Let me tell you about my adventure in KwaZulu-Natal, searching for the tradition of storytelling. It all started when I embarked on a journey to uncover the magic of storytelling for our magazine’s June 2015 issue. While the full story is in the magazine, I can share some of what I discovered with you here.
When I was just a child of three or four years old, my twin sister Nandi and I would play on the balcony overlooking the garage. The garage had no door, and from there, we could see the beautiful tropical landscape of Durban. The branches of the trees were laden with lush, dark green leaves, and tucked beneath them were little houses. It was the year 1990, the year Mandela was released from prison. I remember my dad’s eyes filled with hope and joy as he announced, “uMandela uyaphuma” – Mandela is coming out. I didn’t need to ask who Mandela was. His presence filled my heart with excitement and wonder.
When Nelson Mandela was released from prison, it had a profound impact on the entire nation of South Africa. His story resonated deeply with people and sparked a newfound appreciation for the power of storytelling. My own journey into the world of storytelling began in KwaZulu-Natal, a province that holds the beginnings and ends of countless fascinating tales. If you find yourself in this beautiful part of the world, here are some suggestions for things to do and places to visit:
