When I first laid eyes on the R18, I was completely stumped. It felt as though I had won a blind date with a boxer named Brunhilde who also happened to play the saxophone in a Cabaret. In other words, I had no idea what to do with it. So, I decided to take it whale hunting.
But here’s the catch: the R18 was too big and bulky for me to navigate easily. The coastal road between Cape Town and Llandudno, which I usually breezed through, became more of a leisurely cruise. It gave me the opportunity to gaze out at the sea, hoping to catch a glimpse of Moby Dick’s mysterious spray. Unfortunately, there was no sign of him. However, as I made my way through the winding curves of Chapman’s Peak and the less complex coastal road between Cape Point and Simon’s Town, I suddenly noticed a captivating shadow dancing across the ocean. It was a pod of dolphins!
Without wasting any time, I pulled over and launched my drone into the sky. This allowed me to capture breathtaking footage of the dolphins from a unique aerial perspective.
As I filmed, something shifted. The passersby didn’t care about my footage; they were entranced by the magnificent machine before them. An old-timer, with a rugged face full of history, began sharing stories of café racing and the memories it held. He couldn’t contain his excitement when he mentioned the R69, which had transformed into something even greater – longer, lower, and undeniably sexier. The mere thought of its 1800cc engine, the most potent BMW boxer engine ever created, sent shivers down his spine.
Leaving the serpentine roads behind, it all became clear as the road stretched out like a black ribbon. The wind howled and the desire for a windshield grew stronger. So, I extended my body, leaning into the rushing air, and when I hit the speed of one hundred miles per hour, a thrilling tremor ran through me. It was as though I had just struck a massive beast with a harpoon. I was bound to this incredible titan, and I couldn’t help but wonder how much more power it had in store.
After that intense experience, I definitely needed a drink. So, I headed to Franschhoek, a place where they didn’t allow alcohol. But that wasn’t my main reason for going there. I had my eyes set on something else – the famous pass. It was the ultimate test for both man and machine, and even baboons. Believe it or not, I almost collided with one of those creatures as it darted across the road on the third turn. We were equally surprised, I think. That baboon had witnessed all kinds of motorcycles racing through his mountain. If only he could speak, he’d be the most experienced commentator in MotoGP history. But here I was, riding a bike that looked like those old classics he had seen chugging up the hill. Could they really handle this much speed? He barked at me, and I barked back, revving the engine as I zipped past the bend, just narrowly avoiding the loose gravel on the side of the road.
As I rode through the mountain pass, I couldn’t help but be amazed by the graceful curves that lay ahead. It didn’t matter how fast I was going, those curves had a beauty that captivated me. The pots on the side of the road seemed to dance as I zipped past them, a symphony playing in my mind. Was it Beethoven’s “Ninth” or perhaps Rammstein’s “Ghost in the Machine?” I couldn’t quite recall. Just as I was lost in the music, the scrape of my foot peg snapped me back to reality.
Slowing down a bit, I continued on my journey with a more tranquil pace, as if moving to the tune of the “Moonlight Sonata.” Over the top of the pass, down and up again, I felt a lightness in my heavy metal revival. It was as if the wind itself was guiding me, carrying me along.
In that moment, I realized that this ride was more than just a passing fling. I wanted to explore this relationship further, to go faster and see where it could take me. However, there was one condition: I needed a screen.
The Technical Side of Things
When you first lay eyes on the BMW R18, you might not think of it as a “technical” motorcycle. And that’s exactly what makes it so compelling. It’s a bike for true enthusiasts – a beast of an engine housed within a classic cruiser frame, stripped down to its core. However, don’t be fooled by its vintage appearance. Beneath that timeless exterior lies a fair amount of modern technology.
For instance, the BMW R18 comes equipped with features like Automatic Stability Control, cornering ABS, and cruise control. These advanced systems enhance your riding experience and ensure you have optimal control over the bike at all times.
Another clever addition to the R18 is the reverse assist gear. With a weight of 345kg, maneuvering this heavyweight on slopes can be quite a challenge. But fear not, this handy feature makes it effortless to park the bike, even on an incline.
When it comes to riding modes, the R18 doesn’t skimp on options. You have three modes to choose from: Rain, Roll, and Rock. While each mode offers a different riding experience, it seems that selecting Rock is the best way to go – unless you find yourself caught in a heavy downpour.
The Most Powerful BMW Boxer Engine to Date
Back in 1923, BMW started making air-cooled boxer engines. They started with a small 486cc flat-twin, but now, a hundred years later, they’ve come out with this massive 1802cc beast. It’s truly impressive. It can churn out 67 kW (91 hp) of power at 4,750 rpm, but what really gets me excited is the crazy amount of torque it has – a whopping 150 Nm that’s available at all times between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm.
Now, let’s talk about some of the cool features this bike has:
- You’ve got keyless ride, so no more fumbling for your keys.
- The rear swingarm has an enclosed axle drive, and the telescopic fork with sleeves and cantilever suspension strut make for a smooth and comfy ride.
- LED lighting for better visibility.
- A cool exposed drive shaft that adds to the bike’s rugged look.
- And if you’re into customizing your ride, BMW Motorrad Accessories have got you covered with their Ride & Style Collection – they even offer different screens for added style.
