Hey there! So I was on a mission to find the absolute best places to stay in the beautiful Lowveld region of South Africa. And let me tell you, I’ve found some absolute gems! I visited 39 of the highest-rated accommodations in White River and Hazyview, using TripAdvisor as my trusty guide. I wanted to make sure I had the most reliable information to share with you.
After careful inspection and consideration, I came up with a final list of 13 amazing places to stay. These accommodations truly stood out from the rest, and I know you’ll love them just as much as I did. You won’t find a more tried-and-tested guide to the best places to stay in the incredible Lowveld. And to make it even better, I’ve included some stunning images taken by Teagan Cunniffe, so you can see for yourself just how remarkable these places are.
Why you should visit the Lowveld
- Now, when many people think of the Lowveld, they immediately think of Kruger National Park. And while Kruger is fantastic, I’ve got some insider info for you. The Lowveld has so much more to offer than just the park! In fact, if you zoom right into the park, you might miss out on some truly breathtaking scenery, beautiful gardens, and a whole bunch of fun adventure activities in and around Hazyview, like zip-lining, river rafting, and mountain biking. Trust me, there’s something here for everyone!
- If you’re not really into going on a safari, that’s totally fine. Some people prefer to have their needs taken care of and enjoy a bit of luxury. They like having access to good restaurants and staying in a guest house that’s a bit further away from the Kruger gates. It’s actually a great idea because you can enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere and still make it to the gates by opening time. You can even go on a tour with a local guide in an open-air vehicle.
- There are so many options to choose from when it comes to accommodations. You can stay in a beautiful villa, which is one of the best experiences you can have in the country. Or you can opt for a traditional thatched rondavel on the riverbanks. No matter what you choose, you’ll find great value and it will only take you about three and a half hours to get there from Joburg.
The trees in this place are absolutely amazing! You should get a good guide to Lowveld trees and have a blast trying to identify all the different kinds, like leadwoods and jackalberries, tamboties and fever trees, pod mahogany and wild teak. It’s so satisfying when you spot those coral trees in full bloom. By the way, if you haven’t been yet, you should definitely check out the Lowveld National Botanical Garden. It’s incredible!
Now, let me tell you about the best self-catering option I found in this wonderful garden.
Number 1 on my list is Lyttle Irving. According to TripAdvisor, it’s ranked number 8 out of 15 specialty lodgings in White River. So you know it’s good.
Welcome to Lyttle Irving! It’s the best bargain for a self-catering stay in a stunning garden.
I’m located on the outskirts of White River, surrounded by a plant nursery. I’ve taken an old stable block and transformed it into four cozy self-catering units. The way they’ve been designed ensures that you’ll have plenty of privacy, but the real magic happens in the garden.
Belinda McLintock, our amazing horticulturist, has truly outdone herself. She’s created a garden that will transport you to the French countryside. You’ll find yourself surrounded by fragrant borders and charming pathways. And let me tell you about the most enchanting pathway of all – it leads you to a beautiful dam filled with koi fish. You’ll spot white-faced and yellow-billed ducks, as well as pied and giant kingfishers and Egyptian geese. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a sundowner.
Now, I have to be honest with you – we don’t have a pool. That’s the only downside. But don’t let that stop you from experiencing the tranquility and beauty of Lyttle Irving. Come and stay with us and immerse yourself in the wonders of our garden oasis.
My tip for you: There are four options to choose from when it comes to picking a room at this guest lodge. You can choose between two family units that can sleep four people, a honeymoon suite, or a twin room. All of them are great, but my personal favorite is the Family Cottage Three because it has a lovely little garden.
The price: It costs R320 per person and R120 per child.
How to get in touch: You can contact them at lyttleirving.co.za
The top country-style guest lodge
2. Rissington Inn
According to TripAdvisor, this lodge is ranked number 2 out of 42 for Specialty Lodging in Hazyview
Rissington Inn. The best guest lodge with a country-style.
This beautiful thatched farmhouse has always been a popular destination in the Lowveld. It’s a delight to come back and see how this old lady continues to evolve. Now, they have 16 rooms that offer great comfort. Although the size may vary, each room has its own entrance and outdoor seating area. Some of these rooms are purpose-built thatched units located in the gardens. The food is delicious and hearty, especially their breakfast which is a generous spread that even includes Rissington’s famous fillet steak. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, and their four-hectare garden is just stunning, filled with plenty of trees unique to the Lowveld region. The views are fantastic, and the location is convenient as it’s just a 10-minute drive to Kruger National Park. The best part is that all this comes at a very affordable price. If you’re lucky, you might find the owner, Chris Harvie, at the bar. A well-known storyteller and writer, Chris has a great sense of humor that adds to the charm of this place.
Room tip: Every room in this hotel is fantastic. You can go for the spacious Superior or Deluxe rooms, which can easily accommodate a family of four. However, if you value privacy, I recommend choosing the two-bedroom Pumalanga Suite or one of the two Hillside Suites, both offering breathtaking views and access to a shared pool.
Cost: The prices start from R1000 for a double room with breakfast included. If you prefer more space, the two-bedroom Pumalanga Suite is available starting from R1230.
Contact: If you would like to make a reservation, visit rissington.co.za.
Most romantic splurge
3. Summerfields Rose Retreat & Spa
This hotel is rated as the number one hotel in Hazyview on TripAdvisor.
Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa. It might be a bit pricey, but let me tell you, it’s the perfect spot to bring back that spark in your relationship or celebrate a special occasion in style.
When my husband and I were searching for a new property in the lovely area of Lowveld, we had different ideas in mind. I wanted a farm where I could grow beautiful roses, while my husband dreamed of planting macadamias, litchis, and granadillas. However, the moment we laid eyes on our 40-hectare property with a stunning river flowing through it, our plans took a different turn. The natural beauty of the surroundings inspired a new passion within us.
After spending some time planting trees and creating the most marvelous rose garden, we decided to build 12 luxurious riverside tents amidst the shade of jackalberry and tambotie trees. We chose canvas as the material for the tents because it allows our guests to truly connect with their environment. The gentle sound of the river flowing nearby serves as a soothing soundtrack to your stay. And don’t worry, we made sure to include all the modern comforts you could wish for, like air conditioning and Wi-Fi.
The beauty of the location is perfectly complemented by the exquisite decor and design of the tents. But here’s a little secret: there’s another element that makes Summerfields truly magical. Fresh roses are everywhere! Their fragrant presence adds to the already decadent and romantic atmosphere that fills the air at our retreat.
Natia, our talented daughter, used to work in renowned restaurants like The Test Kitchen and Terroir. And now, she’s in charge of the two restaurants we have on-site. Believe me when I say that you’re in for a treat with the food. A lot of the ingredients come straight from Natia’s own organic garden. We spare no expense to make your dining experience unforgettable.
Yes, I know Summerfields Rose Retreat and Spa might not be the most budget-friendly option out there. But if you’re looking to make a big commitment and pop that all-important question to your loved one, or if you simply want to reignite that flame of romance, I can assure you that this place is worth every penny. And, best of all, it’s only 12 kilometers away from Phabeni Gate.
Room tip: Want something different from a canvas tent? Try booking the honeymoon cabin.
Price: Starting at R2690 per person for bed and breakfast, and R2995 per person for dinner, bed, and breakfast. No children under the age of 12 allowed.
Contact: Visit summerfields.co.za for more information.

Looking for the best bed and breakfast in Hazyview? Look no further than Ashbourne Country Escape. With its stunning surroundings and excellent service, it’s no wonder they’re ranked number 3 on TripAdvisor.
When I walked into Ashbourne Country Escape, I felt an incredible rush of excitement. This place is truly something special. Its location alone is enough to take your breath away. It sits high on a beautiful hillside, surrounded by a rich forest, and offers stunning views of the peaceful Sabi River Valley. I was immediately drawn to its charm.
