Welcome to Fairview: Where Wine, Cheese, and Farm-to-Fork Dining Unite with Goats!
When you first arrive at Fairview, a beautiful third-generation family farm situated in the Paarl Winelands, your eyes will be immediately drawn to the iconic goat tower. Have you ever wondered if the majestic billy goat is surveying the scene from the top? Or perhaps a playful group of kids is scampering up the spiral ramp? No matter what, there’s always something fascinating happening in this picturesque location.
What sets Fairview apart is its commitment to both cheese-making and winemaking. With a reputation for producing high-quality cheeses and award-winning wines, owner Charles Back wholeheartedly embraces the farm-to-fork philosophy. This means that everything created here, from the delicious cheese to the exceptional wine, is grounded in sustainable farming practices. It’s about more than just food and drinks; it’s a way of life.
Experience the Farm Deli
When I step into the farm deli, I’m instantly overwhelmed by the sheer variety of farm-fresh produce. Everything I see here comes straight from the farm, which makes it all the more special. The shelves are filled with bread, and what’s unique about it is that they even grow their own wheat for this purpose. How amazing is that? And as I walk further, refrigerators greet me, showcasing free-range lamb, boerewors, and Red Angus beef – all raised right here on the farm. The meat is top-notch, and you can taste the difference.
Speaking of taste, let me tell you about the charcuterie section. It’s a haven for meat lovers, featuring a selection of charcuterie made by the talented Neil Jewell. His expertise shines through in every slice. But here’s the best part – the pigs that the meat comes from are truly gourmet. They live happy lives, and that happiness translates into the flavor of the charcuterie.
Now, let’s move on to my favorite section – the cheese fridge. Brace yourself for a treat because this is where you’ll find a limited-edition assortment of pre-ripened specialty cheeses made from goat’s milk and cow’s milk. These cheeses are exclusive to this deli, so you won’t find them anywhere else. Trust me, they’re worth every penny.
Oh, but there’s more! The farm deli has recently introduced a plant-based range of cheeses and ice-creams. These dairy-free delights are a game-changer. Even if you’re not vegan, I highly recommend giving them a try. They are absolutely heavenly and cater to a wide range of tastes.
Indulge in Nature’s Sweetness
In the cozy wine-tasting room next door, Charles’s love for the Mediterranean shines through in his passion for Rhône wines. From the playful and popular Goats do Roam collection to the smooth cap classique and the experimental small-batch Bloemcool wines, winemaker Anthony de Jager has the freedom to be creative. Fairview’s regional revival range, inspired by Mediterranean classics like the Super Tuscans, is also a must-try.
Now, let’s talk about the costs. You have a few options to choose from. The Farmer’s tasting is priced at R95 and includes six wines paired with four cheeses and two cured meats. The Standard tasting, priced at R75, also offers six wines, but this time paired with six cheeses. If you’re looking to elevate your experience, the Master tasting is the way to go. For R150, you’ll enjoy eight premium wines paired with eight cheeses, along with bread and olive oil.
Here’s something good to know. If you’re visiting with little ones, there’s a children’s tasting available, featuring cheeses and EGA rooibos or lemonade. So, everyone can have a delightful experience. Don’t miss out on the chance to book your wine tasting!
