Discover the Five Best Getaways in Plettenberg Bay
When Portuguese explorers first laid eyes on the breathtaking bay known as Plettenberg Bay, they aptly named it Bahia Formosa, meaning “beautiful bay.” Today, thousands of people flock to this coastal paradise for their annual vacations. If you’re planning a trip, here are five remarkable places to consider for your stay.
Uncover the Perfect Accommodations in Plett
1. Grand Café and Rooms
Imagine yourself at the Grand Café and Rooms, a hidden gem nestled amidst the vibrant city of Plett. Situated on the quieter end of the bustling main road, this charming property with its dusty-pink exterior can be easily spotted by its distinctive ivy-covered fences. From its elevated perch, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area.
Welcome to the vibe!Step into a world of quirkiness and charm, where ornate antique furniture and framed French posters blend seamlessly with candelabras, dated photographs, and screed cement floors. This place is bursting with character, missing only a pink feather boa to add to its eclectic atmosphere. As you explore, you’ll notice the bright and airy courtyard, a delightful contrast to the rich and moody hues of the bedrooms and dramatic common areas.
Who will I meet? Here, you’ll encounter an interesting mix of people. European couples often make a stopover for their beach adventures, adding a touch of international flair to the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the hipster crowd from South Africa seeks something out of the ordinary, an experience that goes beyond the standard hotel stay.
What about the rooms?Prepare to be captivated by seven uniquely decorated rooms, each embracing a bohemian boudoir theme with shades of red and deep purple. If you prefer easy access to the pool, opt for a ground-floor room. However, if you want a truly breathtaking view of the ocean, the upstairs rooms are where it’s at. For those in search of ultimate privacy, the Bath House offers a secluded oasis with its very own plunge pool.
Food to Savor
I’m excited to share with you that the Grand Café offers an extensive menu throughout the day. You can start your day with a delicious breakfast, have a fulfilling lunch, or enjoy a delightful dinner. If you decide to stay for dinner, I highly recommend trying the mouth-watering prawn, mussel, courgette, and feta pasta – it’s a true culinary delight.
Unforgettable Experiences
The Grand Café is not only known for its fantastic food but also for its unique highlights. One of the must-do experiences is enjoying a cocktail on the shaded deck while watching the sunset. Trust me, it’s an absolute treat for the senses. And if you really want to pamper yourself, make sure to indulge in a relaxing bath in room six. Picture this – a Victorian freestanding candelabra-lit bath with breathtaking views of the sea. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Things to Keep in Mind
Before you visit, there are a couple of important things to know about the Grand Café. The beds in this beautiful establishment are framed with iron and sit about a meter above the ground. While a step is provided, it could be a little tricky to climb into bed if you’ve had a few too many sundowners. Additionally, please note that the Grand Café has an adult-only policy, so children under 12 are not allowed.

2. The Plettenberg
The location
Perched on a rugged outcrop with a breathtaking view of the Indian Ocean, the magnificent Plettenberg exudes grandeur, its pure white facade standing proudly on both sides of the road’s quiet dead-end.
The atmosphere
While classified as a top-tier destination in The Collection by Liz McGrath, this place emanates a relaxed beach ambiance. The rooms, adorned in serene blues and earthy hues, feature a contemporary design, while the common areas, reminiscent of the seaside, offer a modern touch with vibrant aqua cushions.
The visitors
A diverse blend of locals and international guests, as well as couples and families celebrating special occasions, make their way up the coast to this enchanting retreat.
Welcome to my paradise by the sea! I have 37 rooms here that are absolutely amazing. Each one has a flat-screen TV and air conditioning, so you’ll always be comfortable. But let me tell you, the real showstopper is the view. If you can, make sure to book a room with a sea view. You’ll be able to see the pool and the breathtaking Outeniqua range in the distance. And if that’s not enough, I also have a self-catering villa that can sleep up to six people and a beach house that can accommodate four, both complete with private pools.
Now, let’s talk about the food. I have a restaurant right here on the property called Seafood at the Plettenberg. They serve up a delicious full English breakfast that will give you the perfect start to your day. And for lunch and dinner, you won’t need to go anywhere else. The food here is simply mouthwatering. Not only does it taste incredible, but it looks like a work of art on your plate.
But that’s not all! One of the highlights of staying here is watching the seagulls. They love to line up on the edge of our infinity pool, trying to steal a sip of the cool, crystal-clear water. It’s quite a sight to see. And while you’re swimming in the pool, take a moment to look out towards Keurbooms River. As the tide comes in, you can watch the little islands slowly disappear. It’s truly magical.
Here’s what you need to know:
If you stay in the West Wing (across the road), you’ll have to walk to the main hotel for breakfast and dinner. However, there’s a lunch restaurant and lap pool here, with equally impressive views of the sea.
Oupa Jannie Family Suite
The Oupa Jannie Family Suite:
The Setting:
The main house, which is over a hundred years old, is located high above Plett’s main beach. You can enjoy views of the iconic Beacon Island Resort. The property has several converted buildings that offer self-catering accommodation.
The Vibe:
According to a sign on the front gate, this place belongs to “a free-range boere chick” from Bloubergstrand. The atmosphere here is just as relaxed as the owner, with rustic decorations, old black-and-white photos, and meaningful messages scattered around.

