As you wander through the enchanting landscapes of Hogsback, you can’t help but feel a sense of wonder and awe. The towering trees stretch towards the sky, creating a canopy of green that provides shade and shelter. The sound of birds chirping and water trickling creates a soothing symphony that envelops you, easing your troubles and calming your mind.

One of the most popular attractions in Hogsback is the Big Tree – a massive yellowwood tree that stands tall and proud. As I stood in its presence, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of connection to the natural world. It’s moments like these that remind you of the beauty and power of nature, and how small we are in comparison.

But it’s not just the physical beauty of Hogsback that makes it so special – it’s the sense of peace and tranquility that permeates the air. There’s something about this place that makes you want to slow down, take a deep breath, and just be in the moment. It’s a reminder that life doesn’t always have to be fast-paced and chaotic – sometimes, all you need is a quiet corner of the world to find solace and rejuvenate your spirit.

And as you do, you’ll feel your worries melt away, replaced by a sense of peace and tranquility. Nature has a way of doing that – of reminding us of the simple joys and wonders that surround us, if only we take the time to notice.

So pack your bags, hit the road, and let Hogsback work its magic on you. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

‘You seem much more relaxed this afternoon compared to yesterday,’ Ticia remarked.

I wasn’t surprised by Ticia’s observation. Having arrived just the previous day from scorching hot Johannesburg with temperatures reaching 30 degrees, I found myself in Hogsback amid a mid-monsoon storm. Poorly equipped for the cold weather, I shivered in my thin jacket as whispers of snow filtered through the air and settled at my table in the cozy Happy Hogs Restaurant, where I sought refuge and warmth by the fireplace, sipping on a steaming cup of delicious coffee.

When I arrived in Hogsback, the locals wasted no time in sharing their weather tales. They informed me that it snowed every month of the previous year, except for February. They also mentioned that summer weather in Hogsback can be quite unpredictable. My own experience over the next four days confirmed their words.

The mist would roll in, covering the entire valley in a hazy white blanket. It felt as though the air itself had turned to water, making everything damp and cold. Then, just as suddenly, the mist would dissipate, leaving behind a clear blue sky.

But the weather had more surprises in store. One moment, the sun would be shining brightly, its rays beating down on the village and causing me to break into a sweat. The next moment, ice pellets would come hurtling down, covering the windscreen of my car. It was as if the seasons couldn’t make up their mind.

As night fell, a chill settled in the air, reminding me that winter was still lingering. And sure enough, I woke up to find a light dusting of snow on the ground. It hadn’t snowed heavily, but up in the mountains near the hogs, there was enough snow to create a picturesque view.

Hogsback truly lives up to its name, with its three distinct geological ridges resembling the spines of hogs. But it’s not just the mountains that make this place special; it’s the ever-changing weather that keeps things interesting. In just a few days, I experienced the full spectrum of weather conditions, from misty and chilly to sunny and sweltering, with a touch of snow thrown in for good measure.

On that rainy first day, I jumped from fireplace to fireplace in my silly slip-ons. Luckily, the village was much better prepared for the cold than I was. I warmed myself up with a hearty bowl of chorizo and bean soup at the Happy Hogs Restaurant. Even with the rain still pouring down, I headed to the Hogsback Inn later that evening for some tasty chicken curry. The bar was filled with locals telling tales about the old hotel, which was established in the 1880s and even had the first swimming pool in Hogsback. Brrrrr.

The bad weather might explain all the potholes in town, but it doesn’t explain the people. I couldn’t help but wonder why this town, with only one road, one grocery store, and one petrol pump, attracted such a diverse community. There were hippies, retirees running guest houses, and recently, even younger families. It was all quite intriguing, as the locals would say.

Raindrops fall from the vibrant red maple leaves that line the paths of the Arboretum.

When I opened my eyes on the second morning, Hogsback had transformed into a whole new town. The sun sparkled on the raindrops streaming from the leaves outside my warm and cozy cottage in Maple Grove. As the day went on, the clouds lifted higher and higher, revealing the majestic Amathole Mountains. And then, like a beautiful surprise, the lush Afro-montane forests emerged, with waterfalls flowing down the slopes after the rainfall. It was a breathtaking glimpse of nature’s wonders, and our guide, Neels du Toit, took us on an exhilarating cycle tour and hike to explore it all.

