As I stand here and take in the majestic view, I can’t help but be in awe of the sheer size and scope of Gariep Dam. Anyway, let’s talk about our journey from the Free State to the Eastern Cape. If we’re lucky, we might even make it all the way to the Northern Cape if the dam is overflowing,’ Wikus Wiese says with a laugh as he guides our boat through the water. The surface is so calm that it looks like thick, syrupy liquid. Wiese, who organizes boat tours, explains that what we see in front of us is just a small portion of the dam. When it’s full, Gariep Dam covers a massive 374 square kilometers, making it the biggest dam in South Africa. It provides water to most of the southern Free State and Eastern Cape regions.

Approaching the towering 88-meter dam wall, I can’t help but feel like a tiny speck next to this awe-inspiring, almost futuristic structure. Back in 1972, when the dam was completed, it cost a total of around R300,000. Can you believe that? These days, a project like this would easily run up a bill of about R3.5 billion. It’s mind-boggling how costs have skyrocketed.

In January 2011, we were blessed with abundant rainfall in the catchment area, leading to the dam filling up to an unbelievable 125 percent. As if that wasn’t enough, it was overflowing by a whopping four meters for a full three months. Can you imagine the sheer volume of water? Every second, it had the power to fill not just one, but five Olympic-sized swimming pools. Now that’s something to wrap your head around.

As we slowly make our way back to the shore, I can’t help but fix my gaze on the water, reaching up high on the banks. It’s a sight that makes me yearn for a little piece of it, especially considering the water crisis in Cape Town. If only I could bring some of this abundance back home to help relieve the parched city.

As I make my way towards my car, I can’t help but notice the serenity that engulfs the Gariep, A Forever Resort. It’s so quiet, it feels like everyone is taking an afternoon nap. I guess it’s no wonder why watersport enthusiasts and nature lovers are drawn to this place, seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

One of the main attractions here is the 165-kilometre route that winds its way around the dam and through the Gariep Dam Nature Reserve. It’s a magnet for those who yearn to catch a glimpse of majestic wildlife like springbok and black wildebeest. The interesting thing about this area is that, at first glance, it appears to offer very little beyond vast stretches of flat, brown land and a few remote settlements.

But here’s the secret – if you take the time to explore this route, if you pause and really look around, you’ll discover hidden wonders lurking in the scrub. From the tiniest marvels to grand spectacles, they’re all waiting to be found. And as you continue on this captivating journey, you’ll be amazed to realize that in just a few minutes, you’ll have crossed three provinces. Now, how incredible is that?

When it comes to fishing in the Gariep Dam, there’s something for everyone. You can cast your line and try your luck at catching yellowfish, tilapia, mudfish, and more. It’s a fishing paradise!

My journey begins in the Free State area of the reserve, where the land used to be home to stock farms. Legend has it that some of the old farm buildings disappeared under the water when the dam was created. Before I start my fishing adventure, I stop by Rustiq Pub and Grill for a delicious lunch. As I look around, I notice that most of the cars parked outside have their windows open. It’s a reminder that I’m in a safe place, but I still make sure to lock my car doors – old habits die hard!

I meet Nic du Toit, a long-time resident of Gariep and a well-respected figure in the community. He’s been here for 20 years and knows everything there is to know about the area. His son, Hentie, owns the pub and convinces me to try a Klippies and Coke – a local favorite. As we enjoy our drinks, Nic tells me that Gariep is a hidden gem that many people are already aware of. He points out a group of Australians who have just walked into the restaurant, immediately drawn to the rugby game on TV. There’s also a young couple who have stopped by for lunch. “Some of the families here have generations of history tied to the dam,” says Nic. “They talk proudly about their fathers and grandfathers who helped build it.” He loves the sense of community and the wide range of activities that Gariep offers. From hang gliding to fishing, there’s always something exciting to do.

The dam wall is made of a massive amount of concrete, approximately 1.73 million cubic meters. It’s a sight to behold. As I approach the dam wall, I notice that the road leading to it is smooth and suitable for all types of vehicles. It’s great to know that accessibility is prioritized here. Today, I’m accompanied by three doctors from Bloemfontein, and our knowledgeable guide, Gert Isaks, who has been guiding visitors at this site for over 16 years, is giving us a safety briefing before we begin our adventure.

Gert casually mentions that we’ll be walking 13 kilometers during this trip, and as he says that, I quickly activate the pedometer app on my phone. I’m excited to find out how many steps I’ll be taking today. Maybe I’ll even achieve platinum status! With high spirits, we start our journey. As we enter the dam wall, we are greeted by a network of tunnels stretching ahead of us. The sound of water slapping against the concrete fills the air, and I can’t help but hold my breath in anticipation.

