Imagine asking ten random people in Johannesburg what they love most about the city, and I bet you there’s one thing that will come up again and again – the breathtaking sunsets. There’s just something magical about the way the sun sets here on the Rand, and Johannesburg offers countless spots where you can witness this daily wonder.

Let me share with you a few of the best places to fully immerse yourself in this incredible experience.

Discover Munro Drive

Chasing the sunset across Joburg

If you want to see breathtaking views of Joburg, I recommend starting your adventure before the sun sets. Don’t miss out on the incredible viewpoint on Munro Drive in Upper Houghton, it’s the perfect spot.

From this viewpoint, you can see the whole CBD and northern Joburg. It’s a real hidden gem in the city.

The Munro Drive pass is a short 900 meters long and connects Upper Houghton to Houghton below. It’s one of the few mountain passes in South Africa that’s shorter than 1 kilometer. It’s pretty amazing that we have a mountain pass right here in Joburg, isn’t it?

Parktonian Hotel

Chasing the sunset across Joburg

Alright, now that you know what you can expect to see during your sunset viewing adventure, let’s move on to our next destination. Plug in the coordinates for the Parktonian Hotel in your GPS and get ready for an amazing experience. This hotel, which is managed by Anew Hotels, recently reopened amidst the COVID pandemic and it has something special to offer on its 25th floor – a fabulous rooftop bar.

As you enter the Parktonian Hotel, you’ll notice that it has a unique circular shape. This means that from the rooftop bar, you’ll get a full 360-degree view of Johannesburg. It’s a view that not many locals have had the chance to enjoy. From here, you can take in the sights of the bustling city, stretching out in all directions. It’s a sight that truly captures the essence of Johannesburg.

One standout feature of the Parktonian Hotel is the incredible view it offers of the Joburg Council Chambers. This stunning architectural marvel, worth a whopping R280 million, is located right next to the Metro Centre in Braamfontein. The building has a unique shape – a two-level circular design shaped like a calabash – and it is adorned with sleek, golden-colored glass. As the sun sets, these golden hues come alive, creating a breathtaking display of light and color.

I bet you’ll notice another circular icon in the Joburg skyline – it’s the Ponte City building towards the eastern edge of the city. But don’t get too caught up there; you want to be at the next stop before the sun says goodbye for the day.

Head over to the Parktonian Hotel on 120 De Korte Street in Braamfontein.

Now let me tell you about the Hallmark House Hotel.

Chasing the sunset across Joburg

Right in the heart of Maboneng, on the eastern edge of the city, there’s a modern building that used to be a diamond polishing business in Joburg. It’s 15 stories tall and has transformed into a hotel and entertainment space, with design by the famous Ghanian designer, David Ajaye.

Now, Hallmark House is home to a hotel, an old-fashioned barber shop, a coworking space, and the most amazing jazz bar in the city, The Marabi Club. But that’s not all – at the very top of the building, there’s an incredible spot called the Rooftop Bar.

Located in the vibrant Ponte City building, the Rooftop Bar provides an amazing view of the iconic Hillbrow Tower, especially when outlined against the sky. Constructed from 1968 to 1971, the tower stood as Africa’s tallest structure and tower for half a century. It also held the title of the tallest structure in the Southern Hemisphere until 1978, when the Mount Isa Chimney in Queensland, Australia, was erected and surpassed its height of 270 meters.

Once a popular tourist attraction in Joburg, the Hillbrow Tower boasted two restaurants, including the famous rotating Heinrich’s Restaurant. Unfortunately, it has been off-limits to the public since 1981.

Come and discover these fascinating landmarks, along with many others, by joining a tour. You can find Hallmark House at 54 Siemert Road, New Doornfontein.
