When I think about technology, there is one question that always comes to mind: how has it impacted our lives? The answer is not always straightforward. On one hand, technology has provided us with countless benefits and opportunities. It has made our lives easier, our communication faster, and our access to information instantaneous. It has allowed us to connect with people from all over the world, to learn new skills, and to expand our horizons.
But on the other hand, technology has also presented us with its fair share of challenges. It can be overwhelming, distracting, and even addictive. It can disconnect us from the present moment and hinder our ability to truly connect with others. It has led to the rise of cyberbullying, invasion of privacy, and a constant need for validation through social media.
So, when it comes to technology, how do we strike a balance? How do we navigate this complex and ever-evolving landscape while still staying true to ourselves?
One way is by understanding the importance of mindful and intentional technology use. This means being aware of how we are using technology, why we are using it, and what impact it is having on our well-being. It means taking breaks from technology, setting boundaries, and being present in the moment. It means using technology as a tool for connection, learning, and growth, rather than as a source of distraction or validation.
Another way is by recognizing that technology is not inherently good or bad. It is neutral, and it is up to us to determine how we want to use it. We have the power to shape our relationship with technology and to create a healthy balance between the virtual and the real world.
So, the next time you find yourself reaching for your phone or getting lost in the online world, take a moment to pause and reflect. Ask yourself: Is this serving me? Is this bringing me closer to my goals and values? Is this enhancing my life or detracting from it?
Remember, technology is a tool that we can wield to our advantage. It has the potential to enrich our lives and broaden our horizons, but only if we approach it with intention, awareness, and a sense of balance.
Have you ever wondered how well three typical luxury SUVs can handle off-road conditions? I know I have. Well, get ready to find out as I take you on an epic adventure across 900km of rugged terrain, full of dust, mud, and elevation changes of up to 1400m.
As I stood at the summit, a thought crossed my mind: “I wonder if I can spot my house from here?” But let’s be honest, no one ever says that.
Hey there, I’m Ray Leathern, and I’ve got a story to share with you today. Join me as we embark on a thrilling journey that will take us to the breathtaking Ouberg Pass in the Northern Cape.
After being cooped up at home for what feels like forever due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was itching for an escape. I craved the open road, the wind in my hair, and the sense of freedom that only comes from exploring the great outdoors.
So, I hopped into my car and set off on a self-drive adventure, leaving the confines of my four walls behind. Destination: Ouberg Pass.
Located in the magnificent Northern Cape, Ouberg Pass is nothing short of awe-inspiring. It’s a place where nature’s raw beauty meets the spirit of adventure. As you wind your way up the pass, the world around you transforms into a panorama of majestic landscapes and jaw-dropping vistas.
As I ascended higher and higher, my excitement grew. Each twist and turn revealed a new hidden gem, a new vision to behold. The rugged cliffs seemed to whisper tales of ancient times, and the vast plains stretched out before me like an endless sea of possibility.
But it wasn’t just the views that captured my heart. The Ouberg Pass is also a playground for thrill-seekers and adrenaline junkies. From hiking and mountain biking to off-road driving, there’s something for everyone here. I couldn’t resist the allure of the unknown, so I strapped on my boots and explored the trails that crisscrossed the landscape.
Every step I took, every pedal I pushed, filled me with a sense of exhilaration. I felt like I was part of something bigger, something grander than myself. The sheer magnitude of the surroundings reminded me of how insignificant my worries and troubles were in the grand scheme of things.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky with hues of gold and pink, I found a quiet spot to sit and reflect. In that moment of stillness, surrounded by nature’s masterpiece, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to witness such beauty, gratitude for the resilience and adaptability of the human spirit, and gratitude for the simple joys that life has to offer.
So, my friends, if you find yourself yearning for adventure, for a change of scenery, I highly recommend setting your sights on Ouberg Pass. Let it be your escape, your sanctuary, your personal slice of paradise. Trust me, the memories you make along the way will be worth every twist and turn.
Here I am, on a wild expedition in the middle of nowhere. Dust devils whirl and dance across the earth as our convoy pushes forward. The Tankwa Karoo stretches out before us, while storm clouds loom ominously in the distant west. To the east, the land is dry and barren, with the heat creating beautiful layers of clouds in the sky. And right in the heart of it all, you’ll find us – three friends ready to embrace this harsh but captivating landscape.
I can’t help but think of the intrepid explorer John McDouall Stuart, who dared to cross the vast expanse of Australia back in the 1800s. Even with all the modern comforts we have now, it’s hard to imagine the challenges he faced on horseback. When he finally reached the center of the country, he called it “the very climax of desolation.” I can’t help but feel a similar sense of awe as I traverse the R355, the road that connects Ceres with Calvinia, crossing the provincial boundary into the Northern Cape.
Why did I embark on this journey? I mean, most expeditions like McDouall Stuart’s had some kind of practical goal – like finding a route for a telegraph pole, or discovering gold. But after being cooped up for months due to Covid-19, I needed a change of scenery. So, I decided to go on a self-drive adventure to the stunning Ouberg Pass in the Northern Cape, followed by a cozy night in Sutherland.
Of course, there was another reason for this trip. I wanted to see how people would travel in a world after lockdown. And while I was at it, I figured I could also figure out the best vehicle for touring.
Par for the course for a windmill in these parts.
Leaving the town of Ceres behind, we traded smooth roads for bumpy gravel. The middle of the road was particularly treacherous, threatening to damage our tires if we strayed off course. As we drove along the R355, the landscape became more barren and desolate. It felt like we were leaving Earth behind, and even cell phone reception disappeared. The Tankwa Karoo is irresistible; its emptiness is captivating, and its vastness is awe-inspiring. This province has few residents and hardly any tourists, which is a dream come true in 2020.
