Hey, I’m Ryan Enslin and I’ve got your back!

Ah, the glorious warmer months in South Africa. Who doesn’t love them? Spring arrives, invitations for braais come pouring in, and we can finally ditch those long pants for some shorts. Here in Joburg, our spring is so vibrant that it’s practically summer. The days are simply magnificent. Life takes on a rosy hue once more, with blossoms blooming and the dry Highveld getting a much-needed dose of green.

Speaking of green, Joburg is famous for its abundance of trees. We truly are spoiled for choice when it comes to immersing ourselves in nature. Just a short drive in any direction from the city center opens up a world of hiking trails that take you deep into the heart of nature.

Hey there! Did you know that you can have a ton of fun in nature? You can mountain bike, fish, abseil, and even go river rafting or quad biking! It’s a paradise for outdoor activities.

Explore Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve

I’ve been going to Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve for as long as I can remember. It’s always been my go-to place, especially on Sundays when I have no plans. This reserve holds a special place in my heart and is just a short 35-minute drive south of Joburg. Covering an impressive 19,000 hectares, this reserve is home to the ruins of an ancient Tswana city.

There are three hiking trails at Suikerbosrand, each with different distances: 17km, 10km, and 4.5km. There’s also a 1km trail that’s wheelchair-friendly. If you want to stay overnight and make a weekend of it, there are facilities available. If you prefer to explore on a bike, there are plenty of mountain bike trails to choose from. And if you’re more of a road trip person, there are 60km of tarred roads for you to drive on.

Now let’s talk about Mountain Sanctuary Park.

Located in Hartbeespoort, Mountain Sanctuary Park is a privately owned reserve that spans across 1,000 hectares of land. It’s famous for its natural rock pools, which provide the perfect escape from urban life. Just a short 20-minute walk and you’ll find yourself at the closest pool.

First up, we have Mountain Sanctuary Park. Although they no longer allow day visitors, you can still have an incredible experience with their overnight hikes. They offer a variety of routes to choose from, and they even have different types of accommodation available. If you’re not up for an overnight adventure, you can also join one of their guided day-hikes, which can last either 3 hours or 4.5 hours. And don’t worry, they’ve got a lovely pool and picnic area where you can relax and enjoy a good old South African braai!

Make sure you book in advance, though, as Mountain Sanctuary Park likes to keep things intimate by limiting the number of visitors.

Now, let’s move on to Ezemvelo Nature Reserve.

If you’re into hiking, mountain biking, game drives, fishing, or bird watching, this is the place for you! Just a short drive from Pretoria, Ezemvelo Nature Reserve will give you that genuine “out in the bush” feeling. With its diverse wildlife, including zebras, wildebeest, and red hartebeest, you’ll definitely be able to connect with nature here.
