Did you know that Stellenbosch has more to offer than just wine? You can have a taste of uMqombothi (traditional beer) in the Kayamandi township.

Mamma Swartbooi, also known as gogo to me, shared an interesting recipe with me while we were at Hartenberg Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. She described how to make a delicious drink called gemmer (ginger beer). All you need is two litres of water, two tablespoons of Robertson’s ginger powder, two cups of sugar, one teaspoon of cream of tartar, a handful of raisins, the skin of a pineapple, and a teaspoon of yeast.

As I sipped on a glass of the estate’s Shiraz, my taste buds were transported to a heavenly place.

Have you ever heard of home-made Gemmer? It’s a popular ginger beer that I recently discovered in the Afrikaans town of Stellenbosch. It’s funny how I learned about this traditional Xhosa drink in a place like Stellenbosch, known for its delightful food and drinks. Earlier, I had a chat with William Joubert, the viticulturist at Hartenberg, while enjoying a braai. He shared with me the secret to making a perfect fire – using pine.

“Pine gives off glue, so it’s like an oil that helps ignite the fire,” he explained.

Then, we all indulged in some braaied sandwiches. Can you believe I had never heard of braaibroodjies before? They are a speciality in Afrikaans cuisine – toasted bread with cheese, tomato, onion, and butter. And let me tell you, those sandwiches were absolutely delicious – the melted cheese oozing between my fingers.

Have you ever heard of braaibroodjies and the award-winning Gravel Hill wine at Hartenberg Wine Estate? If not, you’re in for a treat!

As I drove along the highway towards Stellenbosch, I couldn’t help but notice the shacks that lined the road. It’s interesting to know that this area is listed as having one of the highest concentrations of millionaires in the country!

This was only my third visit to Stellenbosch. The first time, I was on a date and was completely captivated by my tall and good-looking companion. The second time, I was there for a family gathering during the festive season, where we had a cozy time catching up.

But, despite these visits, I still didn’t know much about Stellenbosch. I had heard stories about its conservatism, its vibrant student population, and its amazing wines that have won numerous awards. It made me wonder what else I would discover on this trip.

Have you ever been to Stellenbosch? It’s such a beautiful place! The buildings there are old but well-maintained, giving the town a charming and historic feel. As you explore the town, you’ll come across outdoor exhibitions that add to its overall appeal.

But what Stellenbosch is really famous for is its wineries. Did you know that there are around 300 wineries along the Stellenbosch Wine Route? That’s a lot of wineries to choose from! The vineyards in Stellenbosch cover an enormous 60000 hectares of land, so you can imagine how dedicated they are to producing excellent wines.

So, if you’re a wine lover, Stellenbosch is the place to be. You’ll have plenty of options when it comes to visiting wineries and trying different types of wine. And let me tell you, the wine in Stellenbosch is really good. It’s definitely worth a visit!

In the heart of the city, you’ll find sculptures and the Djomo’s Arts & Crafts Collection. It’s a treat for the eyes to see these beautiful pieces of art. And as you explore the streets, you’ll also come across intriguing street art that adds a touch of creativity to the town.

When evening came, I decided to venture out in search of a good place to have dinner. The town offered a plethora of options, making my decision a challenging one. Fortunately, I met Frank Bongoza, the friendly manager at Wijnhuis Wine Bar & Grill. He greeted me with open arms and said, ‘We’d love to offer you a welcome cocktail.’ I happily accepted his offer, and as I took the first sip, my taste buds danced in delight. The second cocktail was equally divine, leaving me in bliss.

When I visited Brampton Wine Studio the next day, I was immediately drawn in by the friendly staff and their affordable options. They invited me inside and shared, ‘Here in Stellenbosch, we bring excitement to life. We’re not secluded on farms; we’re right in the heart of the city.’ One of the things that enhances the experience of enjoying good food and wine in this town is the availability of tuk-tuks. For just R50, you can take a tour of the town, and if you’re looking to explore further, you can rent these vehicles for R200 per hour, accommodating up to six people.

A few days ago, I went to see Mamma Swartbooi in Kayamandi. Townships all kind of feel the same – there’s a sense of freedom, and everyone greets you with a smile. Mamma Swartbooi lives on Swartbooi Street, named after her father-in-law, who did a lot of good for the community during the tough times of apartheid. Since 2005, Mamma has been offering township stays through Silusapho Homestays. If you join the Bites & Sites tour of Kayamandi, led by Thembi Koli, you can even enjoy a Xhosa lunch at Mamma’s place.

In the neighborhood, I visit Mamma Swartbooi at her humble home on Swartbooi Street. As we chat, she shares some profound wisdom with me. “Child,” she says, “there’s still a lot of old-fashioned thinking in Stellenbosch. But don’t let that discourage you. Open up your home and spread love. Love is the only way to thaw the frozen hearts.”

Speaking of home, Mamma’s cooking tastes just like it. I can still vividly recall my grandmother waking up at the crack of dawn, her hands busy kneading dough to make mouthwatering amagwinya, also known as vetkoek. She would then let the dough rise while she went back to bed. Mamma serves this delicious treat with a side of chakalaka and spinach, and to quench your thirst, she offers a refreshing glass of ginger beer.

For a while, I wasn’t sure how I felt about going on township tours. But now, I realize that these tours have a way of opening up our minds, challenging our assumptions, and bridging the gap between different worlds. When I went on a tour with Thembi, I got to experience what it’s like to live in a township. We got a glimpse inside people’s homes and had the chance to chat with the locals we encountered. It was heartwarming to see the smiles and friendly greetings all around.

When I visited Kayamandi, Mamma Swartbooi graciously served me some delicious amagwinya (vetkoek) and spinach. It was a heartwarming gesture after the tour.

‘People often think of townships as crime-ridden areas, but that’s not the whole picture. Townships are actually quite appealing,’ says Pietman Retief, who works as a counselor for Cultural Affairs, Heritage, Environment, Sports, and Facilities. ‘I strongly believe that tourism can bring people together and help them understand each other.’

Stellenbosch has everything a traveler seeking unique experiences could ask for. Pietman told me about The Brandy Route and Route 62, two incredible opportunities for those who love the spirit.

There’s an exciting movement towards alternative and conscious living in this town. Lynedoch Eco Village is an incredible place with a fantastic guest house. It’s also home to the Sustainability Institute, which was established in 1999. The institute provides a space for people to explore ways of creating a fairer society that is mindful of the environment. Tanya Ward, a representative from the institute, explains, “[Our goal is] to live in a way that preserves and nurtures the ecosystem.”

Additionally, there’s Spier, a farm that not only has organic certification for its vineyards, pastures, and cellar but is also in the process of transitioning to biodynamic practices. Pay a visit to their café for a delightful meal or arrange a tour to learn more.

Wow, I was totally caught off guard by how much Stellenbosch has to offer. I always thought it was just a place for drinking wine and enjoying good food. But boy was I wrong!

Let me tell you, this town has so much character and charm. What surprised me the most was that it’s not just about the wine and fancy dining experiences. In fact, I had the chance to learn how to make two incredible recipes that come from completely different cultures. How cool is that?

Stellenbosch has this unique vibe that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s a place that has soul, that’s for sure. And the best part is, it’s so close to where I live. Only 45 minutes away, but it feels like a whole other world.
