that will leave you in awe.
The Lakeside Lodge & Spa offers everything you need for a luxurious and comfortable stay. You can spend the whole day lounging on their comfy chairs, sipping on a glass of Benguela Cove wine (which happens to be owned by the hotel’s proprietor, Penny Streeter), and simply enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. The lake is like a mirror in the morning, glittering in the midday sun, and a deep, mysterious pool at night. It’s a sight you won’t soon forget.
Despite being a small and recently opened hotel, Lakeside Lodge & Spa offers all the amenities you would expect from a full-service establishment. They have a restaurant, a bar, and even a spa for some pampering. The staff is well-trained and ready to cater to your every need. The best part is that this is an exclusive experience. With a maximum capacity of just 18 guests, you’ll feel like you have the entire place to yourself.
Architecturally, the hotel may not be anything remarkable, but it’s decorated in a way that prioritizes comfort. The rooms are cozy and inviting, ensuring that you have a restful night’s sleep. The hotel may still have some room for improvement as it matures, but I’m hopeful that they’ll eventually remove those large Benguela Cove promotional posters. They don’t quite fit with the overall aesthetic.
Room suggestion: If you want privacy and a stunning view of the lake, room 9 is the perfect choice. It’s the only room that allows you to relax in bed while enjoying direct views of the lake. Rooms 8 and 9 are also great options if you want a semi-separate wing. Rooms 2 to 7 are all the same, but I’m not sure if room 1, the honeymoon suite, is worth the extra R1000 per night. If you’re in search of a luxurious honeymoon suite, I highly recommend the master suite at Dover on Sea (see details below).
Pricing: The cost starts at R2500 per room, accommodating two people.
Contact information: You can find more information, special offers, and upcoming events at lakesidelodge.co.za.
Top choice for large families
2. Pine Lake Marina
TripAdvisor ranking: No. 4 out of 11 (B&B/Inn)
Just imagine, being on the edge of Swartvlei, close to Lakeside Lodge. That’s where Pine Lake Marina is located. It’s not your ordinary place – it’s a resort with a lot of self-catering cabins and apartments. They have around 185 of them! You might think they look like the ones you see in Kruger – those round buildings. But guess what? They don’t have any tents or caravans. It’s important to mention that it’s a really safe place, which is great for families. There are loads of things you can do here with your family. They have not one, but five pools for you to splash around in. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can go out on a canoe or a pedalo. They even have Hobies! And that’s not all – they have a games room, a squash court, tennis courts, and a putt-putt course. Oh, and trampolines too! It’s like a wonderland for kids. They can spend all day playing here and only come running back when it’s mealtime. Here’s something interesting – they even have special units for people with small dogs. So even your furry friends can have a great time! Now, here’s something you need to keep in mind. There are some really big buildings right on the lakefront. But here’s the catch – they’re only for special events like weddings. It can be frustrating to see these empty spaces blocking the view. So my suggestion is, don’t book here unless you can get a unit with a view of the lake. Trust me, it’s worth it. Pine Lake Marina is a really popular place, so you should book your spot soon. Their website is really easy to use. You can even choose which unit you want. And guess what? They’re already accepting bookings for next year. So what are you waiting for? Your perfect resort-style holiday is just a few clicks away!
Here’s a tip for you: If you want a perfect view of the lake, you should book Khaki apartments K15 to K30. In particular, try to get one of the odd-numbered units on the top floor. The even-numbered Khaki units don’t have such great views. If you’re traveling with small kids, consider booking White W803 or W804. These units are located near a play park that faces the lake, so your little ones can run around freely. And if you’re bringing your furry friend along, I recommend booking Silver S03/688 or S04/687. These dog-friendly units offer privacy and lovely views of a small forest. Personally, I really liked Aqua A03/674 because it’s tucked away and feels secluded.
Now, let’s talk about cost: The prices vary depending on when you make your booking and how many people you’ll be staying with. Until the end of September, a four-sleeper unit (which includes two children using the sleeper couch) costs R550. For the best lake-facing Khaki units with two bedrooms and accommodations for up to six guests, the price is R2440.
If you want to get in touch: You can visit the pinelakemarina.co.za website for more information.

So, what are you waiting for? Escape the ordinary and embark on an extraordinary journey to Kalanderkloof Cottage. Your dream retreat awaits.