Uncover our hidden gems
Immerse yourself in the rich history of our main house, where you can browse through photographs and other intriguing mementos. Just remember to ask for permission first, as this is also the owner’s residence.
Pay Attention! This place is located on a busy road with a dangerous and steep corner, so be alert when you’re driving there. They also offer other self-catering rooms and cottages as part of Stone Cottage.

4. Soul Arch
The SceneYou might have to do a double take when you first see Soul Arch, as its unusual shape and unconventional building materials can be quite puzzling. From afar, it almost looks like a museum of modern art, perched on a steep corner and overlooking a swampy area and the hills of Robberg.
The AtmosphereSoul Arch is a marvel of eco-friendly architecture, made from recycled wood, glass, and metal. The three-story house forms a U-shape around a swimming pool, a barbecue area, and outdoor seating, all set against a backdrop of lush green grass.
The crowd
Are you looking for the perfect place for your next family vacation or a getaway with friends? Look no further! This place is a favorite among locals who love to come back year after year. You may have even spotted it in some high-end décor magazines, so you know it’s the real deal.
The rooms
When it comes to the rooms, there’s something for everyone. Kids will have a blast in the colorful three-sleeper room, with its triple bunk and a loft play area. Meanwhile, the master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and the third bedroom both open up to a stunning pool deck. And that’s not all – there’s even a rock-climbing wall and an outdoor shower!
The food
You’ll feel right at home in the modern open-plan kitchen, which comes with a separate scullery. It’s perfect for all your self-catering needs, although you won’t find a microwave here. If you don’t feel like cooking, there are plenty of great restaurants to choose from along Plett’s main road and near Central Beach. They’re just a short drive away!
Hey there, let me tell you about this amazing place!
The master bedroom here is something else. It’s got an indoor shower that’s so cool, it feels like you’re outside. Surrounded by glass, you can let the water rain down on you while standing on the wooden floors. It’s pure bliss. Oh, and don’t forget to have a chill session in the hanging egg chair or take a nap on the oversized beanbag in the TV room. It’s the perfect spot to relax.
But hey, before you get too excited, there are a few things you need to know. First, the pool doesn’t have a fence, so if you have really young kids, they might have trouble trying to climb up to the bunk beds. Also, in the double room, you might hear the sprinklers going off before dawn. If you’re a light sleeper, that could be a bit annoying. Just thought you should know.

Welcome to my review of this incredible coastal getaway!
I’ll start with discussing the accommodations. They are simple yet elegant, providing a comfortable and luxurious experience. There are four en-suite rooms and a fantastic family suite. During my stay, I was lucky to stay in the grandest room, which was absolutely fabulous. It featured a magnificent Hollywood mirror, a walk-in closet, a spa bath, and a luxurious three-head shower.
Now let’s talk about the food.
The breakfasts offered at this place are simply delightful. You can choose from a variety of options including yoghurt, fruit, muesli, and tasty egg fry-ups. You can enjoy your breakfast either in the charming dining room or on the lovely pool deck. If you’re in the mood for something different, I highly recommend visiting the nearby Surf Café. They serve mouthwatering dishes from various surf countries. Their Mexican enchilada and Indonesian mee goring are especially delicious!
Now, let me share some of the highlights of this remarkable destination.
One of the major highlights of this place is the long stretch of beach right at your doorstep. You can take leisurely walks on the sandy shores, heading towards the breathtaking Robberg Nature Reserve on one side. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can continue your walk all the way down to the Beacon Island Resort. The stunning views and serene atmosphere will surely leave you in awe.
Finally, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind before planning your visit.

In case you have the urge to catch up on your favorite shows, don’t worry! The communal lounge has a TV with DStv, so you can still enjoy your downtime.