Neels, a true adventurer, came to Hogsback for a five-day vacation and ended up staying for five years. He knows every hidden corner of this paradise and shared his knowledge with us as we ventured into the unknown. Our first destination was the enchanting Arboretum, a place where nature’s beauty thrives. It was here that Mr. Summerton, a local resident, planted the seeds of the future over 100 years ago. Thanks to his dedication, Hogsback is now home to towering Californian redwoods, along with various other magnificent trees and fruit orchards.

Long before the dry pine plantations took over, these forests were the domain of the mighty Eastern Cape lion. They were their strongholds, their kingdoms. But sadly, the last lion was hunted down just fifty years ago, not far from where we stood in awe of the Arboretum’s splendor.

When I joined Neels du Toit on a mid-morning cycle tour, I couldn’t have expected the incredible beauty that awaited us. Hogsback’s indigenous forests are a sight to behold, with lush foliage covering every inch of the landscape. It’s a place where nature thrives, and it’s truly remarkable.

As I explored the forested slopes, I learned just how important this area is for wildlife. It’s home to some incredible creatures, like the blue duiker, the smallest antelope in existence. I was amazed to discover that the critically endangered Amatola toad, the tiniest toad in the world, also calls this place home. They rely on the unique climatic conditions here, hibernating underground until the first rains arrive. Once the rains come, they emerge to mate and spawn before returning to the depths once again.

Neels enlightened me on the natural systems that exist beneath the tall trees, ferns, and moss clumps. It’s a mushy and slippery world down there, but it plays a vital role in supporting the diverse life above. The Cape parrots, which are unique to South Africa, rely on the majestic yellowwood tree for their survival. Their unmistakable squawks fill the forests, a reminder of the importance of preserving this habitat. Sometimes, these parrots even venture into town, soaring above the shops and restaurants.

As we continued our journey, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe as Samango monkeys gazed at us from the treetops. These endangered primates also call Hogsback home and serve as a reminder of the diverse and fragile ecosystems that exist in this beautiful place.

As I pedaled through the forest, mud splattered my legs and my shoes sank into the dirt road. I tried my best to stay balanced, but poor Neels wasn’t as fortunate. He hit a slippery spot, skidded, and ended up taking a dive right into the thick, muddy mess. Thankfully, we had a chance to clean up in the rushing streams nearby.

At the bottom of the Madonna and Child waterfall, water sprayed against my face. It was like a refreshing burst of nature in this enchanting wooded wonderland. As I stood there, a group of young people caught my attention. They were lounging on some rocks, enjoying a moment of rest. They kindly offered us some coffee that they had brewed on a small camping stove. They handed me a tiny steel espresso tumbler filled with their special brew. They warned me that it was different, with a spicy kick.

I took a sip and was pleasantly surprised. The warm flavors of cardamom danced on my taste buds, transforming my perspective on this traditionally bitter drink. It was a unique twist that I hadn’t experienced before, and it opened my eyes to new possibilities.

As I made my way back to the cottage, I encountered a roadblock of cattle. Surprisingly, it didn’t bother me at all. I decided to pass the time by exploring a beautiful garden nearby, where I stumbled upon enchanting fairies. Delicate sculptures were carefully placed amidst the meandering walkways, which were adorned with vibrant foxgloves and fuchsias.

On the other side of the road, I stumbled upon a delightful lunch spot. I indulged in a meal of fresh sprouts, crunchy and colorful roots, and seed-covered falafel. I savored the dishes under the crisp sunshine, enjoying the refreshing taste of a cold coffee shake.

In that moment, the true allure of this village became clear to me. It is the freedom that draws people here. In Hogsback, it seems that no matter where you are, you are just a few steps away from a forest trail leading to a mesmerizing waterfall. The village exudes wanderlust, and tranquility is but a single footfall away. It was no wonder that when my friend Ticia saw me outside the information center, I appeared so at peace. Nature has an amazing effect on people.

How to Get There

So, I hopped on a plane and flew from Johannesburg to East London, thanks to my Discovery Vitality rewards. Can you believe it? I managed to snag a round trip for just R850! From East London, you’ll want to hop in your car and take the N2 to King William’s Town. It’s a bit of a drive, but trust me, it’s worth it. Just be prepared for a few stop-and-go areas due to some roadworks along the way.

Once you’re in King William’s Town, it’s time to head onto the R63 towards Alice. And don’t worry, I know it might take some patience, but trust me, it’s all part of the adventure. The scenery will make up for any delays, I promise.

Finally, you’ll make a left turn onto the R345, which will take you up the breathtaking Hogsback Pass. This road is absolutely beautiful, let me tell you. The views will leave you speechless. And once you make it to the top, you’ll arrive in the charming town of Hogsback.
