2. Lower Sabie Rest Camp

When it comes to Kruger’s top rest camps, Lower Sabie is a close runner-up. Situated in the southern region and bordered by the Sabie River, this camp is a favorite among visitors. The river’s perennial flow attracts a plethora of wildlife throughout the year, making it a haven for game viewing. Lower Sabie is particularly renowned for its thriving warthog population and boasts one of the highest game densities in the park. Here, you’ll have the chance to spot lions, cheetahs, buffalos, and hippos.

As I gaze at the serene river views, I can’t help but feel a sense of tranquility. Many of the bungalows and tents provide this picturesque scenery, with the majestic Lebombo mountains serving as a stunning backdrop. Similar to Letaba, Lower Sabie offers a variety of accommodations to suit your preferences, ranging from cozy guesthouses to spacious campsites. They even recently added semi-luxury two-bedded tents for a touch of indulgence. Moreover, Lower Sabie takes pride in being one of the most wheelchair-friendly camps in Kruger.

3. Tsendze Rustic Campsite

When it comes to camping in Kruger, Tsendze is in a league of its own. It’s known as the best spot in the entire park, and for good reason. Here, you can truly experience the wild and peaceful side of nature, without any distractions like electricity or generators.

Rodgers Hobyane and Elina Mona are the incredible hosts who take care of the camp and make sure your stay is unforgettable. Their hospitality is so exceptional that people book their spots here a whole year in advance. Rodgers is even on a first-name basis with the adorable owls that call Tsendze their home. He’s happy to show you where they nest and hang out in the trees.

Tsendze has a total of 34 campsites, each offering a unique camping experience. And don’t worry, there are two ablution blocks and fully equipped kitchens with gas-powered geysers and the best outdoor showers you can find.

Situated in mopane territory, just 8 kilometers south of the Mopani rest camp, Tsendze offers fantastic game viewing opportunities. You’ll be amazed at the variety of animals that stroll past the fence at night, right in front of your eyes. And if you’re in need of a delicious breakfast, you can always stop by the Mooiplaas picnic spot next door. And don’t forget, the Mopani rest camp is just a stone’s throw away for any emergencies, like running out of ice.

4. Olifants Rest Camp

I wanted to share with you one of my favorite places to visit in South Africa – Olifants Rest Camp. This incredible camp is located in the world-renowned Kruger National Park, an absolute must-see for nature lovers like you and me.

When you come to Olifants Rest Camp, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of the Olifants River, a life force in the area. It’s truly a remarkable sight to behold, and you can even enjoy panoramic vistas of the surrounding bushveld from the camp’s lookout point.

As I’m sure you’re aware, wildlife is abundant in Kruger National Park. Olifants Rest Camp offers you the opportunity to see a vast array of animals, from the mighty elephants that the camp is named after to lions, cheetahs, and giraffes. I’m telling you, there’s this extraordinary camp called Olifants, perched high above the river bearing the same name. Trust me, the views are absolutely stunning! From the lookout point or your cozy bungalow, you get these panoramic vistas of the Olifants River. And guess what? You have a pretty good chance of spotting some majestic creatures, like elephants, buffalos, and hippos! Oh, and the background melody of fish eagles is just enchanting. Keep an eye out for waterbuck too, as they love hanging out on the river’s islands.

Here’s what amazes me: Olifants is in this unique zone where two different kinds of vegetation collide. Up north, you’ll find mopane veld, which is fantastic for wildlife to take cover. But if you head south, you’ll stumble upon these vast plains, where it’s super easy to spot dots of buffalo, giraffe, and kudu roaming freely.

And let me tell you about the best huts there. They’re the ones on the outskirts, offering the most incredible views. I mean, give me a modest bungalow with a view over a fancy one any day! You won’t regret it.

5. Tamboti Tented Camp

When you visit Tamboti Tented Camp in Kruger National Park, you’ll immediately notice the beautiful natural vegetation that surrounds the camp. It creates an authentic bush experience, free from any distractions found in busier rest camps. The best part is, it’s also much more private. Located just 5km from Orpen gate, you’ll find a reception and shop nearby.

The safari tents at Tamboti are raised and face the Timbavati river or riverbed, depending on the time of year. There are budget tents available, equipped with a private deck, fridge, and braai area. For those seeking a little more luxury, there are ten semi-luxury safari tents with ensuite bathrooms, kitchenettes, decks, and braai areas. However, do keep in mind that Tamboti can get quite cold in winter, especially along the river. I once had to resort to sleeping in my socks and shoes to stay warm. But fear not, because spring and autumn offer a much more pleasant temperature.

When it comes to popular destinations in Kruger National Park, there are a few spots that stand out from the rest. Some of the favorites include Satara, Balule satellite camp, Shingwedzi, Biyamiti, and Orpen rest camp. These places are well-known and highly regarded by visitors.

Private camps and Greater Kruger

Aside from the regular camps within the park, there are also private concessions and commercial camps that are highly esteemed by visitors. Additionally, there are the camps and lodges in the surrounding reserves that make up greater Kruger. These places are known for their luxurious accommodations and exclusive experiences.

When it comes to greater Kruger, the choices are endless. Personally, I prefer private and exclusive safari experiences. That’s why my top recommendations are Pungwe Safari camp in the Manyeleti reserve, Nkelenga self-catering camp in Thornybush, and Klaserie Drift in the Klaserie private nature reserve.

This location is particularly beneficial for the Mdluli community living outside the park. With its 50 safari tents, Mdluli offers a luxurious yet affordable option for visitors to Kruger.

A unique feature of Mdluli is its granite rock formations, which can only be found in this part of the park. Guests have the opportunity to hike up to the granite viewpoint and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Kruger landscape.

It comfortably accommodates up to 10 people (or 12 if you don’t mind sharing a loft with four kids), making it an ideal spot for reconnecting with friends and family in the heart of the bush.

At Thornybush Nkelenga, you’ll find three charming meru-style tents, each designed to sleep two people. In addition to that, there’s a spacious main house with a loft that can comfortably accommodate four to six people. Inside the main house, you’ll find a small kitchen, a large dining room table (perfect for playing board games), and a cozy lounge area. Surrounding the camp, you’ll find beautiful fever trees, some of which tower above the lush lawn and the inviting swimming pool. From the camp, you’ll have stunning views of a private dam, where elephants frequently come to drink.

During your stay at Thornybush Nkelenga, the friendly staff will take care of your every need. They visit every day to clean the camp and light the evening fire, ensuring that you can just relax and enjoy your time.
