During our journey through Malawi, we visited many popular destinations that had been highly recommended by others. However, there was one place that had eluded us, a place shrouded in mystery. We decided to venture off the beaten path and explore Makuzi Beach Lodge on Lake Malawi.

As we arrived, we were immediately captivated by the beauty that surrounded us. The crystal clear waters of Lake Malawi stretched out before us, inviting us to dip our toes in and experience its magic.

The Makuzi Beach Lodge Experience

We didn’t know what to expect. What we had read seemed promising, but we had learned during our six-week journey through Africa that other people’s opinions and experiences can be very different from our own. Yet, when we arrived, my husband declared that this might be the best place we had been to so far. I couldn’t disagree (not that I wanted to), because we found ourselves at a beautiful, deserted campsite, overlooking an impressive beach, in a peaceful and well-designed lodge (with a bar) on Lake Malawi (without the risk of bilharzia!).

We had visited many campsites on our trip, and this one could be one of the best. Not because of its structure or infrastructure, and being able to effortlessly accommodate overlanders. On the contrary, it was small, basic, and unpretentious. Relaxed and intimate in a truly satisfying setting. All the important details were taken into account without compromising the lodge’s atmosphere or what makes a great campsite. I appreciated that paying guests wouldn’t be bothered by campers, and campers could enjoy a slice of paradise with a view, instead of being pushed to the outskirts of the lodge like in many other places we had stayed at. Makuzi Beach Lodge is located right along a private beach. It consists of a central bar and restaurant, and besides the campsite, which is at the far end of the property, the lodge also offers several standard and superior beachfront chalets. Each chalet is essentially a small round hut nestled in the lush lodge gardens. Whether you’re on a tight budget or have some extra cash to spare, Makuzi Beach Lodge is definitely worth a visit for some rest and relaxation. It’s also a great place for families to enjoy.
