The Xitsonga folks call it Nkuhlu because it’s filled with Natal Mahogany trees. Those trees are the big shots around here! And get this – Nkuhlu overlooks the Sabie River, which means we can hang out and see hippos and other cool animals chilling by the water. How amazing is that?

2. Nhlanguleni

Plus, if you’re traveling on the S36, this is the only spot where you can take a much-needed break. The site is located around 3 kilometers away from Lugmag Dam.

The veld here might be a bit dry, but you won’t be disappointed with the wildlife. Keep an eye out for some fascinating dwarf mongoose — they always make an appearance at the picnic site!

3. Mlondozi

I’m standing at Mlondozi Dam, just 15 km away from Lower Sabie camp on the S29 road. It’s a stunning spot that offers breathtaking views.

Up here on this hill, I can see the sprawling Mlondozi River and dam, the vast plains below, and the majestic Lebombo Mountains in the distance. It’s a sight to behold!

If you’re lucky, you might spot some Buffalo or Elephant from this elevated vantage point. They often wander in the area, giving you a fantastic wildlife experience.

When it’s time for a break, you can relax at the picnic tables under the thatched umbrellas. The tables are positioned perfectly for a great view and easy photography.

Unfortunately, there’s no shop at the picnic site. However, you can rent skottels if you need them.

4. Makhadzi

Hey there! I know a hidden gem in the Kruger National Park that you’ll absolutely love. It’s called Makhadzi picnic site, and it’s tucked away on H-15, northeast of Letaba Rest Camp.

Makhadzi is a real hidden treasure. It’s situated in a peaceful part of the park, close to the Giryondo border post and not far from Malopenya waterhole. You won’t find many tourists venturing out this way, so if you’re looking for some tranquility, this is the perfect spot for you. Just keep in mind that Makhadzi is currently closed to the public.