Ashbourne Country Escape is a bed and breakfast that offers a cozy and intimate experience. With only five rooms available, each with direct access to the courtyard or overlooking it, you’ll feel like you have this place all to yourself. The courtyard is spacious and inviting, with plenty of shaded seating and a delightful pool that adds to the tranquility of the setting.
The decor at Ashbourne Country Escape is simple yet elegant. The furniture is white, the ceilings are made of reed, and the floors are cool oxide. This uncluttered style creates a sense of calm and relaxation, allowing you to truly unwind and escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
What truly sets Ashbourne Country Escape apart is its wonderful hosts, Rob and Dawne Ashbourne. Both retired farmers and lovers of nature, they are the epitome of warm and welcoming hosts. They are genuinely interested in their guests and have a wealth of knowledge about the local area. Their presence adds an extra layer of charm to this already incredible place.
One of the things I loved about Ashbourne Country Escape is the option to have food delivered from local restaurants. If you don’t feel like going out, you can simply order dinner in and enjoy it in the comfort of your own room. Alternatively, you can choose to book one of the two self-catering units, which are beautifully designed and offer all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay.
If you do decide to venture out, you’ll find that Hazyview’s restaurants are just a short 10-minute drive away. And for those looking to explore the incredible Kruger National Park, the Phabeni Gate is only 20 minutes from Ashbourne Country Escape. This makes it an ideal base for those wanting to experience the wonders of the park.
A stay at Ashbourne Country Escape is truly an escape from the ordinary. Its breathtaking location, intimate setting, and warm hospitality make it the perfect place to relax, recharge, and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re a nature lover, a food enthusiast, or simply in need of a peaceful getaway, Ashbourne Country Escape has something for everyone.
Here’s a tip: All the rooms in this place are great, but the Balcony Room upstairs is particularly fantastic because of its beautiful views. The two self-catering cottages are equally amazing, and you can still enjoy a delicious breakfast for R120 per person.
As for the cost, a double room with bed and breakfast is R1360. If you’re on your honeymoon, you can stay in a special cottage for R980 per night. And if you’re traveling with family, there’s a two-bedroom cottage available for R1500 per night. This cottage can sleep four adults and four children on sleeper couches, but meals are not included in the price.

My Top Pick for a Safari Base
8. Seringa Lodge
Rated No. 5 out of 33 B&B/Inns in White River on Tripadvisor
Seringa has gained quite a reputation for its outstanding food. This beautiful farmhouse, located in White River, is surrounded by a lush two-hectare garden. In 2004, Cecilia and Roger Briggs transformed it into a charming eight-bedroom lodge.
Cecilia, originally from Sweden, has honed her culinary skills through years of experience in the United States and Europe. Her expertise in the kitchen has earned her accolades, making the dining experience at Seringa truly exceptional. Roger, on the other hand, is a South African-born guide and bird enthusiast. With his extensive knowledge of the Okavango Delta and his passion for wildlife, he offers private tours in his open-air game vehicle, complete with elevated seats for optimal viewing. If golf is your passion, Roger is well-versed in the local courses and can provide insight and recommendations.
After an eventful day exploring the wonders of Kruger National Park or indulging in a round of golf, returning to Seringa is a true delight. The large thatched outdoor terrace offers breathtaking views of the garden and pool. As the sun sets, the terrace becomes a romantic haven, illuminated by the soft glow of flickering paraffin lanterns on the coffee tables.
My Recommendation: I discovered two fantastic rooms that I absolutely loved during my stay at the lodge. Rooms 7 and 8 are located in a charming bungalow surrounded by a beautiful garden. What I really appreciated about these rooms is that they have their own private entrances and a connecting door between them, making them perfect for families.
Pricing: The cost for a double room with breakfast included is R1120. For children under the age of 17, it’s only R190 per person. And the best part? Children two years old and younger stay for free!
