Adventure awaits: Experience Goat Tours and Mountain Walks at Fairview!
When you set foot on the stunning Paarl wine estate, your eyes are immediately drawn to Fairview’s iconic goat tower. What a sight it is! Will you spot the magnificent billy goat overseeing his domain from the top, or perhaps catch a glimpse of mischievous kids frolicking up the spiral ramp? Fairview is renowned for its trailblazing cheese-making and award-winning wines, but there’s so much more to discover about the Back family farm. Come join me on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour with Farmer Donald Mouton, where we’ll delve into the fascinating world of goats and cheesemakers.
A Day with Farmer Donald
After dedicating 22 years to Fairview, I can confidently say that I know this farm like the back of my hand. Over the years, I’ve had my hands in everything from taking care of livestock to managing vineyards. However, my love for the outdoors extends beyond the boundaries of this farm. As an avid mountain-biker, trail runner, and all-round adventurer, I find joy in exploring the wonders of nature.
Introducing: The Goat Tour
Have you ever wanted to meet our Fairview goat herd up-close? Well, now you have the perfect opportunity! Join me for an insider’s view into the daily life and workings of our goat farm. On this tour, you’ll also get a chance to see the adorable newborn kids in the springtime. It’s an experience like no other.
But let me take a step back and tell you a bit about the fascinating story behind our goat farm. Back in 1980, Fairview made history by becoming the first farm in South Africa to produce goat’s cheese. How did it all come about? Well, Cyril and Beryl Back fell head over heels for the delicious cheeses they tasted in France during their travels. Determined to recreate those flavors right here on our farm, they embarked on a challenging journey filled with plenty of ups and downs.
If you’re looking for a fun and educational experience, you’ll love the tour I offer. After the tour, we have a cheese tasting in the Fairview Tasting Room. Alternatively, you can choose to take snack packs with you.
The cost for this tour is R150 per person, which includes the cheese tasting or snack packs. The tour is available on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday at 10am and 2pm. On Wednesdays, it is available at 2pm. The duration of the tour is 2 hours with cheese tasting and 1 hour with snack packs. Please note that there is a minimum group size of 10 people.
