On April 30th, we celebrated World Land Rover Day. It was a special occasion because it marked 70 years since the original Land Rover was first showcased to the world back in 1948 at the Amsterdam Motor Show.

Here at Getaway magazine, we have a passion for exploring tough terrains and uncovering new places. So when some of my colleagues and I got the chance to visit Damarakloof Farm in Stellenbosch and experience the Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover Sport, we were thrilled. We spent half a day learning about off-road 4×4 skills and discovering the capabilities of Land Rover vehicles.

As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by Pierre and Estelle Versfeld, the amazing owners and operators of the Land Rover Experience in the Western Cape. They’ve built a fantastic branch right here in the Western Cape, offering an incredible opportunity for anyone who wants to enhance their driving skills, have an epic team building experience, or simply brush up on their 4×4 abilities.

The Land Rover Experience is an exciting adventure that you can enjoy in the Western Cape and Gauteng province. You’ll have a blast tackling different off-road terrains and learning valuable skills from the experts who will be right there with you. Your journey begins with snacks and drinks, setting the stage for an exhilarating experience. But before we hit the trails, our knowledgeable guide JP Versfeld walks us through the basics in a PowerPoint presentation. He explains things like locking differentials and traction control in a way that’s easy to understand.

Once we have a good grasp of the theory, it’s time to put our newfound knowledge to the test. The Land Rover Experience gives us the opportunity to truly challenge ourselves and push the limits of what we thought we were capable of. But don’t worry, even if you’re a nervous off-road driver like me, the Land Rover instructor, Wynand Bohnen, will be there every step of the way. He’s patient, helpful, and makes you feel comfortable in the driver’s seat.

First, let me tell you about the amazing adventure I had recently! We were at this training facility, and guess what? They had this really cool obstacle course that was specially made. It was like a mini version of what the pros use! After tackling that challenge, we decided to take on the Welgelegen 4×4 trail in the Bottelary Hills area, which is located between Stellenbosch and Brackenfell.

When it comes to putting my skills to the test, the fun part begins. I had the chance to take part in five different obstacles. The first obstacle tested my abilities to climb and descend hills. But here’s the thing, all I really had to do was steer the vehicle along the right path. The Land Rover’s hill descent control did all the hard work for me.

Next up was the second obstacle, which involved navigating through a water crossing. And let me tell you, it was no walk in the park. Trying to steer through that water was quite the challenge.

Then came the third obstacle, and it was a real doozy. I had to maneuver the vehicle along a steep embankment at a 27-degree angle. Now, that might not sound like much when you just read about it, but let me assure you, it’s no easy task. Sitting up so high above the passenger seat felt completely unnatural.

Right before we set off on the Welgelegen 4×4 trail, there was one last challenge to overcome. We had to navigate through deep ditches that looked like giant potholes. When we drove over them, one of the wheels would lift up into the air, leaving the car hanging above the hole. Luckily, the Land Rovers had a special feature that distributed the power to the wheels that were still on solid ground. This helped us maintain traction and cross the obstacles without any trouble or effort at all.