When Hennie and Helga renovated their farmhouse a few years ago, they decided to rebuild their old labourer’s cottage as well. They wanted something different from the traditional log cabin style that is typically seen in the region, so Helga, who is an architect, designed a contemporary cabin that was simple, affordable, and took advantage of the stunning views. The best part? The cabin is completely off the grid, making it an eco-friendly choice. The couple has since moved back into the farmhouse, and they now offer Kalanderkloof Cottage to anyone seeking a secluded getaway.
The cottage is perfect for a romantic retreat, though it can also accommodate couples with children under the age of 11, thanks to a sleeper couch in the lounge. The main bedroom is separate, providing privacy for everyone. The cottage is equipped with rain-harvested water and solar or gas energy, minimizing its impact on the environment. When you stay at Kalanderkloof Cottage, you can expect peace and tranquility, as the 108-hectare farm is secluded and you’re unlikely to encounter anyone else during your stay.
One of the highlights of the cottage is the breathtaking views it offers. Whether you’re taking a shower, enjoying a braai, or simply relaxing, you’ll be treated to stunning vistas of the forested hills. And if you’re feeling adventurous, there are plenty of pathways on the farm for you to explore. You can wander through the pine plantations, fynbos, and natural forest on foot or by bike, immersing yourself in the beauty of nature.
If you’d like to cool off, you can take a leisurely 20-minute walk to the Karatara River. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for a refreshing dip. And when you feel like exploring the surrounding area, the town of Sedgefield is just a 10 to 15-minute drive away.
If you’re on the lookout for an affordable and enjoyable getaway, then you’ll want to consider Bushbuck Camp. It offers a great value at just R950 per night for up to two adults and two kids. And that’s not all – the price includes a starter breakfast pack with eggs, milk, coffee, tea, and more. Plus, you’ll have access to as much wattle wood as you can burn to keep warm and cozy.
Now, let’s talk about how you can get in touch. The best way to contact Bushbuck Camp is by visiting their website at kalanderkloof.co.za. There, you’ll find all the information you need to book your stay and make your vacation dreams a reality.

4. Bushbuck Camp
Ranked as the 5th best specialty lodging on TripAdvisor
If you (or your kids) love the idea of camping by the lake but don’t want the hassle of setting up a tent and dealing with crowded facilities that smell like disinfectant, then you’ll adore Bushbuck Camp. The journey to get here is an adventure in itself. Wind your way up the steep forested hill next to the N2, take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking views of the river network from the top, and then follow a narrow and bumpy trail down to a secluded and peaceful campsite. You’ll find a fully furnished tent waiting for you on a large wooden platform under magnificient milkwood trees. There is one other dwelling on the property that you’ll share with the owner’s father, who is friendly but tends to keep to himself. So while it’s not completely private, it’s pretty close. Plus, you’ll have direct access to the lake and can use canoes and a paddleboat whenever you please. The accommodations are quite rustic but charming. There are two canvas rooms, one with a double bed and the other with a bunk bed. The open-air kitchen, dining area, and barbecue spot offer lovely lake views. And don’t worry, the bathroom is covered and all yours, with a view of the lake as well.
Price: For two people, it’s R450, for three it’s R550, and for four it’s R650. During peak season (from 10 December to 15 January and Easter weekend), the prices are R550 for two people, R700 for three people, and R850 for four people.

The best choice for a large, self-catering house in Sedgefield
Introducing Sedgies on the Water
A hidden gem, not yet listed
Sedgies on the Water.
Forget the name, because this house is truly special. It’s not just the best-looking house in Sedgefield, but it’s also in the perfect location. If you want a great-value, self-catering option in Sedgefield, this is the place to be. Situated just below Kingfisher Drive, Sedgies on the Water offers a stunning view from its elevated position above the Swartvlei estuary. And the best part? You have direct access to your very own private beach and the calm, shallow waters of the estuary. This is a dream come true for families with children. While there might be a few other options on Kingfisher Drive, none of them can match the beauty of this house. The large, double lounge area opens up to a wrap-around deck that overlooks the lagoon. The two rooms facing the lagoon were specifically designed to make the most of the breathtaking views. There are also two more rooms with either king or twin beds, offering garden and partial lagoon views. The open-plan kitchen is fully equipped, and if you request it, Gail, the owner who lives upstairs (but won’t bother you), will serve you a delicious breakfast. So, what are you waiting for? Experience the magic of Sedgies on the Water for yourself.
