On the agenda
1. Turtle tours
Hey there! Did you know that iSimangaliso Wetland Park is an amazing place located in KZN? It’s part of a 200km coastline, and what makes it special is that it’s the only major nesting area for both loggerhead and leatherback turtles in the whole of Africa! That’s pretty cool, right?
Now, these loggerhead turtles are considered “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the leatherback turtles are “vulnerable”. So, it’s crucial to protect their nesting grounds. Luckily, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has been taking care of these precious nests for over 50 years. They’re doing an incredible job!
Here’s something fascinating: these turtles don’t just come to the shore to nest randomly. Recent research suggests that female turtles actually return to the very same beach they were born on. It’s like a family tradition! How adorable is that?
If you’re planning to visit, keep in mind that guided tours are available from November until February, which is when the turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. If you’re lucky, you might even witness the hatching of the little ones. So exciting!
Oh, and I should mention that turtle sightings are not guaranteed. Nature can be unpredictable, but that’s part of its beauty!
Now, let’s talk logistics: the cost of the tour is R1350 per person, and you can find the meeting point at 57 Mckenzie St in St Lucia. Make sure to mark it on your map!
So, what are you waiting for? iSimangaliso Wetland Park is waiting for you with its enchanting turtles and breathtaking beauty. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Come and explore this amazing place!

Now, let’s talk about game drives. I absolutely love going on these adventures, and I think you will too.
Game drives are a wonderful way to explore the great outdoors and get up close and personal with nature. You’ll be amazed at the incredible wildlife you’ll encounter along the way. From majestic elephants to graceful lions, the animal kingdom is right at your fingertips.
When you embark on a game drive, you’ll be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide who will share fascinating facts and stories about the wildlife you encounter. You’ll learn so much and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world.
One of the things I find most thrilling about game drives is the element of surprise. You never know what you’ll come across during your journey. It could be a rare bird perched on a branch or a herd of zebras grazing peacefully. Every moment is an opportunity for discovery and a chance to witness something truly extraordinary.
The beauty of game drives is that they offer a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. You’ll feel a sense of tranquility as you journey through the wilderness, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.
If you’re worried about safety, rest assured that game drives are conducted by experienced professionals who prioritize your well-being. They have a deep respect for the wildlife and take every precaution to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.
So, if you’re ready for an adventure of a lifetime, I highly recommend going on a game drive. It’s an unforgettable experience that will leave you with memories to treasure for years to come.

When I think about the incredible diversity of African wildlife, one place that comes to mind is the park. It’s known as one of the most important areas in South Africa for the conservation of mammals.
The park is home to a wide range of animals, including hyenas, painted dogs, leopards, hippos, and bush babies, to name just a few. Exploring the park is like stepping into a whole different world.
If you want the best chance of seeing the park’s nocturnal animals, I’d recommend arranging a night game drive. It’s during these nighttime excursions that you have the opportunity to spot some of the park’s most elusive creatures.
When it comes to cost, you can expect to pay R395 per person for a game drive.
If you’re interested in experiencing this adventure, you can find it at Heritage Tours & Safaris on Mckenzie street. They can be reached at 083 457 2147.
3. Scuba diving
iSimangaliso has some amazing underwater ecosystems. The warm waters here are teeming with a wide range of marine life, including over 1200 species of fish and 95 types of coral. One of the best places for scuba diving is Sodwana Bay, which has exquisite reef systems that divers love to explore.
If you’re interested in diving, you can expect to pay at least R475 for a single dive if you bring your own gear. Keep in mind that air fills will cost an additional R65. The Triton Dive Lodge, located in the Olakeni Reserve in Mbazwana, Sodwana Bay, is a good starting point for diving adventures. You can reach them at 082 494 8761.
Aside from exploring the underwater world, there are also some great walking trails in St Lucia that you can enjoy. Unfortunately, I don’t have any specific information about them at the moment.
Do you love observing wildlife in its natural habitat? In St Lucia, you’re in luck! There are numerous walking trails, both self-guided and guided, where you can get up close and personal with the animals.
On these trails, you’ll have the chance to see a variety of animals, including zebra, wildebeest, impala, vervet monkeys, and duikers. And if you’re a bird lover, you’re in for a treat! The park is home to a staggering 500 bird species, including the majestic martial eagle, which unfortunately is endangered.
If you’re wondering about the specifics of these trails, you can find a comprehensive list here. And the best part? The self-guided walking trails are completely free! However, there is a park entry fee of R28 for adults and R16 for children. Additionally, there’s a vehicle entry fee of R29, as well as a community levy of R5 per person.
5. Boat cruises
Hey there! Let me tell you about the incredible hippos and crocodiles at Lake St Lucia in iSimangaliso. It’s like their own little paradise! There are so many of them, over 1000, actually. Most of these amazing creatures live in the estuary of Lake St Lucia. It’s like a super popular spot for hippos and crocs in the whole country!
Now, if you’re thinking about getting up close and personal with these big guys, I gotta give you a heads up. It’s not the best idea to dip your toes in the water. They like to hang out there, and trust me, you don’t want to disturb them!
But don’t worry, you can still see these majestic creatures from the safety of a boat. How awesome is that? You’ll get a front-row seat to one of nature’s most spectacular shows!
Oh, and before I forget, let me give you some details. It costs R600 for two people to go on this boat adventure. Sounds like a fair deal for an experience of a lifetime, right? Just head over to 166 Mckenzie St in Central, St Lucia to start your wild journey. If you need to get in touch, you can reach them at 83 487 27602.