The beauty of driving through vast stretches of emptiness for a long time is that when you finally come across something – anything at all – you get incredibly excited about it. After cruising over countless kilometers of gravel, by mid-afternoon, I saw the sign for Middelpos/Sutherland (R354) and Tankwa Karoo National Park. From there, it was another 90 kilometers of gravel racing past Jakkalsfontein before the steep climb up Ouberg Pass began. We had been chasing the sun all afternoon, hoping to capture the magical hour at the top of the pass, and we knew it was going to be tight. There’s nothing quite like the suspense of wondering whether or not you’ll make it to keep your attention sharp.
All three vehicles handled the challenging Ouberg Pass with ease – even when we didn’t.
The road to the summit was tough, and we didn’t want to rush through it in our expensive vehicles. The surface was covered in hard, sunbaked dirt, making the steering wheel twist and turn in our hands. Some sections were muddy and unstable from previous snowfalls. And, of course, there was the constant threat of sharp rocks that could destroy our pricey tires.
As I drove through the rugged terrain, I couldn’t help but marvel at the incredible capabilities of our vehicles. The state-of-the-art four-wheel-drive and suspension systems effortlessly adapted to the challenging conditions, making our journey a breeze. We had been striving towards one specific destination, and finally, the moment arrived. As we emerged from the dark shadows of the Roggeveld Mountains, the summit of the Karoo plateau bathed in golden sunlight. It felt like a dream come true.
The Ouberg Pass, perched atop the plateau, seemed almost impossibly remote. In the vast emptiness that stretched out before us, it stood as a beacon of awe-inspiring beauty. We found a suitable spot to park our dust-covered vehicles and eagerly stepped out. Standing at the edge, we tried to capture the sheer magnitude of the Tankwa Karoo valley below. It was an experience that words could hardly do justice to.
Our once-pristine white vehicles were now adorned with a coat of beige-brown dust and mud, a testament to our journey’s challenges. Rather than appearing unkempt, this transformation felt like a badge of honor, showing the world that we had truly ventured into the wild.
The final assessment of the vehicles
When it came to our little adventure through the rugged terrain of the Tankwa, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 400d 4Matic stood out. With its powerful V6 diesel engine, this vehicle was a beast, taking us on our safari with style and swagger. However, its 21-inch wheels and tires didn’t fare well against the harshness of the landscape.
On the other hand, the Volvo XC90 D5 R-Design proved to be the safe and sensible option. As a typical Swede, it handled the rough roads of Ouberg with ease, showcasing impressive wheel travel and off-road agility. But, it did come with its fair share of drama, constantly alerting us about low tire pressure.
When I first heard the name, Volkswagen Touareg V6 TDI Executive, I couldn’t help but think that it had too many vowels. And let’s not forget the Black Style Package, which, if I’m honest, looks a bit strange with its off-the-shelf grille. And don’t even get me started on the digital infotainment system – it’s like trying to decipher a secret code! But despite these quirks, the Touareg proved itself to be a force to be reckoned with on our journey.
Grinning from ear to ear at Tankwa Padstal
When you’re traveling and feeling tired, there’s one place that you absolutely have to stop at – the famous Tankwa Padstal. It’s known as ‘a little bit of everything and a lot of something in the middle of nowhere,’ and it’s gotten quite the reputation on social media. From afar, you can already tell that this road-side farm stall is like an oasis, and once you get closer, you’ll be blown away by what it has to offer. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out on their incredible moer-koffie and roosterkoek burgers – they’re a fan-favorite for a reason.
When I arrived, I was warmly greeted by the owner, Hein Lange. He had a friendly smile on his face and even brought out two frozen sheep’s heads. Now, you might be wondering why he had those, and I wondered the same thing. It turns out he was showing me the lengths he goes to make sure his products are top-notch. He even goes as far as brushing the sheep’s teeth to make sure they look their best. Talk about dedication!
Hein and his wife established the Tankwa Padstal back in 2011, and over a cup of coffee, he shared with me how it has become a true beacon for the community, especially during these challenging times of the coronavirus. You see, most schools offer online classes now, but what about the kids in the outlying communities? In the Tankwa, there’s no access to over-the-air schools, so Hein and his wife came up with a brilliant solution – they built a library. It’s a place where kids can come to learn, explore, and expand their horizons.
Stay Here
Hey, have you ever wondered why it’s so important to stay in the present moment? It may sound simple, but it’s a concept that holds so much power. Let’s dive in and explore why staying in the here and now can make such a difference in our lives.
First of all, staying present allows us to fully experience what’s happening around us. When I’m completely focused on the present, I notice the little details that I would have otherwise missed. The way the sun feels on my skin, the smell of freshly brewed coffee, the sound of laughter in the air. These small moments add richness and joy to our lives, and we miss out on them when we’re constantly lost in our thoughts.
Staying present also helps us connect with others on a deeper level. When I’m fully engaged in a conversation, listening attentively and responding genuinely, I can truly understand and empathize with the person in front of me. It’s a powerful feeling to be able to connect with someone and make them feel heard and understood. And the best part is, when I stay present, I get to enjoy these meaningful connections more often.
Moreover, staying in the present moment can help alleviate stress and anxiety. When I catch myself getting caught up in worries about the future or regrets about the past, I remind myself to come back to the here and now. I take a few deep breaths, grounding myself in the present, and suddenly, the weight on my shoulders feels a little lighter. It’s like a reset button for my mind, calming my racing thoughts and allowing me to find peace in the present moment.
It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, always thinking about what’s next and rarely taking a moment to pause and appreciate what’s happening right now. But when we make a conscious effort to stay in the present, we open ourselves up to a world of beauty, connection, and peace. So, next time you find your mind wandering, remember to come back to the present moment. You might be surprised by what you find.