Cost: If you’re looking for a place to stay, prices at Sedgies B&B range from R2000 to R2800 for one to four people. For larger groups, it’s R2800 to R3200. Best B&B with an incredible view of the sea
6. Dover on Sea
TripAdvisor ranking: Number 1 out of 11 B&B/Inns
You won’t find a better deal for an ocean view in Sedgefield than Dover on Sea. The rooms here are luxurious and offer amazing, uninterrupted views of the endless horizon. The hotel is located high above Cola Beach, just a 10-minute walk away. The surrounding neighborhood may not be the most impressive, but once you step inside Dover on Sea, you won’t even notice. The boho Afro-chic decor creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere, especially in the lounge area with its massive fireplace and the deck with a pool. You could easily spend the whole day just relaxing at the hotel instead of venturing out.
Hey there! Want a fantastic room that’s both luxurious and romantic? Look no further than the enormous master suite at an unbeatable R750 per person sharing this winter. It’s a steal, I promise! If you’re on a budget, Suites 2 and 3 are your best bet. Located on the top floor, they offer stunning sea views and private balconies for just R650 per person this winter. Suites 4 and 5 cost the same, but the views are not as great, and Suite 5 overlooks the pool.
Speaking of costs, in winter, you can enjoy Suites 6 and 7 for only R480 per person sharing. But if you’re in the mood for a peak season getaway, the master suite can be yours for R950 per person sharing. Trust me, it’s worth every penny!

Welcome to Laguna Cabanas! It may not be the most glamorous accommodation, but let me assure you, it’s as clean as a whistle. We take pride in maintaining the pristine condition of our property. And hey, have you seen our well-manicured lawn? It’s perfect for a game of boules if you’re up for it.
Now, let me tell you what sets us apart. We are located on Charles Te Water, the most charming street in Sedgefield. This narrow lane runs alongside the estuary, offering a breathtaking view of the protected dune. It’s a nature lover’s paradise, and the kids will have a blast exploring the natural playground that surrounds us.
What makes our location truly special is the low-key development in the area. It’s like stepping back in time to the old-fashioned holiday village that Sedgefield once was. You won’t find any high-rise buildings here. It’s all about embracing the simplicity and tranquility of this peaceful retreat.

Best place to experience the beauty of nature
8. Teniqua Treetops
TripAdvisor ranking: Rated as the top specialty lodging out of 14 options
When you step into these ancient Afromontane forests, you can feel the special energy that surrounds them. The Teniqua “tree house tents” take full advantage of this unique environment, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature like never before. Set high above the forest floor, these eight tree houses are carefully positioned for the best views and maximum privacy. They blend seamlessly into the surrounding trees, making you feel like you are a part of the forest itself.
Imagine taking a bath on your private deck, surrounded by the sparkling stars above and the gentle sounds of the forest below. It’s a truly magical experience. Each tree house has both indoor and outdoor seating areas, so you can relax and enjoy the beauty of nature from every angle. The private deck even comes with a Weber, so you can grill up a delicious meal while soaking in the breathtaking views.
The tented bedrooms are cozy and comfortable, providing a peaceful retreat after a day spent exploring. The well-equipped kitchen is perfect for preparing meals, and the bathroom offers stunning views that will leave you in awe. It’s worth noting that the tree houses higher up in the canopy have composting toilets, which may not be to everyone’s liking, so be sure to check before booking.
When you’re ready to venture out, there are plenty of activities to keep you entertained. Take a stroll through the forest and discover hidden swimming holes in the Karatara River, or head to the central entertainment area for a refreshing dip in the dam-style pool. There’s even a games room where you can challenge your loved ones to some friendly competition. With so much to do right at your fingertips, there’s no need to venture far.
If you do decide to explore further afield, the charming towns of Sedgefield and Knysna are just a short drive away. Whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely stroll along the beach or a shopping spree in the local boutiques, you’ll find it all within easy reach. But no matter where your adventures take you, you can always return to the tranquility of your tree house sanctuary.
