As soon as I arrived, I was struck by the breathtaking views that surrounded me. The winery is perched high on a hill, offering panoramic vistas of lush vineyards and majestic mountains. It was like stepping into a postcard.
But the beauty of Constantia Glen doesn’t end with the view. The winery is known for its exceptional wines and delicious food. When you visit this extraordinary place in Constantia, whether you’re going for a wine-tasting experience or enjoying a relaxed meal, you can expect to see some of the most incredible views in Cape Town.
As soon as you start your journey up the driveway, surrounded by beautiful fynbos on either side, you’ll be amazed by the stunning scenery of Constantia Glen. You’ll pass by fields and vast lawns with trees until you finally reach the busy parking area of this historic estate in the Constantia Valley.
Don’t let the bustling carpark mislead you, though. Once you step inside, you’ll find a peaceful and intimate atmosphere, far removed from the hectic pace outside.
When I stepped into the venue, I was immediately captivated by the breathtaking scenery that enveloped me. Towering mountains and rolling vineyards stretched out before my eyes, creating a 360-degree panorama that left me in awe. The venue itself was designed thoughtfully, with intimate spaces strategically placed along the perimeter of the building. This clever layout allowed us to enjoy the best views that Cape Town has to offer, making our visit truly unforgettable.
I couldn’t help but chuckle as my partner, equally amazed by the beauty surrounding us, jokingly asked why we bother traveling all the way to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek when we have everything we need right here in our backyard. It was a lighthearted moment, but it carried some truth. Constantia Glen, nestled in the valley on the northeastern slopes of Table Mountain, offers not only stunning vistas but also exceptional wines.
When it comes to health and safety, Constantia Glen takes Covid precautions seriously. They have implemented regulations such as wearing masks, using hand sanitizers, and practicing social distancing. Reservations are also encouraged to ensure that the number of visitors can be managed effectively.
A full-circle experience
Let me take you back in time to 1685 when Simon van der Stel set foot on the Cape and discovered this magnificent 60-hectare estate. It has a rich history, being one of the oldest wine-producing farms in Africa, although it wasn’t officially recognized as a property until 1813. Fast forward to 1960, when the Austrian Waibel family purchased the land. For years, they dedicated themselves to raising Angus cattle. However, in 2000, they decided to embrace the estate’s grape-growing legacy and restore it to its former glory.
Here’s where it gets interesting. In 2007, they breathed new life into the vineyard, producing their very first wine. Since then, they’ve been on a roll, churning out an impressive 110,000 bottles per year. Their focus? Crafting elegant, cool-climate sauvignon blancs and Bordeaux-style reds that are truly a sight to behold.
Indulge in exquisite flavors
When you visit this place, you have the luxury of choosing any seat. There isn’t a single seat that is less desirable. My arrival was perfectly timed to catch the stunning sunset and make the most of the extended operating hours of the restaurant and tasting room. As we surveyed our options, the verandah beckoned with its charming wicker chairs and tables, offering a delightful spot to bask in the warm rays of sunlight. However, we decided to settle into a booth inside, which was just as chic and stylish. This choice allowed our exhausted four-year-old to take a peaceful nap while we indulged ourselves in the exquisite flavors and sipped on fine beverages to our heart’s content.
