Ed’s letter: Take me to church
Hey there!
I wanted to talk to you about something that’s been on my mind lately: the church. It’s amazing how this place can hold so much meaning for people, while also being a source of controversy. I’ve been thinking about what it means to me and how it can differ for everyone.
When I think about going to church, I think about finding a sense of peace and belonging. It’s a place where I can go to reflect, find solace, and connect with something greater than myself. I’m not sure if you feel the same way, but it’s a special place for me.
Of course, the church isn’t without its flaws. Just like any institution, it has its fair share of imperfections. Sometimes it feels like people are quick to judge, or that certain beliefs are forced upon you. It’s important to remember that these flaws don’t define the entire church community.
If you’re someone who hasn’t found a connection with the church, I want you to know that it’s okay. Finding a spiritual home is a personal journey, and it’s not the right fit for everyone. It’s about exploring different paths and finding what resonates with you.
However, I also want to remind you to keep an open mind. Even if you don’t resonate with the traditional idea of “church,” there are other ways to find a sense of spirituality and community. It could be through nature, art, or even personal relationships. The important thing is to find something that brings you joy and a sense of purpose.
In the end, the meaning of “church” can vary greatly from person to person. It’s a place that can evoke different emotions and experiences. Whether you find solace in a traditional church or in other aspects of your life, what matters most is that you find what speaks to your soul.
So, my friend, keep exploring, keep questioning, and don’t be afraid to find your own path.
Wishing you peace and happiness,
Ed

I was standing at the entrance of a cave, with dark storm clouds rolling towards me. The sky turned a strange shade of purple, and the sun vanished from sight. The tall, dark pillars of rock surrounding me became hidden in a blanket of hazy gray. The storm was quickly approaching, and the lightning cracked through the air. The thunder boomed, shaking the sandstone walls, and creating a deafening noise that only grew louder. Finally, the rain began to fall, pouring down in heavy, unrelenting sheets.
A Spiritual Journey in the Mighty Drakensberg Mountains
The power of nature is awe-inspiring. It feels almost sacred, as if the gods themselves are testing our faith. This feeling is especially true in the majestic Drakensberg Mountains. Throughout history, these mountains have been considered a holy place by various cultures.
The ancient San people, known as shamans, painted vivid depictions of the spirit world inside the caves of the Drakensberg. Their artwork served as a connection between the physical and the spiritual realms. They sought wisdom and guidance in the heights of these mountains, finding spiritual nourishment in their grandeur.
Centuries later, Voortrekker preachers gazed upon these mountains, finding inspiration in the marvels of God’s creation. They saw the Drakensberg as a testament to the divine and a reminder of their faith. For British settlers, these towering crags also held religious significance. When they named the different peaks – Cathedral Peak, the Bell, Organ Pipes, Twelve Apostles, Mitre, and Monks Cowl – they were undoubtedly thinking in religious terms. The names themselves reflect the religious iconography of Christianity.
A Spiritual Connection in Nature
There is a profound connection between spirituality and nature. It is in the presence of nature’s grandeur that we often find solace, inspiration, and a sense of something greater than ourselves. The Drakensberg Mountains exemplify this spiritual bond.
When you stand at the foot of these colossal peaks, you are reminded of the vastness of the world and your place within it. The sheer magnitude of the mountains evokes a sense of awe, filling your heart and mind with wonder. It is as if the mountains themselves are speaking to your soul, inviting you to contemplate deeper truths and meaning.
As you hike through the rugged trails, the sound of rushing waterfalls and chirping birds accompanies you. The crisp, cool air fills your lungs, rejuvenating your spirit. You cannot help but feel connected to something greater – to the very essence of life itself. In these moments, the boundaries between the physical and the spiritual blur, and you become part of something sublime.
A Personal Pilgrimage
Embarking on a journey through the Drakensberg Mountains is not just a physical experience; it is a spiritual pilgrimage. It is a chance to explore the depths of your own soul and discover profound insights.