Hey there! I’ve got a great recommendation for you. Let me tell you about my favorite spot called Loerie’s Nest – a spectacular honeymoon tree house with a unique al fresco bathroom on the deck. It’s truly an oasis of tranquility and romance. And wait until you hear about the flushing loo! Talk about luxury!
Now, if you’re traveling with your family, no worries. They’ve got you covered with four fantastic family tents. Two of them even have two bedrooms, perfect if you’ve got little ones who might find the sounds of the forest a bit intimidating. And guess what? Greenbeard is completely disabled-friendly, so everyone can enjoy their stay.
Let’s talk prices:
- Honeymoon tree house: Starting at R1400
- One-bedroomed tree houses (sleeps four): R1730
- Two-bedroomed tree houses (sleeps four): R2090
Oh, and don’t forget about their winter specials! You can get a whopping 30% discount – except during school holidays. It’s an amazing deal that you don’t want to miss.

Also worth considering
If you’re looking for one of the best backpackers in the country, then you have to check out Afrovibe Adventure Lodge. It’s ranked second out of fourteen speciality lodgings, and trust me when I say it’s worth it. This place is perfect for hosting a big 21st birthday party or any celebration for that matter. Situated just behind the high dune that stretches along Myoli Beach, you can relax with your toes in the sand at their PiliPili beach bar. The team who runs the lodge are extremely friendly and they offer a wide range of activities, especially if you’re into kitesurfing, as they’re the go-to spot in the area. They have two shared dormitories that go for R140 per person, as well as several private rooms with double beds starting at R500 for a double. Just make sure to book a private room that doesn’t have bunk beds.
Another great option is the Beach you to it. It’s a classic Sedgefield A-frame that was recently renovated by a local real estate agent. It boasts four cozy bedrooms and is conveniently located just two blocks away from the estuary. You’ll also have access to a pool and a garden. This place can sleep up to eight people and starts at R1200 per night.
Welcome to Lake Pleasant Chalets & Lodges! I’m thrilled to tell you all about our amazing holiday resort located just outside of Sedgefield, right on the shores of Groenvlei. You’ll love it here, I promise!
Now, let’s talk about what sets us apart from other places like Pine Lake Marina. While we may not have all the fancy facilities they do, we make up for it with our spacious cabins and unmatched privacy. Of course, things can get a bit livelier when the campsite is crowded, but that’s all part of the fun!
Our gardens are like something out of a fairytale, with two stunning pools for you to enjoy. I must say, one of these pools has the most enchanting setting—it’s truly magical! And here’s another great perk: you can take a leisurely stroll over to Lake Pleasant Living for delicious meals and rejuvenating spa treatments.
Now, when it comes to accommodations, I have a personal favorite. The three-bedroom timber chalets are simply marvelous. I can’t get enough of their cozy charm! Oh, and the best part? Prices range from just R700 to R2450, so you won’t break the bank.
But hey, don’t just take my word for it! Let me introduce you to Lake Pleasant Living, another fantastic option in Sedgefield. This luxury hotel is definitely worth considering, especially when you factor in the incredible value it offers.
If you want the absolute best lake views, be sure to book one of the two-bedroom units. I recommend units 1, 4, 5, 6, or 10—they sleep four people and start at just R2885. And if you’re looking for something a bit more intimate, the one-bedroom units, like units 2, 3, 8, or 9, are perfect. They sleep two people and start at R1695.
So there you have it, my friend! Lake Pleasant Chalets & Lodges and Lake Pleasant Living are both excellent choices for your Sedgefield getaway. It all comes down to what you’re looking for. Just know that we’re here to provide you with an unforgettable experience, no matter which option you choose.
If you’re looking for privacy in the Goukamma Nature Reserve, Mvubu Bush Lodge is the perfect choice. As someone who enjoys the peace and tranquility of nature, I highly recommend this lodge. It’s so popular that people book it months in advance! It has two bedrooms and can accommodate up to four people, with rates starting from R1210.
Now, if you need three bedrooms instead, you have two options: the Fish Eagle Loft and Otter’s Rest Lodge. The Fish Eagle Loft is a duplex and can sleep two people, with rates starting from R705. On the other hand, Otter’s Rest Lodge can sleep four people, with rates starting from R1150. You can even book these lodges together for a larger group!
Welcome to the Sedgefield estuary! This beautiful location leads out onto a stunning beach, perfect for your next adventure.
