Exploring Wellington Unveiling the Charms of a Wanderer

For more than ten years, I’ve been following the transformations happening in Wellington, and as a journalist, it’s my job to document these changes. Recently, I had the opportunity to delve into the next chapter of Wellington’s story with Renault’s newest Duster.

Exploring Wellington Unveiling the Charms of a Wanderer

So, I’m on the hunt for the Cape sugarbird. It’s a risky business, and not for the faint of heart. But thankfully, Renault’s trusty Duster came to the rescue when a group of easily distracted birdwatchers found themselves in a sticky situation up Bainskloof Pass.

When you want to get a real feel for a small town, you won’t find it at the fancy tourist spots. It’s not at the perfectly staged museum or the late-night pub. No, if you truly want to understand the essence of a place, you have to visit the old age home and the local junk shop. These hidden gems are like treasure troves of stories waiting to be discovered.

Unearthing Stories at Ou Kaya with Steam and Sarah Moon

When I learned that I couldn’t visit the ouetehuis due to Covid, I was disappointed. However, I soon discovered that Wellington has plenty of junk shops to explore. One shop that caught my eye was Ou Kaya, located on Distillery Street, just across from the Railway Hotel.

Ou Kaya is like a hidden gem in the Swartland region, away from the usual tourist spots. While many visitors focus on popular attractions like the Bainskloof Pass or the Bosjes Chapel, Ou Kaya offers a unique and offbeat retreat. As I entered the shop, I was immediately drawn to the vibrant display of cacti in the back. These fascinating succulents, some reaching two storeys high or as tiny as my thumb, created a secret garden unlike anything I had seen before.

But Ou Kaya isn’t just about plants. It’s also a treasure trove of eclectic items. The shop’s interior is a delightful chaos of garage art that makes you wonder if it’s valuable or just quirky. As I explored further, I found shelves filled with unloved Japanese crockery, a collection of screwdrivers that belonged to a person named Oom Sarel, and even a faded photograph of Sarah Moon hidden behind a basket of old tennis racquets from the 1970s.

The shop’s menu also surprised me. I couldn’t resist trying the lamb and wildsvleis pies. The flavors were so delicious that I can only imagine how they would have brought tears of joy to the eyes of a hungry 18th-century Cornish miner.

Visiting Ou Kaya was a delightful and unexpected adventure. It reminded me that sometimes the best experiences are found off the beaten path. If you’re in Wellington and seeking a unique retreat, I highly recommend paying a visit to Ou Kaya. You never know what hidden treasures you might discover!

Exploring Wellington Unveiling the Charms of a Wanderer

Juliene Basson and Braam van Zyl have been running Ou Kaya for years. Braam is the expert when it comes to succulents, while Juliene takes care of everything else like a queen. Recently, they welcomed a new member to their team, Coenie van Heerden. He now runs his own coffee shop in rooms three and four of the old, converted onderdorp house. Coenie is very proud of his shiny new espresso machine!

While enjoying a cup of Coenie’s delicious lattes, Braam and Juliene tell me about Wellington, the town they call home. “Wellington is located between Stellenbosch and Malmesbury,” they explain. “The university students bring lots of energy to the town, and the hot summers keep the European visitors away. This means that unlike other towns in the Cape, Wellington has a larger local population than visitors from outside. It may not be as wealthy, but it’s more affordable for us to live here.”

As it turns out, growing cacti is a highly competitive industry. “We even have to lock up our special cacti in the chicken coop,” Juliene says. “Visitors come with their handbags and backpacks, trying to steal our seeds. We once had a man come back and brag about how well his stolen plants were doing!”

The tractor and the Morris shared a cozy slumber:

Toeka Stoor

Toeka Stoor is located in Wellington, towards Paardeberg, off the R44 on the Vryguns Road. It’s a perfect destination to explore Renault’s newest Duster. The stoor is part of the Domaine Brahms winery and events venue, owned by Johan and Gesie van Deventer. Johan’s passion lies in tractors, while Gesie is an avid collector. If collecting things was an Olympic sport, South Africa would win every time. Johan sits atop his exquisitely restored John Deere 730, reminiscing about his childhood like an ecstatic schoolboy. He starts the magnificent American icon, a delightful sputtering of paraffin and petrol, amazed at how it idles at such a slow pace. ‘I purchased this beauty at an auction just as Covid hit. The big boys weren’t around, and I got it at a bargain price. Now, I’m receiving all these emails from American collectors, offering me ridiculous amounts of money. And the locals? They’re furious!’

Exploring Wellington Unveiling the Charms of a Wanderer

I’ve got something really special to share with you today. It’s called the Van Deventer’s Toeka Stoor, and it’s not your ordinary store. In fact, it’s all about the art of collecting. You’ll find a wide variety of unique items here, from tractors to the tastiest chicken strips in the Winelands.

