So, my family and I decided to take a break from the crowded beaches near Cape Town for our school holiday, and we opted to go a bit further up the Cape’s West Coast to enjoy a few relaxing days in Dwarskersbos.
The moment I set foot in the beautiful beach apartment at Dwarskersbos, something caught my attention. It was those small things that set it apart from other beach cottages I’ve experienced before. You see, dk villas Dwarskersbos has a way of being understated, just as a beach house should be, but it also adds luxurious touches that elevate your stay.

Let’s talk about the Bâtons à parfum vanilla fragrance diffusers. They are these fancy little things that make your room smell really nice. I liked them so much that I looked them up online to see if I could buy them in Cape Town. But then I saw that they cost about R600 each, so I decided they were more of a luxury than a necessity.
I have to say, though, the Hotel Collection bathrobes in the rooms were a nice touch. And they had these small but thoughtful details, like a hand towel in charcoal color with ‘make-up remover’ written on it. It’s the perfect towel to use when you need to take off your makeup at the end of the day. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used a fluffy white hotel towel to dry my face, only to find out later that my mascara or foundation was still there.
When I arrived at dkVillas The Boardwalk in Hout Bay, I was greeted with a delightful surprise – champagne and chocolates. It instantly reminded me of my previous visit, where I was also treated to these indulgences. After settling in, I decided to take a leisurely walk to the beach, which was conveniently close by.
The bay in Hout Bay is quite expansive, stretching from St Helena Bay all the way up north to the Rocher Pan Nature Reserve, with Eland’s Bay just before it. Eland’s Bay is known for its fantastic surf, but the waves here in Hout Bay were more gentle and perfect for a bit of body boarding.
As the evening arrived, we decided to have a braai and enjoy our meal outside on the enclosed stoep. The warm summer evening provided the perfect backdrop, as the sun’s last rays painted the sky with a breathtaking symphony of colors.
When I woke up the next morning, everything was covered in mist. I grabbed a cup of coffee from the machine and settled in to watch cricket on TV while my teenagers hopped on the WiFi to stay entertained. Once the mist cleared around noon, we made our way to the beach. The ocean was cool and refreshing, not as cold as the waters in Clifton or Blouberg to the south.
We were so happy just hanging out on the patio and grilling in the summer heat that we didn’t feel like going out to eat at any of the local restaurants. Although, we heard that Charlie’s Brewhouse and Russells on the Port are great options. They’re located on the nearby Port Own marina, which feels like a little European port with all the yachts floating around.
One morning, I cooked some eggs for breakfast. But if you’re feeling more adventurous in the kitchen, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s equipped with top-notch appliances and kitchenware.
I can’t help but smile as I recall my exhilarating experience boogie boarding in the shallows. The refreshing touch of the ocean on my skin was pure bliss. The pristine beach at Dwarskersbos stretched out before me, adorned with seashells waiting to be discovered. On our final day, my daughter and I delighted in taking a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, collecting shells as we went.
As we walked, our eyes were treated to the mesmerizing sight of sandwich terns diving into the ocean, swiftly grabbing their fishy breakfasts. Majestic seagulls gracefully wandered and soared above the beach, effortlessly claiming the sky as their own. We were always greeted with warmth by the couples hand in hand, the content dog walkers, and the fathers and sons engrossed in their cricket games on the sandy terrain.
It felt bittersweet to bid farewell to this enchanting place. We could have easily spent an entire week here, lost in the timeless blend of relaxation and joyful moments. I can’t help but yearn for more lazy days that seamlessly merge into one another, creating a medley of laughter and tranquility. This brief encounter with nature’s beauty has left an indelible mark on my heart.