I remind myself to stay calm and focused as we make our way through the narrow, dimly lit passages. The dim lighting adds an air of mystery to the experience. With each step, I hear my own footsteps echoing in the tunnels, creating a mesmerizing rhythm. Despite some fleeting thoughts of leaks or cracks, I push them aside and immerse myself in the unique atmosphere of this incredible structure. The dam wall stands tall and solid, reassuring me of its strength and stability.

Two hours later, we gather in a control room and Gert shows us how, with a simple push of a button, the sluices open and a rushing column of water bursts forth. The water droplets splash against my face, creating a refreshing sensation, and the sound is like thunder in my ears. The power and speed at which the water is released amazes me, and I find myself in awe of the engineers who designed and built this massive and precise structure. Gert closes the sluices, and I can’t help but feel a sense of admiration for what I have just witnessed. That night, I climb into bed early, my mind filled with vivid images of water.

Waking up early the next morning, I find myself determined to witness the sunrise over the dam. Sitting in my car near the wall, I gaze at the still water and the fluffy clouds reflecting on its surface. As the sun gradually emerges, it paints the water in beautiful hues of blue and brown. It’s a serene moment, far from the noise of the city, observing nature awaken. With the car started, I make my way towards the Oviston tunnel, located not far from Oviston Nature Reserve in the Eastern Cape.

Beforehand, I had come across some information about this tunnel, and my curiosity pushes me to see it firsthand. Apparently, it’s quite an impressive structure that can even accommodate a double-decker bus. Stretching for an astonishing 73 kilometers, all underground, I can only imagine the manual labor that went into its construction back in 1966. It serves as a reminder of how much technology has evolved over the years. It also makes me ponder the significance of water, a vital resource for humanity throughout history.

The tunnel’s purpose is to supply water to the Fish River, which then flows through Cradock and makes its way to Kirkwood and the citrus valleys of the Eastern Cape. As an essential component of the country’s water-distribution network, it plays a crucial role in ensuring a steady water supply to these regions. It’s remarkable how interconnected our systems are, and how vital it is to manage and distribute water effectively.

As I arrive at Oviston Nature Reserve, my trusty car decides to give up on me. No matter how hard I try to persuade it, it refuses to navigate the bumpy road filled with rocks and holes. So, I make my way to the charming farming town of Bethulie, which apparently has changed its name countless times in the past. Along the way, I drive across the breathtaking Hennie Steyn Bridge, a magnificent arched structure that stretches over one kilometer and holds the distinction of being the longest bridge in the entire country. Below, the powerful Orange River rushes towards Gariep Dam.

A leisurely drive through the town brings me to Voortrekker Street, where I decide to stop and explore the Pellissier House Museum. Originally built in 1834, this historic house belonged to Reverend Jean-Pierre Pellissier, a French missionary. Nowadays, it has been transformed into a local museum, welcoming visitors with a fascinating glimpse into the living conditions of the 1800s. The museum also sheds light on the nearby concentration camp that was established during the Anglo-Boer War.

The Hennie Steyn Bridge holds the distinction of being the longest road-and-rail structure in the country. It serves as the vital link that connects the Eastern Cape with the Free State. This remarkable bridge showcases the ingenuity and engineering prowess of our nation.

The next morning, I wake up bright and early. When I look out of my hotel window, I’m greeted with the stunning sight of the dam, shimmering like a mirror. As I sip my coffee and take in the view, I can’t help but feel like Gariep was designed to challenge me. It tested my off-road driving skills, my ability to navigate in areas with spotty phone reception, and my ability to connect the dots between water, towns, nature, and people. It even challenged me to appreciate the unique combination of Klippies and Coke.

This place is filled with an electrifying energy, which I believe comes from the convergence of human civilization and untouched nature. The dam wall stands tall over the surrounding bush like a magnificent monument. I’m already planning to return to Gariep, but this time with a group of friends and a tougher car to accompany me. However, I’ll probably avoid coming during winter, as temperatures can drop below freezing at night. Although, it would be a shame to miss the breathtaking sight of the winter sun setting, casting a warm golden glow on the dam wall.

The Powerhouse of Gariep

Gariep Dam is not only the biggest water reservoir in the country, but it also functions as a hydroelectric power station. I mean, think about it. Just like those plants that use coal, hydroelectric stations use the power of rushing water to create electricity. It’s pretty cool, right? Here’s how it works: the water spins a turbine, which is connected to a metal shaft in an electric generator. And voila! You’ve got electricity flowing. At Eskom’s Gariep Hydroelectric Power Station, they’ve got four turbines that can generate a whopping 360 megawatts of electricity. That’s enough juice to power around 240,000 homes. Pretty impressive, huh?
