Discover the Thrilling Adventure of Kloofing in South Africa

Have you ever heard of kloofing? It’s an exhilarating extreme sport that will take you on an unforgettable journey through the stunning South African mountains. Picture this: following a watercourse, scrambling down cliffs and waterfalls, and even swimming through deep pools. It’s an adrenaline rush like no other!

Exploring Western Cape

Riviersonderend and Suicide Gorges

When it comes to exploring kloofs in the Western Cape, you won’t find any better than the ones in Hottentots Holland Nature Reserve. They’re not only well-known but also easy to access. If you’re a beginner, a great place to start is the stunning Riviersonderend Gorge Trail. This seven-hour route begins near the main Boland Hiking Trail. Don’t worry, there’s no need for abseiling, and the highest jump you have to make is just seven meters. Although, I must admit, that can seem pretty high if you’ve never done it before.

If you’re up for an adventure, the nearby Suicide Gorge is the place to be. It’s not for the faint of heart, but if you’re experienced and courageous, it’s an exhilarating experience. The journey begins with a two-hour hike up the mountains, where you’ll be greeted with the option of sliding down a waterfall. From there, get ready for a thrilling descent filled with jumps (the highest one is a whopping 14 meters!) and refreshing swims. Plan for about nine hours to complete this adrenaline-fueled challenge.

But if you’re looking for an even greater test of your bravery, consider taking on the Riviersonderend Gorge. This is not for the weak-willed, as it involves conquering Suicide Gorge and then making the trek back up the Riviersonderend Gorge. It’s a grueling journey that will push you to your limits, but the sense of accomplishment is unparalleled. You can expect to spend around 12 hours on this intense adventure.

When it comes to exploring the kloofs, it’s important to take into account the conditions before setting out. You don’t want to be caught off guard by a flash flood or sudden storm. To ensure your safety, the kloofs are open from 1 November to 30 April. Before embarking on your adventure, make sure to check the current conditions.

If you’re looking for a guided trip, there are a few options available. One option is Venture Forth International, which offers guided trips for R800 per person, including lunch. Another option is Frixion Adventures, which also provides guided trips for R700 per person, including lunch. Both of these companies can offer a thrilling experience while ensuring your safety.

To obtain permits for your kloof adventure, you can contact CapeNature at 021-483-0190 or visit their website at www.capenature.co.za. The cost of a permit is R160, or if you have a Wild Card, it’s only R120.

North West

Grootkloof

Grootkloof is a popular choice for those seeking an exciting six-hour adventure. This journey will push your limits as it involves waterfall abseils and even some thrilling bum slides. Additionally, you can expect to conquer compulsory two-meter jumps and swims. It’s a taxing experience, but the adrenaline rush is worth it.

The adventure begins with an easy hike up the open slopes of the breathtaking Magaliesberg range. You’ll then make your way into the kloof, where you’ll have the chance to test your abseiling skills. Don’t worry, though – the first big challenge, a 20-meter waterfall abseil, is only a third of the way down. Once you conquer that, the rest of the day is a piece of cake. Please note that only members of the Mountain Club of South Africa are allowed individual access. If you’re not a member, don’t worry. You can join a guided trip with Mountain Guide. For a group of four or more people, it costs R650 per person and includes lunch. To book your trip, call 082-652-1490 or visit www.mountainguide.co.za.

Ready for an exhilarating adventure? Put on your hiking boots and get ready to explore the stunning Injasuti Valley in the majestic Drakensberg mountains. This thrilling kloofing trip is available as a half-day or full-day experience, perfect for those seeking a moderate challenge.

The adventure begins with a challenging hike, testing your endurance as you ascend through the valley. But don’t worry, the hard work is worth it. Once you reach the top, get ready for some excitement as you navigate through the rocky terrain, hopping from boulder to boulder and even abseiling down cascading waterfalls ranging from five to 25 meters.

If you’re looking for a guided kloofing experience, Four Rivers Rafting has got you covered.
