When you think of famous wine regions in South Africa, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek might come to mind, but the roads leading to the farms in Durbanville’s wine valley are just as intriguing, if not more so.
I had the pleasure of exploring Groot Phesantekraal, a farm with a rich history that stretches all the way back to 1698. Not only did they have a delightful restaurant, but their wines were also fascinating and truly unique.
Imagine a peaceful farm, with vast fields of wheat, vineyards, and gentle animals grazing. That’s how this lovely estate used to be. It has a rich history, passed down through four generations of passionate owners, André and Ronelle Brink.
But things have changed over time. Today, this place is a beautiful blend of rustic charm and modern elegance. You can experience the best of both worlds here, surrounded by the tranquility of the countryside while enjoying delicious gourmet food in their restaurant. What’s more, the restaurant is located in the farm’s original stable, adding a touch of history to your dining experience.
Welcome to the restaurant
I have to tell you about this incredible place I visited in Durbanville. It’s one of the oldest farms in the area, and let me tell you, it has quite a story to tell. The restaurant itself is housed in a converted farm stable that was built back in 1767. Can you believe it? Walking into the place felt like stepping back in time.
As soon as I entered, I couldn’t help but admire the charming details that still remained from the farm’s history. The white-washed plastered walls, the original stone floors, and the open-beam thatched roof all added to the rustic atmosphere. And get this – they even kept the original feeding troughs! It was truly a unique blend of old and new.
The views from the restaurant were simply breathtaking. I could see the rolling hills stretching out before me, and it was such a peaceful sight. It really made me appreciate the beauty of the farm and its surroundings.
Of course, the food was just as incredible as the ambiance. We had the pleasure of trying the harrisa lamb ragu with soft polenta, baby spinach, baby veg, pickled red onions, and Turkish apricots. Let me tell you, the lamb was so tender and flavorful, it practically melted in my mouth. It was the perfect pairing with Groot Phesantekraal’s Berliet Pinotage from their winter menu.
I should mention that the menu changes regularly to make use of seasonal ingredients, many of which are sourced right from the farm itself. They just released their spring menu, so there are even more delicious options to try.
Overall, my experience at this farm restaurant was truly unforgettable. Between the rich history, the stunning views, and the mouthwatering food, I couldn’t have asked for a better time. If you’re ever in Durbanville, this place is an absolute must-visit.
Tuesday to Friday
I serve breakfast and lunch from Tuesdays to Fridays. You can start the day with a Full Farmer’s Breakfast, made with fresh eggs straight from the farm. Or if you prefer something different, you can try the Smoked Salmon Potato Hash or the Sweet Hot Cross Bun French Toast – both of which are quite popular.
For lunch, there are some classic favorites that are always on the menu, like steak, slow-roasted pork belly, lamb, and pan-seared line-caught catch of the day. However, the sides and trimmings change based on the season. Don’t worry if you’re a vegetarian, I have an interesting dish just for you. And of course, there are always some delicious desserts to choose from. I even have limited options for vegans and kids, so no one misses out on a tasty meal.

Discovering the Art of Wine Tasting
When it comes to exploring the world of wine, one fascinating experience awaits you: wine tasting. So why is wine tasting such a popular pastime? For starters, it allows you to fully immerse yourself in the sensory journey of wine, a practice that can be both enlightening and enjoyable.
When someone first initiates a wine tasting, their senses may be overwhelmed by the enticing aromas and flavors that fill the air. As I sit at the table, holding my glass of rich red wine to the light, I feel a sense of anticipation building. When I take my first sip, a burst of flavor dances across my taste buds, and I can’t help but feel a profound connection with the beverage in front of me.
As I delve deeper into the art of wine tasting, I discover that each wine has its own unique story to tell. The color of the wine provides clues about its age and variety, while the aroma gives hints of the flavors that await. With each sip, I am transported to a different time and place, connected to the land and the people who cultivated the grapes.
But wine tasting goes beyond simply savoring the flavors and aromas. It also involves analyzing the characteristics of the wine, such as its acidity, body, and tannins. By paying attention to these elements, I can better understand and appreciate the complexities of the wine. It’s like solving a puzzle, unraveling the intricacies one sip at a time.
While one person may enjoy a robust, full-bodied red wine, another might prefer a crisp and refreshing white. This is the beauty of wine tasting – it’s a personal journey of discovery, where each individual can find their own preferences and expand their palate.
If you’re new to wine tasting, don’t be afraid to experiment and try different varieties. Take your time to savor each sip and let the flavors unfold on your tongue. As you gain experience and knowledge, you’ll begin to recognize the subtle nuances and appreciate the skill and dedication that goes into producing each bottle of wine.
So, next time you find yourself in the company of a glass of wine, take a moment to truly engage with it. Let your senses guide you on a captivating journey, and allow yourself to be swept away by the world of wine tasting. Who knows, you might just discover a newfound passion and appreciation for the art of winemaking.
Hey there! Come on in and join me for a wine tasting experience like no other at Groot Phesantekraal MMC. Step into the tasting room and be greeted by a design that will blow you away, courtesy of Jacques Erasmus of Hemelhuijs and Ronelle Brink.
One of the first things you’ll notice is a stunning wall of shelves adorned with more than 100 classic glass storage jars. And guess what? Each jar is filled with a unique wine aroma that will transport your senses. Imagine inhaling the rich scents of black cardamom, szechuan pepper, eucalyptus, nougat, cut-grass, coconut, cloves, ginger, vanilla, and even cumin seeds. It’s like stepping into a magical world of fragrances!
And that’s not all. Prepare to be mesmerized by the breathtaking lighting fixtures adorning the room. These incredible pieces of art are made from old glass decanters, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
I’m delighted to share that, in addition to their marvelous wine selection, Groot Phesantekraal also offers their very own extra virgin olive oil. You’ll find this delightful oil available for purchase at the tasting room, and it can be yours for just R70 a bottle. For a truly unique experience, private tastings take place in the original chicken coop next door. That’s where I had the pleasure of sampling all six of Groot Phesantekraal’s exceptional wines. Throughout the tasting, the winemaker, Etienne Louw, was incredibly passionate and guided me through the flavors with great enthusiasm.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed and informal setting, you can choose to have your tasting on the grassy terrace. Picture this: you’re sitting on the terrace, savoring your wine, and enjoying a delightful cheese and charcuterie platter. It’s the perfect combination of flavors, all while surrounded by the beauty of the outdoors.
