It was a late Saturday night when it hit me – we’re already halfway through the year and my parents were right, time really does fly. Already down with a terrible case of wanderlust and enough annual leave days racked up, I knew what I had to do. I closed my eyes and threw a dart at my tattered map from PNA.

And just like that, I made up my mind. On June 9th at 4pm, we hit the road with the GPS all set.

Fun things to do

Ou Tronk museum

Let’s start with a visit to the Ou Tronk museum. That’s where I first met Herschel, who’s a bit of a celebrity around here. He’s known for his amazing storytelling skills, and honestly, a trip to this museum wouldn’t be complete without him.

Herschel took us on a journey through the history of Clanwilliam. He shared why this place is called the ‘Rooibos Capital of South Africa’ and told us all about the critically endangered cedar tree that only grows in the Cederberg area. It’s pretty incredible.

But there’s more! We also learned about some famous folks from Clanwilliam. Tolla van der Merwe, a beloved comedian, and C Louis Leipoldt, a talented poet, both grew up here. Plus, Herschel gave us some insight into the fascinating history of the veldskoen.

Ready for an adventure? Explore the Sevilla rock art trail.

Hey there! I want to tell you about the Sevilla rock art trail. It’s this awesome five-kilometer path that shows you nine different rock art sites. And get this, these drawings were made by the San people a long, long time ago! They used to live right here in this area!

The first part of the trail is the longest. But don’t worry, it’s totally worth it! You’ll see some incredible rock art along the way. The other sites are closer together, but they can be a bit tricky to find. You might have to climb up or squeeze through some tight spots. It’s like a puzzle adventure!

But let me tell you, that trail we embarked on was no joke. It stretched before us, basking in the relentless African sun, daring us to conquer it. I won’t lie, it wasn’t a walk in the park. It took us a good three hours to navigate that rugged terrain. But let me tell you, it was worth every step.

Despite the harsh circumstances, we found solace in the sheltering embrace of the rocks. The shade provided much-needed respite from the sweltering heat. It was a brief moment of relief amidst the untamed wilderness.

And with that, our first day in Clanwilliam drew to a close. That day opened my eyes to the hidden wonders of this charming town. There’s more to Clanwilliam than just rooibos tea. It has a spirit, an energy that captivates the hearts of those who visit.

Soldaatkop

The next day, I had an exciting trip planned to the Biedouw Valley. This place is absolutely breathtaking in the spring when the hills become a canvas of pink and blue flowers. It’s definitely one of Clanwilliam’s top attractions, and they even have a special flower show every year just for these wildflowers.

As we made our way to the valley, we came across Soldaatkop, a unique rock formation. If you look at it from the right angle, it actually resembles a soldier wearing a hat. It’s not a well-known spot, though, because it’s quite hidden from the side of the road. But if you pay close attention, you’ll be able to spot it.

To find the Biedouw Valley, just enter the code CWRP+C6 Citrusdal on Google maps. This will lead you straight there.

And don’t forget to visit The Hen House while you’re in the area. It’s a must-see spot that you won’t want to miss.

I had the chance to visit The Hen House recently, a unique farm stall and restaurant located on the beautiful Alpha Excelsior Guest Farm. I was immediately captivated by the stunning surroundings, which featured neatly arranged olive trees and vineyards stretching out as far as the eye could see. Even though the weather was unusually warm for June, a refreshing breeze provided a welcome relief.

While savoring a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee, you and I sat in complete silence, completely captivated by the breathtaking scenery of the Cederberg wilderness.

Discover the Serenity of Biedouw Valley

Finally, we reached the Biedouw Valley and made our first stop at the local youth camp. Don’t let the name fool you – it’s not just for young people. This camp offers self-catering accommodations and a peaceful, tranquil atmosphere that’s perfect for anyone looking to escape the fast-paced city life.

There are countless opportunities for exploration, but due to our limited time, we decided to go on two hikes.

There were two paths that I discovered on my adventure. The first one was a quick and steep climb that took me to a special place called the ‘amphitheatre’. It was like a natural arena where everyone at the camp would gather in the evening to have a great time.

The second path led me to a beautiful waterfall nestled between these fascinating rock formations that resembled potholes.

It was pretty awesome to see the water levels low, even though it wasn’t rainy season.

I felt a rush of excitement when I witnessed it.

Let’s Meet the Biedouw Boerbokstoet

During our time in the Biedouw Valley, we had the pleasure of visiting a charming farm that not many people know about. The farm is tucked away from the usual tourist spots, and it provided us with an unforgettable tour, thanks to Joubert, the farmer, and his wife.

So, I’m going to tell you about something really interesting that happened to me. I was learning all about boerbok meat and how Anatolian shepherd dogs are a big part of the farm. But, the coolest part was that I got to see a lamb being born and taking its first steps!

At the end of a delightful day, Joubert treated us to a barbecue and regaled us with an extraordinary tale about one of his dogs that fancies itself a goat.

I wish I could share the story with you right now, but it’s something you’ll simply have to experience for yourself.

Our final destination wasn’t exactly in Clanwilliam. It was actually quite far from there. But since we were already on our way back home, we decided to make this our last stop. When we arrived, the owner Steve greeted us warmly and gave us a tour of the organic farm stall and farm-to-table restaurant.