As you navigate the winding paths and steep ascents, you are pushed beyond your limits – physically, mentally, and emotionally. In these trying moments, you learn to trust yourself and push through the challenges. Each step forward becomes a testament to your resilience and determination.
The serenity of the mountains provides the perfect environment for self-reflection and introspection. The solitude allows you to quiet your mind and listen to your inner thoughts and desires. It is a rare opportunity to disconnect from the noise and chaos of everyday life and reconnect with your true self.
By the time you descend from the epic peaks, you are forever changed. The Drakensberg Mountains leave an indelible mark on your soul, reminding you of the profound beauty and spirituality that exists in the world. You return home not only with memories but also with a newfound appreciation for the wonders that surround you.
As soon as the storm began, it quickly passed, leaving the valley bathed in bright sunlight. The slopes echoed with the sound of flowing water, and the scent of wet heather filled the air. Mesmerized by the breathtaking view, I couldn’t help but think about how modern climbers and campers come to the Berg as a form of pilgrimage. Dressed humbly in T-shirts, shorts, and hiking boots, they seek to connect with nature at its most extraordinary.
The storm signaled the start of a week-long journey along the eastern side of the Drakensberg. The following morning, at Thendele Camp – widely considered to be one of the most beautiful park accommodations in the country – we woke up with the sunrise. As we hiked up Tugela Gorge, the air was refreshingly crisp, and the sounds of sunbirds filled the air. Our path took us through grassy meadows adorned with protea flowers, and descended into valleys dotted with Afromontane forests, where ancient yellowwood and ironwood trees thrived.
Once upon a time, I found myself in a magnificent place. I ventured into a narrow gorge, where the walls were made of sandstone, reaching up to touch the sky. As I walked through, I encountered a small stream, and I decided to wade along its path. Eventually, I emerged into an open space enclosed by towering rocks. And there, right in front of me, was an incredible sight.
Imagine, if you will, a gigantic altar. That’s the best way I can describe it. It was called the Amphitheatre, and it was truly awe-inspiring. The Amphitheatre stretched out for five kilometers and stood a kilometer tall, making it one of the most breathtaking views in the entire Drakensberg region.
I spent the next few days exploring the breathtaking Mlambonja (Cathedral Peak) and Champagne valleys. To my surprise, I stumbled upon Giant’s Castle Camp, a true rival to Thendele, nestled above the Bushman’s River. The best time to witness the magic of this valley is at the crack of dawn, when the sun paints the sky and the world awakens. As the first rays of light break through the darkness, you can see the shadows retreat and the kloofs come alive with vibrant colors. And above it all, towering in its majestic glory, is the Castle, basking in the warm golden glow. It’s a sight that fills me with a sense of wonder and awe, almost like a religious experience.
When the San people inhabited this valley, it was their last sanctuary before they were forced out by white settlers. Just a short distance from Giant’s Castle Camp lies Main Caves, which holds a prized artistic gem of the Drakensberg Mountains. The cave walls are adorned with ancient San rock art, depicting scenes of hunters pursuing eland and grey rhebok. The centerpiece of these illustrations is a procession of elongated therianthropes – mythical figures that combine the characteristics of man and animal – symbolizing a bridge between the earthly realm and the world of spirits.
Gazing at these ethereal drawings, you can sense the immense energy emanating from the site. It’s not difficult to comprehend why these mountains have wielded such a powerful spiritual influence over countless generations of people. The San’s religious world seems strangely tangible here, defying the constraints of time and history.
As I stood at the entrance of the cave, I couldn’t help but contemplate the human desire for a spiritual aspect in our lives. There’s something about nature that allows us to connect with something greater than ourselves. And the view from Main Caves on a beautiful summer morning is nothing short of divine.
In this article, I’m going to take you on a journey through the valleys and foothills of the Drakensberg. We’ll explore the best campsites in the area (page 72) and discover the plethora of activities available in each region.
This month, we bid farewell to our Associate Editor Caroline Webb, who is embarking on a trip to Eswatini. Although it was initially planned as a short visit, it may turn into a more extended stay.