I’m filled with pure delight at my cleverness. I’m also proud because the rare John Deere is the very first exhibit in a special tractor museum. As we chat, a fleet of rumbling machines make their entrance, filling the air with their unmistakable sound. In another barn, Gesie is organizing an enormous collection of jerrycans. It’s like a hidden treasure trove in there, packed with so much to see that you hardly even notice the restaurant, with its tables scattered among vintage cars and tractors. Gesie is full of energy. “I’ve taken time off work and I’m really getting into it. We have a new museum and a new chef, everything is happening.” I ask Gesie about his other job, and he tells me proudly, “I’m the executive mayor of Stellenbosch.” Well, there you have it. Someone has to do it, so why not be a collector of obscure Africana on the outskirts of Wellington? @toekastoordomainebrahms

A gecko on a boulder:

The Bainskloof Pass

I gazed upon Bainskloof Pass and couldn’t help but notice its worn-out appearance, with gaps in the barrier resembling missing teeth. Just some flimsy tape provided by the municipality separates me from a potentially perilous plunge into the water below. Yet, despite the concerning conditions, this road boasts an awe-inspiring level of excitement that few can rival.

As I ascend the pass from Wellington in my trusty Duster, it surpasses my expectations. Just before reaching the quaint hamlet of Bain’s Kloof, I come across a rocky track leading to a picturesque picnic spot that beckons me. However, my excitement fades away as I suddenly remember that this Duster is only equipped with 4×2 drive, not the 4×4 version. It’s too late to turn back now. Can I get a running start? Not a chance. Is there an alternative route? None to be found. Filled with a mix of anxiety and hope, I offer a silent prayer to the mountain gods, and off I go.

The front wheels struggle for traction as they attempt to climb over the slippery river stones. For a moment, it feels like we’re stuck with no way forward. But just when all seems lost, the Duster finds its grip. It bites into the terrain, gaining confidence with each successful maneuver. I spot a gecko perched on a nearby boulder, a small testament to the benevolent mountain gods and the indomitable spirit of the Duster.

Exploring Wellington Unveiling the Charms of a Wanderer

I feel right at home in the Renault Duster, especially when I’m driving on dirt roads. Even if it’s a 2×4, this car can handle the rough terrain. But if you’re looking for some serious rock hopping, then you should definitely go for the 4×4 option.

As I take the Duster down towards Ceres during sunset, I can’t help but marvel at the Cambrian landscape. This place is like no other – it’s filled with typhonic shadows and dimension shifting. It’s a world that’s been around for ages, and it’s both frightening and captivating at the same time. You have to take it slow and respect the challenge that lies ahead. It’s not something you want to rush through. But once you conquer it, you’ll feel a sense of relief mixed with disappointment as you leave this magical place.

As I continue my journey, the Witte River gorge starts to flatten out and I come across the Calabash Bush Pub. It’s a sign that I’m entering civilization again. The world returns to normal, but I can’t help but appreciate the Duster for its ability to handle any challenge that comes its way. It’s a true SUV that matches the spirit of this town – no-nonsense and can-do.

So, here’s to the Renault Duster and the town it represents. They both deserve a round of applause for their resilience and the way they tackle life head-on.

I found this incredible place called Eikehof Farm. It’s located just 15 minutes away from Worcester in South Africa. To get there, you take the R43 Mitchell’s Pass road towards Ceres. It’s a hidden gem, with a history dating back to the 18th century. The owners have done a remarkable job restoring the farmstead, preserving its original character and charm. They’ve truly gone above and beyond.

What I love about Eikehof Farm is that it’s not your typical high-end luxury accommodation. Yes, it’s luxurious, but it’s also cozy and inviting. The Manor House has three bedrooms, and there are two additional cottages – De Oude School with two bedrooms and Klippenhok with one bedroom. So, if you’re traveling with a big group of friends or family, this place is perfect for you.

The farm is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. The Olifantsberg, which is right in the backyard, offers amazing opportunities for hiking, wildlife spotting, and birdwatching. The whole experience is like stepping into a tranquil paradise. And if you’re a dog or goat lover, you’ll be delighted to know that the animals here roam freely, adding to the farm’s charm.

Oh, and did I mention the gardens? They are so fragrant and lovely – a feast for the senses. Spending lazy afternoons on the various verandas and outside stoeps, while sipping sundowners, is pure bliss.

Eikehof Farm also has a converted plaasdam that now serves as a swimming pool. It’s easily accessible and is a great spot to cool off and relax during your stay.

Now, let’s talk about the rates. During the off-peak season, you can rent the entire farm (which sleeps 12) for R12 000 per night. If you visit between 1 December and 15 January, it’s R16 000 per night. To make a booking, you can contact Perfect Hideaways at 021 790 0972 or visit eikehof.co.za.

I highly recommend Eikehof Farm if you’re looking for a unique and unforgettable getaway. It’s the perfect combination of luxury, tranquility, and natural beauty. Trust me, once you experience it, you’ll fall in love with everything about this place.

Nonetheless, Ford deserves credit for offering a relatively affordable automatic option that still offers some lifestyle benefits.

When it comes to the technical details, the engine delivers 91kW of power at 6,500rpm and 150Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. The driven wheels are in the front, and the car comes with a four-year/120,000km warranty and a four-year/60,000km service plan.
