When I arrived at Inhambane Airport on a sunny winter afternoon, it felt like stepping into paradise. The short drive to the lodge was a delightful experience, with breathtaking views of estuaries, cassava fields, and perfectly manicured vegetable patches surrounding charming houses.

As I reached the lodge, a magnificent sanctuary nestled on a dune overlooking the Indian Ocean, I was warmly greeted by the attentive staff, offered a refreshing facecloth, and handed a delicious cocktail. This hidden gem, previously known as Blue Footprints, has recently undergone extensive renovations and is now known as Sava Dunes. The name Sava, derived from the Shangaan language, meaning ‘sand,’ perfectly captures the essence of this tranquil haven.

When you visit Sava, you’ll be greeted with stunning ocean views and surrounded by natural beauty. With five free-standing suites, each offering a picturesque view of the ocean, you’ll find your accommodation to be light, airy, and comfortable. The private deck attached to my suite was the perfect spot to relax in the dangerously comfortable hammock. I spent my days at Sava in complete relaxation, whether I was reading a book in one of the cozy nooks, lounging on the deck to watch whales and dolphins, or enjoying the poolside sun loungers. The beach is a great place to swim, and if you’re into surfing or bodyboarding, you’ll find a solid right-hand break. Don’t forget to take a long stroll along the beach in the afternoon. The best part? Sava feels like your own private beach, but if you feel like exploring, you can take a short walk to the lively surfer town of Tofo or the beautiful Barra beaches. It’s the perfect blend of tranquility and excitement!

When I visited the lodge in Tofo, I had the opportunity to witness the amazing process of catching seafood right in front of the lodge or purchasing it directly from the fishing boats. It was an exciting and unique experience that added an extra layer of appreciation to the delicious meals I enjoyed during my stay.

But the excitement didn’t stop there. I decided to sign up for a drift dive with Liquid Dive Adventures and it turned out to be an exhilarating adventure. As I ventured underwater, I was captivated by the graceful movements of majestic four-metre manta rays, the impressive presence of a colossal potato bass, and the rare sight of an expertly camouflaged frog fish. Each moment was filled with awe and wonder.

The following day, I went on an ocean safari and had the privilege of spotting a humpback whale and her calf. It was a breathtaking sight that reminded me of the sheer beauty and grandeur of marine life. During a snorkeling session, I was delighted to have the company of bottlenose dolphins. The experience of swimming alongside these intelligent creatures was nothing short of magical. And let’s not forget about the regular sightings of whale sharks, which are also a trademark feature of this incredible place.

Aside from the thrilling adventures, one of the standout aspects of my stay at Sava Lodge was the food. The lodge manager, Keenan Houareau, is not only a qualified chef but also an artist in the kitchen. Every day, he meticulously sources fresh ingredients from the sea, including lobster, barracuda, blue crab, and red snapper. The meals he creates are a true testament to his skill and passion, and I savored every bite.
